Week #11

Theme: Green

I've been feeling quite unwell all week, so I wasn't able to get out with my camera at all. While at work Friday night, I thought I probably wouldn't be able to get a photo for this week's theme...and as I pondered this, I gazed over at my green work bag on my desk...hmmm...it just might do, I thought. So last night before I left for work, I took this photo. It's certainly not the most fascinating subject, but it's a personal one for me. This bag carries everything I might need for my long shifts at the hospital...keys, calipers, stethoscope, clothes, food. And I love that every time I look at it, no matter how tired I am, or how crazy my shift is, it reminds me that life is good. And it is.

I got my baby back in the mail today! Thank god, my film camera was obviously crapping out on me, so my rebel got here just in time! Oh, and gigantic thanks to Canon for fixing her up for free. I don't know how that all works out, but I am so grateful because I didn't know how I was going to pay for the repairs. It's lovely how things work out sometimes.

Oh, the past 2 days have been great. Frank from Post Secret came yesterday to our school to talk with us and it was a really wonderful experience. I won't even begin to express how I feel about Post Secret and how grand it is, because that could go on forever.

And then today, I passed my exam!, got my camera back in the mail, and had an excellent time handing out flowers to random individuals. I wish I could have recorded the reactions I got when I offered them a flower... it was such a range in emotions. Some were confused, some were skeptical, and some looked deeply touched and genuinely thankful. It was a wonderful experience and I hope to do it again soon

I'm just very happy right now. I don't know how long this will all last and I honestly don't care. I'm going to soak it up for all it's worth and enjoy it in this beautiful moment I'm living in right now, and that's good enough for me.

Everyone have a lovely weekend!

I never figured that I'd be a single dad to three very amazing girls.

It's all God's fault I know it.

When I was in college... in one of the few times that I prayed without death or disaster being imminent I asked God to 'surround me with beautiful women.'

I figured what the heck... I got nothin' to lose.

Years later I came to understand God's sense of humor.

Prolly should get a lawyer before praying if you know what I mean.

Every single parent can tell you all about the trials and the challenges of raising kids by themselves.

You know what... you always worry that you're not doing good enough.

I walked into the kitchen the other day and my daughter had a deck of cards spread out on the table.

A friend of hers was going through some tough times.

My daughter took a Sharpie permanent marker and wrote something nice on each of the cards in the pack and gave them to her friend as a gift.

I was touched.

These are the moments you strive for as a parent.

The ones that tell you everything's gonna be alright.

That somehow you got the important stuff through.

I love those girls with all of my heart and my soul and my entire being.

Moments like this make me so proud.

Caffeine is the most important component of coffee, and the most consumed psychoactive in the world. Just take a coffee, caffeine acts on the brain, blocking a neurotransmitter, adenosine, which causes other substances such as dopamine or norepinephrine, which accelerate brain activity.

I love everything about this country. Our family. Our friends. The light. The smells. The overall vibe just fills me up. Thank you South Africa for being you (and for having great coffee).

Old journal scan. Mass. somewhere.

Unedited shot of a girl in Amsterdam. Taken with my Sony HX1.

It's almost Christmas, and it's getting warmer and sunnier every day, for the end of this week we're expecting temperatures around 20 C or more...normally I would find this somewhat disconcerting, as it is November now, but considering that this years Summer sucked so badly, I think we more than earned a warm Winter, hehe. I am still wearing T-shirts and shorts, it just feels right, and I don't easily get cold, but it seems that a lot of my fellow Amsterdammers take offense in me enjoying the breezy, fresh air to the max, I get lots of confused, amused and angry looks from those wearing their Winter-gear already, almost as if I was shooting them in a puddle, lol. So if you see me wearing the clothes that you wished you could have worn this Summer, don't be mad, you know how they say, don't hate the Player, hate the Game, hahaha :D

Indian Summer days demand to be spent raking leaves, tidying up the garden & basking in the autumn sun's glow. And that just what I intend to do today!
