I finally got to see the snow leopards at Twycross Zoo, an animal I've wanted to see my whole life, more than any other. A terrible shame about the wire I know but making eye contact with possibly the most awesome animal on earth was quite emotional, to say the least ! Actually I'm beggining to prefer zoo pictures that actually look like they were taken in a zoo. The same with ' my ' foxes and badgers, trying to show them in the urban environment they actually live in.
I'll never forget as long as I live seeing the footage of snow leopards on the BBC's Planet Earth series for the first time, especially the incredible chase sequence, here it is on youtube ( the music is so beautiful too )......

Makes me a bit watery eyed but then most wildlife documentaries do these days, just about every animal they film comes with horror stories of our persecution.
AND another thing....why do we see more of the presenters than the animals these days ?!?!? Less people, more animals PLEASE !!!

The World's Rarest Cat..Amur Leopard! Only 26 left in Wild, I had an out of this world experience with this beautiful female Leopard where she was kept in captivity, one of the most beautiful and most sad eyes I have ever seen. After many hours of walking back and fourth in her enclosure she produced a sound as if mourning, as if a lament to Mother Nature, it was neither roar nor grunt .. being tired she sat in front of my camera and made an eye contact..I cannot explain what I felt...there was so much helplessness in her eyes, as if she has given up and surrendered. I cannot imagine that people kill these extremely beautiful animals for their fur and let their bodies rot in the frozen forests of Russia. This drives me to do something for these animals, I can adopt her and give some funds for its conservation but the speed with which these cats are dying, I have a fear that this would be the first majestic cat to be extinct before Amur Tiger , Snow leopard and Iberian Lynx...

This is Xizi, female Amur Leopard having a good yawn. It looks scary but she wasn't in the slightest bit agitated.
In the wild it is estimated that there are 12 female Amur Leopards left alive.
I was lucky to secure an interview with Kiran Moktan, head keeper at the Darjeeling Snow Leopard Breeding Centre. He is an amazing man. And this is Karish, the snow leopard cub who was his pride and joy. Fortunately, I did get this interview published in one of the first issues of Asian Geographic. © Andy Withers
