Ever since the EOSM has disappeared into the SML Blackhole [1], 彩熊 Rainbow Teddy (RT) has been working hard to continue doing photography with the 7D. Most recently, he became interested in the 100-400 because with the super telephoto he deduced that he might be able to find some other teddies nearby.
But in reality, this photo was mainly to show what that US$4 umbrella looks like. It is not silky smooth—to be frank, it has all kinds of wrinkling on its surface, even the bokeh could not hide that fact. But as you can see, a reflector is a reflector is a reflector. It does its job, and for a starving artist like SML, any penny saved is another bread on the table…
RT needed a stool on the chair because alas the Manfrotto tripod could only go as low as that, apparently.
Pictured: RT with the 7D + battery grip + 100-400 unextended. Shot with the 6D + 24-70 f/2.8L with 90EX as remote strobe + 580EX with bargain umbrella on top left, and another 430EX bargain umbrella on top right. At this rate SML should be able to afford some lightbox + monolights soon. Stay tuned!

Rainbow Teddy (RT) went to Toysrus today to look for Bert + Ernie but he could not find them. Instead, he found Stitch, which SML originally discovered on @Ortelpa’s Instagram feed [1]. The weird thing is, it is in blue, and SML thought that Stitch is in pink.

The last I saw Bert + Ernie was when I was still living in New York. When I decided to part with them during my international move to Hong Kong, they have decided to go visit Los Angeles for a year. Thankfully, after a year of traveling arrangement logistics with my sister in LA, they have safely arrived in Hong Kong.
The year alone and away from SML has been well to B+E — as now even Bert is starting to have a smile. Here they were seen holding hands during sunset on some rocks at the beach of Wu Kai Sha, pondering on thoughts that they have shared for so many years.

I like color fields. They are also great for designs.
I believe that life celebrates diversity, and I think that photographs of the supposedly same multiples serve as evidence of the same philosophy.
彩熊 Rainbow Teddy (RT) is super psyched with the EOS M.
“Wow, this camera is the bomb!” RT said. “Finally there is a camera that I can control. I don’t even need a shutter release. I just point and it focuses. And the mirrorless body is light like me [1]. Best yet, I can even reach the lens for zooming.”
Pictured here with the Canon EF 17-40 f/4L USM lens [2], the Canon EOS M is the first mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera produced by Canon [3]. It is effectively a miniature version of the Canon EOS 650D with a simpler physical interface. Like the 7D, it contains a 18 megapixel APS-C crop frame CMOS chip. But unlike the 7D, it's focusing performance is rather poor.
However its saving grace is its ability to do full HD 1080p videography in AI servo mode—which is what SML now uses for lightweight travel use. Also now semi-permanently mounted on tripod to do videography for the Serenity series. Recommended.

I have a camera annex in my closet. You won’t see the Canon EOS 7D or the Canon EOS M here because those body is always with me in the camera bag. 7. Canon CP-E4 Compact Battery Pack. Improves flash recycle times by 3 times for the 580EX. Nothing special about it except that it houses 8 more AA batteries so I guess that it just cycles faster. 12. Canon PowerShot G12. My point+shoot camera. Highly recommended for photographers but not recommended for amateurs, this shoots JPEG and RAW on SD cards. 10MP CCD sensor with the usual Av / Tv / Manual functions. But for amateurs it can be somewhat daunting—my dad gave up on it and gave it back to me. But he is using the 10D and loving it. 14. Canon ST-E2 Speedlite Transmitter. Before Canon got into the radio transmitting game, this is the only wireless off-camera flash controller. (although the MT-24EX also can do that up to 3 groups). The ST-E2 controls up to 2 groups. Super useful is that it emits AF-assist beam in very low-light conditions so I sometimes mount it on the camera even when I don’t use flash. Balancing with the subwoofer [1] as well as the strap for the camera, 彩熊 Rainbow Teddy (RT) mounted the Canon EOS 7D [2] first on the Canon BG-E7 Battery Grip [3] onto the Manfrotto 3030 Pan/Tilt Head with Quick Release [4] on the Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod [5].
“Together with the Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM lens [6], this setup weighs more than 1000 times my total weight,” RT said. “My hands cannot really reach the shutter release on the camera, but thankfully the battery grip has another shutter release which allows me to do portrait photography easy. Perfect for me!”

In Hong Kong, homophobia is still a huge problem. For most of my adulthood I have lived in New York mostly as I wish to distance myself from my family in order to not negatively affect them because of who I am.

It was a quiet and sunny afternoon, and Rainbow Teddy (彩熊 RT @rainbowteddy8) wanted to play with the kids outside. In a kids playground nearby, RT found a metal jeep designed for his tiny figure. At first, there was another boy playing there also, but RT was quickly dismissed because of how he looks.
Boy: You are so weird. You have hair all over you.
SML: But he is a very good boy. He won’t hurt you.
Boy’s dad: Get away from my boy at once! Bears are dangerous. I saw it on TV. Why would you be such a careless parent to bring a bear to the playground?!
SML: He really doesn’t harm anyone…
(The dad and son team disappeared quicker than wind into thin air)
RT: It’s ok, SML, I am used to it. People always look at me and said that I am small, furry, ugly, weird, crazy, different, but I am perfectly happy playing by myself. Would it be nice to be loved by others? Sure, but learning to survive on my own makes me stronger.
SML: I am glad that you see the world that way. Now say cheese to the camera and let’s enjoy this wonderful day!

Oblivious to the chaos surrounding around him, Rainbow Teddy (RT) got into the “zone” trying to figure out the best move to counter SMLBioBot’s opening while the red blitz chess clock is ticking away.
“You know, I am a nice guy,” RT said. “SMLBioBot has agreed to play chess over Skype with his Mr G next weekend, so I figured that I would help him out a little bit. There aren’t many gay geeks out there who can play chess well and I am just doing my part to get him up to speed.”

Someone on Instagram commented that Rainbow Teddy (RT) needs a rainbow tshirt [1]. Until then, RT had no idea that he had been a nudist all his life. “Why wear anything if no one complains?” RT said. “I think that I will make myself a pair of rainbow shorts instead.”
Being a total hacker that he is, RT went to SML’s Swatch drawer and connected all of them together into a chain around his furry body. “Well SML can’t wear of them at any time anyway, so I might put them to use. Besides, I would never forget the time this way.”
“I can make sizes available for human also. I will need a lot of Swatch but if you are too lazy to do it yourself you can email me,” RT said.

JHS #57 8th Grade Class of 1982
Located at 125 Stuyvesant Avenue in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn.
This was probably taken early to mid April before our actual graduation at the end of June (I edited the "Taken on" date to reflect this fact). 57 had about four or five 8th grade classes, but we were the ones scheduled to graduate directly to high school and not spend a typically useless year in the 9th grade at the Jr. high level. About 1/3 of the people here were part of my 8th Grade SP class. Which is sad because I think most of us "special progress" students didn't make it to graduation. Part of it was class size: some were put in SP simply because the other 8th grade classes were full.
I remember years ago one of the TV newsmagazines (20/20?) did a story on finding a jr. high class photo and the results of tracking down most of the members. Almost all of the boys wound up dead or in prison. Many of the girls went on to lead productive lives.
I wonder what happened to most of the people that I knew here. The only one that I kinda kept in contact with, Denise, became a preacher's wife. She's also a former classmate from the nearby P.S. 26 (The Jesse Owens School).
One of the Little Green Men (LGM) from Toy Story was also at the photoshoot with Rainbow Teddy (RT) and Daddy Smurf that night [1] but he has a different opinion regarding how to use the strobe.
LGM: I think that a bare bulb is better than SML’s ceiling bounce.
SML: Why?
LGM: If I hold the flash this way, it highlights how private your date is.
RT: But we are just hanging out—SML was lying. We are definitely not on a date. My love is for Tigger.
SML: Really? So where is Tigger?
RT: Well you did say that he was too big to tag along…
LGM: I heard that also!
SML: …
So basically depending on your needs, different lighting setup gives you a different effect, and this capture illustrates a few things:
1. The stadium is very dark.
2. The flash by itself covers a very small area.
3. If you bounce from the ceiling it creates a much larger area.
4. Bounced flash is able to create a big soft light.
5. Unbounced bare bulb flash is able to create a small but harsh light.
So which do you use? It depends on the look you are going for.

Rainbow Teddy (RT) does his best to maintain balance between Moleskines and travel guides on the Sapien bookcases to help SML test out some newly purchased umbrellas on Taobao.
# Background story
SML used to be able to buy umbrellas from B&H fairly easy. Frankly, umbrellas are not that difficult to make. You can fetch a good brand like the Elinchrom 41" for US$43, or get the most economical (and poorly built) Impact 45" for as low as US$14.95. But when SML went to Tin Cheung in Hong Kong, the salesperson wanted HK$800 (~US$100) for the Elinchrom 41". Are you kidding me? No way.
So SML went to TMall and found an umbrella for 25 RMB (~US$4) and voila [1]. Sure the quality is not as silky smooth as the Elinchrom but to be frank it was actually better than the US$15 Impact from B&H. So all in all SML is very happy with this purchase, and will definitely go onto Taobao for more goodies in the future.

It never “gets better.” The campaign which tells you that it does has no idea wtf they are talking about.
People who are narrow minded will continue to hate and discriminate you for who you are. But when you grow older you will learn to understand that their hating you is not your fault. You can try to educate and help them understand you better. You can also try to understand why they think the way they do. Investigate. Research. Do not give up. Don't hate them for hating you. Invite a dialog with them.
When you understand where other people are coming from and why they form the opinion that they do, you can choose to agree or to disagree. Being able to agree to disagree is a sign of maturity. You have power when you recognize that your being you is your own business. Life is too short caring about what other people think. You are not responsible for their happiness. You are however responsible for your own happiness.
You are you. You have you. You will always have you. If you believe in yourself, you need not care what other people think. If they hate you for your being you, just tell them to fuck off. Be yourself. Never change for others.

Bert+Ernie are no longer with me. They stayed behind in New York along with 95% of my other friends. But I took rainbow bear with me. It was given to me by a dear friend. So toy stories from now on will be about mostly Rainbow Teddy.
I remembered what my mom says when she saw Rainbow Teddy. She says: “有冇搞錯呀?!” Which literally means “did you get it wrong?” Or rather most appropriately mean in modern language WTF?!
Well, evidently Teddy doesn't give a ___ about my mom’s comment either because he is working on a new single right now. But he won’t tell me what it is because when Teddy is busy he hates it when someone disturbs his “flow”—which SML totally “gets”. :)

Winter in Hong Kong is coming to and end, and the 農曆新年 Chinese New Year is quickly approaching (next week).
I can never really tell when the seasons begin using the Gregorian calendar (the de facto international standard) [1]. But as the name of the Chinese traditional calendar 農曆 (literally agricultural calendar) [2], it is very accurate in predicting when the seasons begin and end.
The flowers are starting to bloom. I am not very sure which one this is, but it looks like 桃花 [3] Peach flower [4] to me. I love peaches, but I love peach flowers even more.
