"Art, which is masculine, nurtures science which is feminine. Sight is the sense of Glory, hearing is the sense of Faith. The ideal quality of a work of art is harmony, which in the visual arts comes from light that gives relief and decorates. Architecture is the ordering of light."

by Antoni Gaudí

Casa Batlló is a building designed by Antoni Gaudi and built in years 1905–1907; located Passeig de Gràcia, part of the Illa de la Discòrdia in the Eixample district of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.

Gaudi was a passionate observer, learning from what he saw in the sky and the clouds, in water, rocks, plants, animals, and mountains.

To understand Gaudí's achievement we must recognize that his work is not exclusively architectural. It is more than that, it is not architectural in the sense that historians understand architecture. Gaudí's work does not fit into traditional schemes of architecture.

Paeonia suffruticosa, the tree peony, is a species of peony native to China. Paeonia Suffruticosa is the plant’s botanical name. More commonly, the plant is referred as the tree peony. It is an important symbol in Chinese culture. It was first described and validly published by Henry Charles Andrews in 1804. The flower component is its most attracting feature of the plant. Paeonia Suffruticosa’s flower is very large in comparison with most other flower species. The size of the flower usually ranges from 6-12 inches cross. The name Paeonia Suffruticosa is derived from two different sources. The genus name Paeonia derives from the name Paeon. In Greek mythology, this name was a disciple of the god of medicine, Ascleplus. Suffruticosa has a more complex name origin as it is composed in two different parts. The first part suf- , which is only a prefix, and the second part fruticosa, meaning shrub-like. The epidermis of its roots is used in traditional Chinese medicine, called "mudanpi". Despite their classification as trees, it is the flowers that attract the public’s attention. Peonies are generally slow to grow and have flowers that only last briefly and are fragile to weather conditions such as wind, rain or hot temperatures.

In China, it is generally known as the “king of flowers”, symbolizing honor, rich, and aristocracy, as well as love affection, and feminine beauty. It has been frequently portrayed and appraised in various significant Chinese literatures and art.

Now in spring, the sun is still relatively low on the Italian Riviera, so it paints a glistening carpet of light on the Mediterranean.
