Early morning workout - Dawn at the Downs, Churchill Downs, prior to Saturday's 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby.
Louisville, Kentucky.
When I first moved here I asked someone what this sign meant - looked like "Don't Drag Dead People"

LOUISVILLE, Ky. —A truck driver was cited after his tractor-trailer was hit by a train in Crestwood.
It happened overnight at Highway 146 and Railroad Avenue.
There are signs at the crossing warning drivers that trucks with low clearance will get stuck.
That's what happened when the truck was hit.
A woman who works across the street said she has seen several trucks get stuck.
“If they look at the signs, I would think a lot of this would be eliminated. It's a big problem with traffic and police having to come and stop traffic and using the policeman’s time,” said Ann McAllister, who lives near the crossing.
The tractor-trailer was hauling canned soup.
No one was hurt.

Another auto accident behind our little subdivision yesterday evening. No one killed, A child was taken by ambulance from the minivan that the blue honda ran off the road. Many witnesses. The apparently alcohol impaired driver crossed the center line and ran the minivan off the road. This was a good opportunity to say hi, meet and greet new neighbors.
This tragic train vs. auto accident occurred a few weeks ago and a young life was taken - he was only 19 years old. He apparently attempted to make a right hand turn crossing the tracks. From looking at the scene it appears the train pushed the car with such a force it went airborne and landed over a hundred feet into a deep ditch. My sincerest condolences to all involved. But there are *no* gates. The following photos depict the scene and are quite disturbing considering this loss of a promising young life could have and should have been prevented and was not. Please review the following photos.
There have been similar accidents at this same crossing in the past.
This is what is confusing to me:
East Blue Lick Road Add gates to existing flashing lights and bell system at CSX Railroad Crossing on East Blue Lick Road. (343 526X) Add to TIP as part of KIPDA #174 Various general rail/highway protection improvement program projects. Add FY2014 Construction $240,000 federal; RHPD funding
So WHERE ARE THE GATES? Better yet where is our $240,000 and the BIDS for a $50,000 job.

UPDATE: I was informed today June 7, 2018, gates have been installed at this crossing now - unsure how long ago they were installed, but they're up and hopefully functioning correctly. Thank you.

This is the way of life here in Kentcuky. Every year.
This crow issued an intruder alert this morning. Apparently there was a sparrow across the street perching on a higher pole and the crow was not amused. The crow took flight shortly after this photograph was taken and proceeded across a 4 lane highway to intercept the sparrow removing the sparrow from the higher pole. There was a mid-air battle - crow and sparrow did fly together for a few seconds however sparrow was much too quick for the crow and disappeared among a group of starlings. Crow is still looking for violators of his space. That is all this crow does - every day.
**********
Update - Today this crow was nowhere to be found. There was, however, a flock of starlings not only on the pole but along the wires here as well. Crow should know not to harass sparrows with starling friends :-)
