Following the impact of Radiance, Glasgow’s first Festival of Light in 2005, NVA were commissioned to produce and curate Glow, Newcastle Gateshead’s first International Festival of Light.
Glow brought a brilliant array of world-class lightworks, celebrated artists and emerging talent to the city, showcased over a 2 mile illuminated route through the back streets of the city centre.
An eclectic range of lighting interventions exposed the urban diversity of Newcastle Gateshead’s architecture, a striking mix of old, modern and contemporary. Glow explored and highlighted iconic landmarks, quirky buildings and unnoticed features, offering a fascinating glimpse of a hidden world set within familiar city streets.
‘The Shadow House’ at Saltwell Park and Benwell saw the great Victorian brick edifices transformed into a winter fairytale setting, with original animated films by puppeteer Alison McGowan, illustrator Lindsay John and film-maker Mark Huskisson, projected from the interiors of the buildings.
‘The Vampire Rabbit Trail’ used Newcastle’s legendary and mysterious rabbit, which is carved above a doorway by St Nicholas Cathedral, as a repeated motif around the main festival sites. The trail gave children an engaging challenge to mark down and collect all of the rabbit projections onto a map.
‘Mobile’ was a community collaboration between NVA and Newcastle event producers Name. A specially designed mobile disco set in a perspex cube travelled around temporary outdoor venues throughout the city for impromptu dance events and music workshops. Other highlights included work by Monica Bonvicini, Ugo Rondine, Smith/Stewart and Graham Gussin.
From engaging local projects to the chance to see contemporary work by renowned visual artists, Glow worked for a regional audience while bringing a national profile to the festival.

Healing Wall consists of a grid of pharmacy signs placed. Pinsky appropriates the neon crosses inspired by Minimalism and Optic Art and returns them into the sphere of art.The green cross bears a promise, the possibility of a 'betterbeing', but this promise of the product/service bears a stronger relationship with the aesthetic qualities of the object than its ability to perform. The green crosses are placed in the prolongation of their vertical and horizontal axes forming a Cartesian grid. He thus suggests a rational explanation of the recovery phenomenon, which is often due to our faith in medicine and its remedies, the placebo effect being the true cure to our ills. Affirming the principle that "too much of a good thing can be bad for you", Healing Wall’s disorientating array of animations casts a green glow across the faces of its uneasy pilgrims.
