I attended the photographic aesthetics workshop taught by my friend Mário Pires, and it was a wonderful experience. We spent Saturday getting all our preconceptions washed away by being asked the right questions (to which there are no wrong or right answers), and Sunday was spent doing three photo assignments in the morning, and analysing what we all did in the afternoon.
This assignment was: pick a single object, person, building, anything, and using a single focal length, create three different images of it.
I picked this mannequin featured on a store window, starting from the detail to the whole, zooming out using my legs to get farther away from it.
I shot all the workshop photos using my almost ten year old Leica Digilux Zoom, which only has 1.3 megapixels, but is still a wonderful camera.

Victoria Crowned Pigeon
(Goura victoria)
The victoria crowned pigeon is the largest living pigeon, reaching lengths of between 28 and 30 inches from head to tail and are said to live up to 25 years in captivity. It lives in the lowland and swamp forests of northern New Guinea and surrounding islands. Its diet consists mainly of fruits, figs, seeds and invertebrates. They are monogamous and mate for life, the female usually lays a single white egg 1-3 times each year.
These beautiful birds have suffered rapid population declines as a result of habitat destruction and hunting . Prized by poachers, Victoria crowned-pigeons are hunted for their meat, while nestlings are collected and reared for food. Their beautiful feathers and crest are also coveted, with the bird popular in the illegal pet trade and their feathers occasionally used by local people for head-dresses. Poaching of these birds continues despite the bird being protected in many areas. Victoria crowned-pigeons are easily shot or taken by hunters because of their large size, tame and gregarious nature, and the fact that they fly only to low perches when scared, making them easy targets. In addition, rainforest destruction continues at an alarming rate, with lowland forests threatened by logging and the associated logging roads facilitating greater access for hunters. Thus, these beautiful, large birds have become threatened in all areas populated and accessible to man, and are now absent from large tracts of forest.
My LE Wedding Cinderella Doll has been fully deboxed. She is posed standing, supported by the included display stand. With her floor length multi-layered skirt she should be able to free stand, but I didn't haven't tried to stand her that way. She is photographed from all angles.
On my second attempt to get the Limited Edition Wedding Cinderella 17'' Doll from eBay, I finally got her! I got her with the help of a fellow collector. She is #450 of 500, and was originally sold by the Japan Disney Store. There is a Japanese sticker on the bottom of the box. She was shipped double boxed, and very well packed. She arrived in perfect condition.
She is very beautiful, and has a serene expression, rather than the grumpy pout of the LE Ballgown Cinderella doll. Her lips have a slight smile, which is part of why she has a more pleasant expression than the other doll, who shares the same face mold. She is glancing in the opposite direction of the Ballgown Cinderella, and her skin has a matte surface, rather than the shiny pearly surface of the Ballgown doll. Her pale yellow wedding gown has many differently sized and colored rhinestones enhancing the printed floral pattern. There are also several small jeweled plastic butterflies in the skirt, hidden amongst the flowers. The decorations continue throughout the back of the dress. There are also faux pearl buttons on her sleeves and on the back of her bodice. Her skirt is very full with a long train, and is in three differently colored layers. Under her skirts is a 3/4 length single layer tulle petticoat. Attached to her hair is an oversized pale yellow sheer chiffon veil. She has golden earrings and a jeweled golden tiara. Her wedding ring is a floral design with five golden beads; it is pinned to her hand. She has the old style legs, with fixed ankles. She is wearing simple ivory heels, with no decorations.
I will be posting a full set of detailed photos of this doll. She will be shown boxed, during deboxing, and fully deboxed, both by herself and with other Disney Store dolls.

The pair find they have been picked for a new housing scheme by a mysterious government agency, facilitated by the strangely omniscient figure of Miss Dee, who offers them a new house completely free of charge. In this dark, surreal comedy by Philip Ridley, Jill and Ollie find they are willing to go to increasingly immoral lengths in order to build their dream home”. Synopsis © Philip Ridley

Baltic amber (50 MYO) - exstremely! rare iconic broad-shouldered water strider (Veliidae) leg - body length 3 mm. ID confirmed by Dávid Rédei (curator at the Natural History Museum in Hungary and specialist in Heteroptera)
See the entire Veliidae here www.flickr.com/photos/amber-inclusions/5448711487/in/phot...
Here is a quote from the book Life in amber by George O. Poinar, Jr. (ISBN 0-8047-2001-0) - It gives a feeling how rare they actually are:
"These small water striders occur on the surface of streams or ponds where they prey on other insects. A single report of a veliid in Baltic amber (Andersen, 1982) is the only record of this group in amber." (page 119, line 7-10)
Note that we have extracted Baltic amber and studied it scientifically since late 1700.

The Theodosian Walls were situated between the Sea of Marmara and the Golden Horn and have a length of 6.5 km.
The walls were completed in 413 during the reign of Theodosius II (408–50). The wall was given his name, but was actually built under the supervision of Anthemius of Byzantium, a praefectus praetorio of the Eastern Roman Empire.
From 439 onwards, the sea walls were built along the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara (Propontis), thus walling the entire peninsula on which the city was situated.
The Theodosian Walls consisted of:
- the main inner wall (5 meters thick and 12 meters high); this was separated by a terrace (peribolos) from
- the lower outer wall (2 meters thick and 8.5 meters high).
An outer terrace, the parateichion, extended between the outer wall and the moat. The moat was about 20 m (66 ft) from the outer wall. The moat itself was over 20 m (66 ft) wide and as much as 10 m (33 ft) deep, with a 1.5 m (5 ft) high crenellated wall on the inside, which served as a first line of defense.
Access to the outer wall from the city was provided through the main gates at the base of the towers of the inner wall. The outer wall also had towers, which were placed about halfway between the towers of the inner wall. They were spaced at a distance of 48–78 m (150–250 ft) from each other. Of the towers of the outer wall, 62 have survived.
The walls of Constantinople were notoriously impregnable throughout the Middle Ages. Greek engineers used a much more effective construction technique than others in the Middle Ages. The walls in the Byzantine Empire were usually not solid, but consisted of double walls filled with rubble, which allowed gaps to be quickly repaired. Numerous armies of Bulgarians, Avars, Kipchaks, Russians, Galatians and Arabs failed to penetrate the walls. The first breach of the walls came in 1204, when the Fourth Crusade laid the city to waste. Two centuries later, the city had not yet recovered from the damage of the Crusade, and in 1453, after a relatively short siege, it fell into the hands of the Turkish Ottomans.
RAF Seething airfield was built in 1942−43 by John Laing & Son Ltd, to the standard Class A requirement for heavy bombers, the airfield had a main runway 6,000 ft long aligned SW-NE and two secondary runways of 4,200 ft in length. The encircling perimeter track was three miles long. To meet United States Army Air Forces (U.S.A.A.F) requirements, there were fifty-one hardstands both of the loop and frying-pan type and two T-2 hangars, placed one on each side of the airfield, that on the south being adjacent to the technical site. The camp was of temporary buildings and the sites dispersed in farmlands to the south of the airfield.
U.S.A.A.F use –
The airfield was assigned U.S.A.A.F designation Station 146.
Its ID Code was ''SE''.
The airfield was opened on 1st December 1943 and was used by the United States Army Air Forces Eighth Air Force 448th Bombardment Group (Heavy). The 448th arrived from Sioux City AAF Iowa and was assigned to the 20th Combat Bombardment Wing. The group tail code was a ''Circle-I''.
Its operational squadrons were –
▪︎712th Bombardment Squadron (CT)
▪︎713th Bombardment Squadron (IG)
▪︎714th Bombardment Squadron (EI)
▪︎715th Bombardment Squadron (IO)
The 448th flew Consolidated B-24 Liberators as part of the Eighth Air Force's strategic bombing campaign. The group entered combat on 22nd December 1943, and until April 1945 served primarily as a strategic bombardment organization, hitting such targets as aircraft factories in Gotha, ball-bearing plants in Berlin, an airfield at Hanau, U-boat facilities at Kiel, a chemical plant at Ludwigshafen, synthetic oil refineries at Pölitz, aircraft engine plants at Rostock, marshalling yards at Cologne, and a Buzz-bomb assembly plant at Fallersleben. The group took part in the intensive campaign of heavy bombers against the German aircraft industry during Big Week, 20th – 25th February 1944.
On the evening of 22nd April 1944, Luftwaffe Me 410 night-fighters caused havoc at RAF Seething after following home a B-24 Liberator of the 714th Bomb Squadron, which was shot down along with two other B-24 Liberator's, while a fourth B-24 Liberator crashed upon landing into wreckage on the runway.
In addition to strategic operations, flew interdictory and support missions. Bombed V-weapon sites, airfields, and transportation facilities prior to the Normandy Invasion in June 1944, and on D-Day attacked coastal defenses and choke points. Struck enemy positions to assist the Allied offensive at Caen and the breakthrough at Saint-Lô in July. Dropped supplies to airborne troops near Nijmegen during the airborne attack on the Netherlands in September. Bombed transportation and communications centers in the combat zone during the Battle of the Bulge, December 1944 – January 1945. Dropped supplies to troops at Wesel during the airborne assault across the Rhine in March 1945.
The group flew its last combat mission on 25th April, attacking a marshalling yard at Salzburg. It returned to Sioux Falls AAF South Dakota the U.S in July 1945. After the war, the airfield was used by Royal Air Force units –
▪︎No. 53 Maintenance Unit RAF
▪︎No. 94 Maintenance Unit RAF
The airfield was closed in 1945. With the end of military control, most of the airfield was reverted to farming. The eastern section, including part of the main runway and a section of perimeter track, is now Seething Airfield operated by Wingtask 1995 Ltd, originally the Waveney Flying Group. They have built three hangars and a clubroom and the airfield is active most days of the week.
To the south of the airfield, on some of the former dispersed barrack and communal sites, several of the old living quarters and associated buildings are still in existence. Some of these buildings are in a reasonable condition, although they are derelict and overgrown.
The former control tower has been renovated and has become a memorial museum to the 448th B.G. It contains a Group Roll of Honor and various artifacts and memorabilia. It is open to the public on the first Sunday of the month May to October, but can be inspected at other times by special request.
In front of the control tower, dedicated during a veterans' reunion in 1990, stands a memorial to the men of the 448th B.G. who were missing or killed in action during service at Seething.
Two other memorials were dedicated during a veterans' reunion in 1984. One is on the airfield itself near the Waveney F.G. club-house and consists of an engraved stone plaque and rose garden; another similar plaque is in the churchyard of Seething Parish Church, which is a mile or so north of the airfield. The ''Stars and Stripes'' hang in the church itself while an oak sapling has been planted near the village hall to commemorate the Group's close association with the village.

Delicate Arch trail.
Length: 3 miles roundtrip
Difficulty: Moderate
Description: Delicate Arch is the most recognizable arch in Arches National Park, and perhaps anywhere in the world. It also happens to be located along one of the most dynamic hiking trails within Arches National Park. More than 480 feet above the parking lot and trailhead in the valley below, Delicate Arch is hidden in a bowl at the top of one of the park’s famous sandstone fins. Delicate Arch is freestanding, and magnificently alone in the natural sandstone bowl, standing out against the multitude of horizontal planes around it. The arch was once part of the upper section of the fin, until erosion took its toll upon the sandstone throughout the years, and now Delicate Arch is all that remains of that Entrada sandstone formation.
The Delicate Arch Trailhead is located on the Wolfe Ranch turnoff, which is 11.5 miles up the Arches Entrance Road. The right turn to Delicate Arch is advertised at the turnoff, and the trailhead is on the left side of the road, at the ranch. The trail is rugged and steep, especially near the end as it mounts the sloped side of the sandstone fin. Along the way, visitors will pass a pioneer homestead, Ute Indian petroglyphs, an overgrown streambed, throngs of juniper, a smaller arch, and the famous slickrock for which the Moab area is world-famous.
Delicate Arch Trailhead
The trail starts at a fairly large parking lot off the side of the road, passes the old Wolfe Homestead, and then crosses a bridge over Salt Wash.
Wolfe Ranch
This homestead was built by a disabled Civil War vet, John Wesley Wolfe, in 1888 and inhabited until 1910, when the aging owner moved back to Ohio.
Ute Petroglyphs
This panel of rock art is attributed to the Ute culture. In includes a number of bighorn sheep, horses and dogs.
Frame Arch
Frame Arch is next to invisible when compared with the splendor of Delicate Arch just around the corner; most hikers barely even recognize the arch on its own merits. However, Frame Arch is famous for being the perfect window through which to photograph Delicate Arch, and many people use it to frame their shots of its more photogenic sibling, as its name suggests.
Delicate Arch
Delicate Arch has graced many magazine covers, mantle pieces, coffee tables, stamps, license plates, and a variety of other media. It is an international attraction, and has drawn its fair share of abuse over the years, including (now illegal) climbing, and ignorant pyrotechnics.

Features and functions
As well as being the architect of the building, Neumann contributed his Rococo architectural flair to several internal elements, including the stucco work, ornate altars, and ciborium. The sculptor Ferdinand Tietz carried out several of Neumann's plans, carving elements such as the statuary and choir stalls.
The ceiling of the nave features a large fresco painted by Christoph Thomas Scheffler, portraying scenes from the life of St Paulinus and depictions of the martyrdom of the Theban Legion.
Organ-builder Romanus Benedict Nollet worked on the organ between 1753 and 1756. Klais Orgelbau, an organ building and restoration company, restored and electrified the pipe organ before 1934, and renewed it in 1991.
The church's four bells were cast by the brothers Charles and Joseph Perrin between 1821 and 1822. As few European bells from the 19th century survived two world wars, the bells are considered historically important.

Trip to Alaska. Icy Strait Point. Humpack Whales. Jul/2016
The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a species of baleen whale. One of the larger rorqual species, adults range in length from 12–16 m (39–52 ft) and weigh about 36,000 kg (79,000 lb). The humpback has a distinctive body shape, with long pectoral fins and a knobbly head. It is known for breaching and other distinctive surface behaviors, making it popular with whale watchers. Males produce a complex song lasting 10 to 20 minutes, which they repeat for hours at a time. Its purpose is not clear, though it may have a role in mating.
Found in oceans and seas around the world, humpback whales typically migrate up to 25,000 km (16,000 mi) each year. Humpbacks feed only in summer, in polar waters, and migrate to tropical or subtropical waters to breed and give birth in the winter when they fast and live off their fat reserves. Their diet consists mostly of krill and small fish. Humpbacks have a diverse repertoire of feeding methods, including the bubble net technique.
Like other large whales, the humpback was a target for the whaling industry. Once hunted to the brink of extinction, its population fell by an estimated 90% before a 1966 moratorium. While stocks have partially recovered, entanglement in fishing gear, collisions with ships and noise pollution continue to impact the population of 80,000.
