Iconic, "Wait for me Daddy" is one of the most famous WW2 photographs in Canadian History. It was printed in Life Magazine and was hung on display in every classroom across BC during the war years.
A Province Newspaper photographer, Claude P. Dettloff captured the original image, October 1st 1940, of Warren ( Whitney) Bernard, 5 years old running from his mother to grab the hand of his father.
Whitney's father switched the hand that was holding his rifle to hold his son's little hand.
The long line of Canadian soldiers were marching off to war at 8th Street and Columbia Street, New Westminster to their awaiting ship.
This beautiful bronze sculpture was unveiled at the same location as where the image was captured. The lighting at night gives it the red hue.
(In this image I have carefully isolated the main part of the sculpture to show the beauty and detail without the background distractions)
