The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses) is located in Maranhão state, in northeastern Brazil, just east of the Baía de São José, between 02º19’—02º45’ S and 42º44’—43º29’ W. It is an area of low, flat, occasionally flooded land, overlaid with large, discrete sand dunes. It encompasses roughly 1000 square kilometers, and despite abundant rain, supports almost no vegetation. The park was created on June 2, 1981. It was featured in the Brazilian film The House of Sand. Most recently, it was featured in the song "Kadhal Anukkal" from the Indian film, Enthiran.

The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is located in Maranhão state, in northeastern Brazil. It is an area of low, flat, occasionally flooded land, overlaid with large, discrete sand dunes. It encompasses roughly 1000 square kilometers, and despite abundant rain, supports almost no vegetation.
The National Park is quite extensive and has no access roads. Because of the nature of the park's protected status, most vehicles are not permitted access. Entrance to the park is made exclusively by 4-wheel drive trucks.
Composed of large, white, sweeping dunes, at first glance Lençóis Maranhenses looks like an archetypal desert.
In fact it isn't actually a desert. Lying just outside the amazon basin, the region is subject to a regular rain season during the beginning of the year. The rains cause a peculiar phenomenon: freshwater collects in the valleys between sand dunes, spotting the desert with blue and green lagoons that reach their fullest between July and September.
The area is also surprisingly home to a variety of fish which, despite the almost complete disappearance of the lagoons during the dry season, have their eggs brought from the sea by birds.

A desert with lagoons? I'm tempted to say that to me, without a doubt, the Lençóis Maranhenses, in the north of Brazil, constitute the most fantastic landscape you will find in the entire country.

¿Un desierto con lagunas? Me atrevo a decir que me parece que, sin duda, los Lençóis Maranhenses, en el norte de Brasil, presentan el paisaje más fantástico que se puede encontrar en Brasil.
Parece uma paisagem lunar, mas não é. Apenas uma das paisagens mais visitadas do Brasil e do mundo. Nunca vi tanto gringo!! Mais uma vez acho que está na hora dos brasileiros descobrirem o Brasil, fica bem pertinho, lá no Maranhão.
O Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses é uma reserva ecológica brasileira criada em 2 de junho de 1981 numa área de 155 mil hectares nas margens do Rio Preguiças, no nordeste do estado do Maranhão e distante cerca de 260 km de São Luís, ocupando uma área total de 270 quilômetros quadrados, com dunas de até 40 metros e lagoas de água doce[1]. O filme Casa de Areia foi gravado dentro do parque.
The National Park of the Maranhenses Sheets is a Brazilian ecological reserve created in 2 of June of 1981 in an area of 155 a thousand hectares in the edges of Rio Preguiças, north-eastern of the state of 260 the distant Maranhão and about km of São Luís, occupying a total area of 270 kilometers squared, with dunes of up to 40 meters and water lagoons candy [1]. The film Sand House was recorded inside of the park.
