Cheltenham Wetlands Park was once part of the U.S. Naval Radio Station, Cheltenham, Maryland. It was commissioned in 1939.
“The original antenna fields, comprising creosoted wood telephone poles and metal antenna towers, were located in the acreage surrounding the buildings. All metal antenna poles have been removed from the installation. Some abandoned creosoted wood poles remain in the wooded and swampy sections of the installation.
Established as a radio receiving station before World War II, the installation's mission evolved to administration during the Cold War era.”

Dinner with Mom (Irene Bartko Schultz) and Aunt Pauline (Bartko) at the Captain's Inn, Waretown, NJ to celebrate Aunt Pauline's birthday. Mom had found a small bump on her temple a year earlier - her MD, Dr. Montovani, determined it was temporal arteritis and gave her a continual course of prednisone which she took for over a year until she was riding her bike over 15 miles a day and at some point became dehydrated and became disoriented. It was then she was hospitalized for dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. It was then she requested a biopsy of the small bump on her temple. She was told it was squamous cell carcinoma and had numerous surgeries followed by radiation and chemo.
Aunt Pauline drove weekly over an hour away to visit us from Hamilton, New Jersey, and accompanied us to the hospital in Philadelphia many, many times. They were both in their 70's.
