The coffee house with the rich tradition directly at St. Michael's square was not originally opened in the prestigious Palais Herberstein but long before in the former Palais Dietrichstein, the predecessor building, and namely in 1847 by the pharmacist Heinrich Griensteidl. Within a short time he was known as a coffee maker in Vienna and attracted all sorts of well-known personalities.
As early as 1848, the restaurant was renamed "Café National" and became a classic playground for artists from all disciplines, which soon earned it the epithet "Café Grössenwahn (Delusions of Grandeur)". Around 1897, the Palais Dietrichstein was demolished in the course of modernization and the architectural revolution. The regulars of the Griensteidl had to move to other places.
Café Griensteidl had disappeared and forgotten for nearly 100 years, until it was reopened in 1990 in the Palais Herberstein. Similar to the Café Central, the Griensteidl found its new quarters in the former ticket hall of a bank, but the old charm is hardly to be felt today, although it was gone to great lengths to establish the restaurant as authentic as possible with knobs on which form the characteristic Viennese coffee house.
Visually, this has certainly been achieved but apart from a few old Viennese ladies, who enjoy a champagne breakfast or simply a cup of coffee, the coffee house hardly lets the visitor feel any of the Viennese authenticity. Rather, the restaurant is flooded by foreign-language tourists, who are then in good, but wrong belief now to have met a piece of real Vienna.
A visit to Griensteidl is definitely worthwhile. Anyone who does not know that the coffee house is something new that tries to look old, here feels himself to be in a very Viennese place. If the café is not crowded with noisy tourists, you can enjoy a nice ambience here. The location at the square with the St. Michael's church and the monumental St. Michael's gate alone is unique. What you order is simply good, be it a pastry, coffee or whatever. If the weather is kind and warm, it is advisable to sit outside and watch the hustle and bustle. The staff is friendly and quick despite the constant influx.
At the end of June 2017, the operator Do & Co announced that it would finally close the Griensteidl. Once again, a coffee house with a rich history disappeared from the cityscape of Vienna.

Innert Kürze war er als Kaffeesieder in Wien bekannt und lockte allerlei namhafte Persönlichkeiten an.

Fast 100 Jahre war das Café Griensteidl verschwunden und vergessen, bis es 1990 im Palais Herberstein wiedereröffnet wurde. Ähnlich wie beim Café Central fand das Griensteidl in der ehemaligen Schalterhalle einer Bank sein neues Quartier, doch vom alten Charme dürfte heute kaum mehr etwas zu spüren sein, obschon man sehr darum bemüht war, das Lokal möglichst authentisch mit allen Schikanen einzurichten, welche ein typisches Wiener Kaffeehaus ausmachen.
Optisch hat man das sicherlich erreicht, doch bis auf einige alte Wiener Damen, die hier ein Champagnerfrühstück oder einfach einen Kaffee geniessen, lässt das Kaffeehaus den Besucher kaum etwas von der Wiener Urigkeit spüren. Vielmehr überschwemmen das Lokal fremdsprachige Touristen, welche dann in gutem, aber falschem Glauben sind, nun ein Stück echtes Wien kennen gelernt zu haben.
Ein Besuch im Griensteidl lohnt sich auf jeden Fall. Wer nicht weiss, dass das Kaffeehaus was Neues ist, das auf Alt macht, der wähnt sich hier an einem sehr wienerischen Ort. Wenn das Café mal gerade nicht mit lärmenden Touristen überfüllt ist, so kann man hier ein durchaus schönes Ambiente geniessen. Allein die Lage am Platz mit der Michaelerkirche und dem monumentalen Michaelertor ist einmalig. Was man bestellt, ist ganz einfach gut, sei es Mehlspeise, Kaffee oder was auch immer. Bei schönem und warmem Wetter empfiehlt es sich, draussen zu sitzen und dem regen Treiben zuzusehen. Das Personal ist trotz des stets starken Zustromes freundlich und flink.
Ende Juni 2017 gab die Betreiberin Do & Co bekannt, dass sie das Griensteidl endgültig schliesst. Damit verschwand einmal mehr ein Kaffeehaus mit reicher Geschichte aus dem Stadtbild Wiens.

中地鷸的兩翼長而尖，頭形大而方，嘴長。野外易與針尾沙錐混淆，但大沙錐尾較長，腿較粗而多黃色，飛行時腳伸出較少。與扇尾沙錐區別在尾端兩側白色較多，飛行時尾長於腳，翼下缺少白色寬橫紋，飛行時翼上無白色後緣。與澳南沙錐較難區別，但中地鷸初級飛羽長過三級飛羽。春季時胸及頸較暗淡。虹膜－褐色；嘴－褐色；腳－橄欖灰。

Swinhoe's Snipe, Gallinago megala, also known as Forest Snipe or Chinese Snipe, is a medium-sized (length 27–29 cm), long-billed, migratory wader. Identifiable as a Gallinago snipe by its cryptically-patterned black, brown, buff and white plumage, but not easily distinguished from Latham's and Pin-tailed Snipe in the field. Common referred to as cho suekyung in South Korea. Entire population migrates and spends non-breeding season principally in eastern and southern India, Sri Lanka, south-eastern China, South-East Asia and New Guinea. Recorded on migration in eastern China, and occasionally in Japan.

The Little Rock was the first ship to bear the name of Little Rock, Arkansas. The only guided missile cruiser on display in the U.S., USS Little Rock is the sole survivor of the Cleveland class, the most numerous of U.S. wartime cruisers (29 vessels total). The Little Rock made four cruises to the Mediterranean and two to the North Atlantic. She served with distinction as flagship for both the Second and Sixth fleets.
USS Little Rock is now on display at this park and plays active parts in educational and entertaining activities such as overnight encampment programs and other events.

The Theodosian Walls were situated between the Sea of Marmara and the Golden Horn and have a length of 6.5 km.
The walls were completed in 413 during the reign of Theodosius II (408–50). The wall was given his name, but was actually built under the supervision of Anthemius of Byzantium, a praefectus praetorio of the Eastern Roman Empire.
From 439 onwards, the sea walls were built along the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara (Propontis), thus walling the entire peninsula on which the city was situated.
The Theodosian Walls consisted of:
- the main inner wall (5 meters thick and 12 meters high); this was separated by a terrace (peribolos) from
- the lower outer wall (2 meters thick and 8.5 meters high).
An outer terrace, the parateichion, extended between the outer wall and the moat. The moat was about 20 m (66 ft) from the outer wall. The moat itself was over 20 m (66 ft) wide and as much as 10 m (33 ft) deep, with a 1.5 m (5 ft) high crenellated wall on the inside, which served as a first line of defense.
Access to the outer wall from the city was provided through the main gates at the base of the towers of the inner wall. The outer wall also had towers, which were placed about halfway between the towers of the inner wall. They were spaced at a distance of 48–78 m (150–250 ft) from each other. Of the towers of the outer wall, 62 have survived.
The walls of Constantinople were notoriously impregnable throughout the Middle Ages. Greek engineers used a much more effective construction technique than others in the Middle Ages. The walls in the Byzantine Empire were usually not solid, but consisted of double walls filled with rubble, which allowed gaps to be quickly repaired. Numerous armies of Bulgarians, Avars, Kipchaks, Russians, Galatians and Arabs failed to penetrate the walls. The first breach of the walls came in 1204, when the Fourth Crusade laid the city to waste. Two centuries later, the city had not yet recovered from the damage of the Crusade, and in 1453, after a relatively short siege, it fell into the hands of the Turkish Ottomans.

Formed only in 2007, Fleshgod Apocalypse are at the vanguard of Italy’s extreme metal movement. No other band in the country’s history has taken ownership of and innovated on death metal quite like the Italians. Inspired by greats Morbid Angel, Deicide, and Cannibal Corpse as well as renowned composers Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig Van Beethoven, Fleshgod Apocalypse have fused disparate genres and crafted a sound that’s powerful, impressive, and unique across three full-lengths, the latest of which was 2013’s critically-acclaimed Labyrinth effort. However, the group are only getting stronger. Add in film score composers such as John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Howard Shore and melodic death metal—Carcass and At the Gates—and there’s clearly no stopping Fleshgod Apocalypse’s creative ambitions.
“Fleshgod Apocalypse’s music is orchestral music,” says frontman/guitarist Tommaso Riccardi, blurring the lines between classical refinement and metallic bombast. “This means that drums, bass, guitars, and vocals are elements of the orchestra, together with all the other sections, [such as] strings, brass, etc. This means that in the process of composing new songs we always consider all these elements together. Of course, sometimes a guitar riff could be the starting point, while sometimes the song could come to life with the idea of a main orchestral theme or a drum rhythm, but it’s going to be a very organic process in which all these elements are written and arranged together during the evolution of the songwriting.”
What Riccardi is saying is that when it comes to writing music for Fleshgod Apocalypse, the spark of inspiration can come from anywhere on any instrument. For new album, King, a song like “Gravity” started with a riff, while a song like “In Aeternum” kicked off with an orchestral motif. Then again, “The Fool” was informed by both Classical and death metal. As with Labyrinth so too with King, the Italians focused first on melding their influences and second on writing songs that would be immediately recognizable yet have a wider and deeper cinematic scope.
“[The songwriting was] very stressful as usual,” the frontman laughs. “We are extremely meticulous about everything, especially the songwriting, and I think this is what made us grow up so fast and gave us the chance to play so many great stages over the years. We are hard workers and we never settle on anything. King’s songwriting and arrangements took almost nine full months—plus all the recordings—so it was actually very challenging. But we are so happy with the results.”
To date, every Fleshgod Apocalypse album is built on the album before it. They’re a synthesis of the music and mentality of what came before. Labyrinth took from and expanded upon 2011’s Agony. The Mafia EP was an extension of debut album, Oracles (2009). King is, therefore, cut from the same cloth as Labyrinth, but in the three years between albums, Fleshgod Apocalypse have matured greatly.
“[King] is much more than the sum of its parts,” says Riccardi. “I think we reached the perfect balance between all the aspects of our music. Besides that, I really believe that we simply wrote our best songs so far. Every riff is mind-blowing and the way we managed the arrangements and song structures is great; I really feel that everything is in the right place, when I listen to it.”
Fleshgod Apocalypse are no strangers to concept albums. Agony was about all the ways our painful feelings can lead us to be violent and hurt others; Mafia was about the way the Italian mafia uses fear to control the weak and perpetrate their dominion on the populace; while Labyrinth centered on the labyrinth of Knossos, the legendary maze made by Daedalus. King, however, moves the band forward lyrically. There’s real commentary behind the stories of a collapsing world.
“King is about an old world that is slowly coming to an end,” Riccardi informs. “The king himself is, in a way, the only positive character of the whole story. He represents justice, integrity, and wisdom that are slowly being corroded by ignorance and mediocrity spreading everywhere. We thought this could be a perfect way to describe our indignation about the unrestrainable downfall of our own society in an era that looks more like the Middle Ages rather than the 21st Century. Obviously, in this story there is a positive message: that the king could be inside every one of us. It’s up to us to recognize the King and find the courage to stand for what we believe in. We should all hail the king we have inside!”
Recorded across two studios—Kick Recording Studios and 16th Cellar Studios—King is easily Fleshgod Apocalypse’s most forceful yet. Pre-production was handled by Stefano Morabito at 16th Cellar Studios—a session Riccardi called “really comfortable”—whereas the full production was completed at Kick Recording Studios with Marco Mastrobuono (Hour of Penance). The sessions for King were, as the frontman tells it, an “amazing time.” The ultimate goal was to give Fleshgod Apocalypse a firm foundation from which to build their complex yet savage music.
“I think working with Marco has been the very first step towards the realization of a very high quality product,” says Riccardi. “We are extremely satisfied about the work we did on the album sound, both during the recordings with Marco Mastrobuono at Kick Recording Studio and of course during mixing and mastering with the almighty Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios.”
Speaking of Bogren, the Italians felt it was absolutely necessary to take King out of the norms of their homeland. They opted to hire Jens Bogren (Soilwork, Symphony X, Enslaved) for his sonic expertise. Their reasoning was this: if Fleshgod Apocalypse had a gem in King on their hands they weren’t going to tarnish it. The group’s hopes were answered when they heard the first Bogren mix, actually. Fleshgod Apocalypse had something massive on their hands.
“We were looking for people who could really interpret our music and put it in a way in, which with all the things going on, where it could be intelligible and still extremely heavy and powerful,” the frontman says. “And we definitely succeeded. We finally obtained what we had in mind since the beginning: a great sounding album.”
If Fleshgod Apocalypse are at the pinnacle of classically-inspired death metal—King is a pivotal album—then where will the Italians take the genre next. For certain, they own it. More orchestration. More death metal. Superlative bluster from all angles. Thankfully, they can first put their efforts into King before deciding where they’ll take the genre in the future.
“This is a very hard question to answer,” Riccardi admits. “It is never easy to predict something like that. What I can say is that on our side, we are trying to push ourselves more and more into something that is grandiose, but at the same time heavy and sharp; something violent, obscure and dramatic!”
We can certainly live with that. Hail to Fleshgod Apocalypse! Hail to the King!
