Dorothy Jean Dandridge (November 9, 1922 – September 8, 1965) was an American actress and singer. She was the first African-American to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for Carmen Jones (1954). Dandridge had also performed as a vocalist in venues such as the Cotton Club and the Apollo Theater. During her early career, she performed as a part of the Wonder Children, later the Dandridge Sisters, and appeared in a succession of films, usually in uncredited roles.

In 1959, Dandridge was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Porgy and Bess. She was the subject of the 1999 biographical film Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, with Halle Berry portraying her. She had been recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

August 21, 1950 issue.

Besides the ads, the issue also had photos from the ongoing war in Korea. (Note the M1 on the Jeep, and the en-bloc clips around the soldier's neck.)

Might as well send the books overseas. Our kids can't read em.

Almost sounds like a modern tabloid headline, doesn't it ? Ad ran 1/26/68 edition.

"Barek" is a Melbourne-based urban artist celebrated for his whimsical, "other-worldly" characters and extensive work with paste-ups, stickers, and murals.

Finally, "Barek's" work is easily identified by stylized, imaginative creatures often featuring characteristic eyes and "childish naivety".

Eugene McCarthy who gave LBJ problems in 1968 and John Lindsay, RINO supreme. Not the last so called Republican mayor of NYC to defect from the GOP. There are no real Republicans east of the Hudson. Why don't people realize that? All this is in the future however.

Salem Cigarette advertisement ~ June 14, 1968 Life Magazine.

That's what the editors of LIFE observed toward the end of February 1968. The list of body blows to the country was long, and getting longer. A restless American youth seemed "more deeply alienated from inherited values than any previous generation."

Another 50's life magazine scan...

I was in my art studio and I had moved things around and noticed I had inadvertantly placed paintbrush on the life magazine. This is the new confluence of my energies painting and photography.

I shot a fashion show at the NHL festival in downtown raleigh, this is one of my fav shots from the night. It looked like a LIFE magazine cover so i decided to make it one. Alternately you could believe that i went back in time and became a photographer for life magazine by using a shot i took at the show tonight. you choose which is true.
