Portland was something like 99.6% totality, and full totality was about an hour south. Everyone was talking about armageddon level traffic so I figured that almost would be good enough. Spoiler alert--It was not. The sky got dark while it was still bright; it was very surreal! It was kind of like how tv/movies put a filter on to make bright sunlight look like not sunlight. We saw the shadow bands running across the ground and the cool eclipse shadows. But we should have sucked it up and gone to see the real thing. It sounds like a lifechanging experience and we were too lazy to drive an hour. Sigh.
