This shot, with a couple of areas of reflection, is VERY much a portrait of my neighborhood of Washington Heights in Northern Manhattan. The woman is probably a dominicana, with roots in the Caribbean nation of the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. (I will not discuss in detail here the recent law passed in the DR, removing Dominican nationality from any Dominican citizen of foreign--notably Haitian--descent. A mere mention of it speaks volumes!)

The store is located in what I call my "Nexus" of St. Nicholas Ave. I've been a customer here countless times, purchasing gifts for family members, as well as items for myself. They formerly had a two-storefront business, but had to reconfigure their business as a single-storefront, which they've done brilliantly. Just look at their use of space, even hanging items from the ceiling!

The woman’s doubtful expression may be due to the fact that, although she’s in the cashier’s line, she’s just spotted an item she prefers to the one she’d chosen. Then again, with phones getting smaller every day, her raised hand may indicate that she’s engaged in a conversation—one that may have provoked the emotion seen on her face…

In addition to the view inside the store, there are reflections on its windows of neighborhood signs, even nearby trees—a reminder that Nature is present, even in the biggest cities.

As I was writing the above text, I heard the sad news on the BBC that my lifelong hero, the US folksinger and composer Pete Seeger has died at age 94 (at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, right in my neighborhood!), six months after the death of his beloved wife, Toshi. I was literally raised on his music, as he and his friends who formed the group The Weavers had their one hit, “Goodnight Irene,” several years before I was born.

That song actually provided a cherished family anecdote: My younger sister Eileen heard people singing the song to a woman the group as we sat on the train in Chicago. Still new to language and mistaking the name Irene for her own, she said, “Her not Eileen, I Eileen.” How adorable!

I always considered Pete to be a member of my family. Everything he did and sang about were things important to me, too. I was too young to participate in the Freedom Rides in the early sixties, but Pete was there to ‘represent’ me. Many years later, when he’d founded the Clearwater Festival, an annual music and environmental celebration, I was able to see him and Toshi at work--singing, but also picking up the trash. No task was below them…

I took photos of Pete, among other people, in 1985 at the 25th anniversary of New York City's “leftie” radio station WBAI-FM, but donated the negatives. I saved a print of Pete, wearing a flowery shirt and a corduroy jacket, speaking to Julius Lester. I wish I could lay my hands on that print!

Long live Pete: the man, the musician, the husband and family man, the activist, the human being—and the force of Nature!

Also a leftie. I spot a trend

so, 16 facts about me, here we go:

1.my eye age is 38; brain age is 36, according to Nintendo; according to me, I’m not very happy about it.

2.my favourite quote: "Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college." Kurt Vonnegut (A Man Without A Country)

3.I’ve been to college.

4.left-handed, write from below, despise and discriminate lefties who write from the top (or have to turn the page sideways…)

5.my right hand gets nervous easily. I’m currently training it to brush teeth. My teeth.

6.I am a writer who can’t really write.

7.i like to do self-deprecating jokes as i thought they are easier, but i am not very good at them.

9.i sweat when i eat sour stuff. I also do when i feel warm.

10.i hated the fact that I ALWAYS get staff in shops physically attached to me, performing some Derren Brown stuff on me, when I'm just window shopping, but will get completely ignored like the ESC key on the keyboard when I really needed some assistance. So in a way, I hate to be misunderstood, just like Britney.

Had a flat out morning… two appts and tried to sneak a coffee with a friend in between. So my tea sketch was an example of 100% reflex. I don't remember really thinking about it much at all -was way too engaged in the conversation. But well, as you all know, I do sketch the odd cup of tea so I can rely on my reflex.

On the right side of the spread is a yellow background, lines and text done with my right hand (yes I am a leftie). I have decided to only do work with my right hand for the next week for a little bit of fun (and well, my left hand has been doing overtime lately and I think it would like a little break!)

And the yellow square is because I had my yellow fever shot today in preparation for The Urban Sketchers Symposium in Brazil in August. (picking up Visa tomorrow…so I am ready to go) I am hoping that it doesn't knock me about too much…though a forced rest wouldn't do me any harm! (The Tassie trip was a little crazy)

At the request of a customer the Workcycles workshop converted this fixed gear bike to left side drive. He had a practical reason to do so: the dog runs alongside on the right side of the bike and the leash would catch between the chainring and chain. The most straightforward solution was to just move the drivetrain away from the problem.

My leftie eating her lunch. :)

Yesterday the little man drew an angry face on his left hand, and a happy face on his right. Before you know it, those will be supplanted by LOVE and HATE tattoos. Sigh.

Glad to see one leftie amongst them (being one myself!).

The museum had a Jimi Hendrix exhibit. He's a fellow leftie. Of course, he played a right-handed guitar with his left-hand and was far more talented than I am.

woman a top of stairs- a leftie who was very angry we were there.

If I'm working, these are the things that are out. I'm a leftie, so everything I want immediate access to is directly to the left of my keyboard. This is my desk at home, but no matter where I am, I pretty much have the same things immediately to my left: moleskine, hipsterpda, hard landscape, current projects.

To the right of the frame and out of view are three things on my desk: 1) my inbox 2) coffee cup 3) trackball.

Thoughts? Questions? Suggestions?

This appears to show a leftie kicker... he's my grandson, Andrew, and mostly a rightie at this point in his development. That doesn't lessen the impact of this shot though.

" A typical strip begins with Jack visiting Aunt Meg in a new location and assisting her with her latest business or project, usually involving something illegal or immoral such as prostitutes or drug dealing. Someone causes trouble for them or annoys Jack in some way, leading him to investigate. The "villains" whom Jack investigates are occasionally genuine criminals, but more often well-meaning, inoffensive people who happen to have outraged his far right sense of propriety. Jack usually ends up finding out that what the suspect has done is technically not illegal, but still succeeds in getting the miscreants involved arrested on trivial charges and severely punished, often at the savage hands of the community - his exploits making a mockery of British Justice. For instance, when someone tried to sell a tactical nuclear missile to the IRA the village policeman pointed out that the man was a licensed arms dealer. Jack then had the arms dealer arrested for having an expired tax disc on the car he was carrying the missile in. In most cases the whole village is utterly corrupt and the 'villain' represents some form of rationality and normality to the reader. "

" Jack Black and his dog – parody of the boy’s own adventure story or Enid Blyton style Famous Five adventure, sending up the right wing attitudes and xenophobic conservative values espoused by such children’s literature of the day.

In the standard formulaic plots young Jack Black and his dog are perpetually on summer holiday at his Aunt Meg’s cottage in some idyllic rural village, the type of place where strangers, particularly foreign ones aren’t tolerated. Jack notices that one of the locals (or a recent incomer to the area) has been acting strangely of late and some unusual events are occurring in the village.

With the help of his faithful dog and the local friendly bobby Jack unravels the mystery, which is usually something ludicrous involving Nazi war criminals, Islamic fundamentalists or drug and prostitution rings.

The guilty party is generally brought to justice by meeting an unpleasant end at the hands of the enraged villagers. Cruel, but not that far removed from the stories it sends up. "

i am left handed so i flipped this photo around to look like it's a left handed guitar! if you want to clone yourself take several pics of yourself with your cam on a tripod totally still then put them into photoshoppe or gimp software and then use the lasso tool and copy and paste all of you into one shot and line them up and viola!

I ended up at the Golden Ponds Park and Recreation area where I shot the grasses and wondered what to shoot then found this sample of the persistence of nature. Not of memory; Dali was a genius on a level beyond most. I've looked that painting over and over that is incredible and less than the size of a letter. I've also seen the Art in Jewels collection. Fantastic if you ever have a chance.

This view is next to pond #1. It speaks to the persistence of nature not Monsanto. If only the Chinese elm could be eradicated here; that takes persistence of gardener.

In early May the recent snows have increased our snowpack and left us with a greater than !00% sequestered moisture. We have left enough moisture to wring out over the midwest tornado areas. I notice the rightie governor is now talking leftie to FEMA and the rest of the administration. Seems to be weak on stand alone state's rights today. I thought all of them had private insurance and elementary school shelters. Wrong again! Rick Perry still wants to walk with their own Texas money even though he is mute currently. I remember Texas is a net user of federal money that is well over 100% of what they contribute. Perhaps Texas will get theirs soon? Any particular reason to Unite the States in a union for shared protection and benefit? I don't suppose this storm has something to do with that 400 ppm CO2 in the world's atmosphere? That's been debunked by the paid fossil fuel scientists. grin. Back to the future? Hell no, back to the Jurassic! Triassic, anyone!

The Fishy Trail: Racist Ravings Of A Formerly Gentle Dude

Sunday, February 12, 2012, 16h56

Original Post

The first light of morning is coming through the curtains when the deafening noise of the amplified prayers finally stops. Last night, around sunset, the neighbors pushed big speakers into the street. Then they blared loud prayers all night long. The sound is bouncing of the walls of my room. Earplugs jammed in, my head under a pillow I feel like a tortured prisoner in Guantanamo Bay. This was my first night in Pushkar.

It's is supposed to be a quiet, mystic town at a lake. A 'hippie hang-out' as Lonely Planet describes it. No idea what kind of dope they got hold of but, please, get me some. All I see are touts, honking motorbikes, loud prayers and a filthy pool surrounded by cemented steps. Just another swarm, as far as I can see. Only in India they can fuck up a beautiful, natural surrounding this bad. This could be a tranquil oasis in the desert if no one had thought to put the adjective 'holy' in front of 'lake'.

This country takes religion way too serious. No room for humor whatsoever. Can't eat meat here, take of your shoes there, no smoking in this area, no alcohol in that town, etc. A million rules and regulations regarding religion but no respect for other people.

They take better care of their cows then of their personal hygiene. India's rude and unfriendly. Never a 'thank you' or 'please'. Always ready to push and invade my personal space.

But, hey, I'm just a shy, little man in a nation of over a billion; so what do I know?

One week in India has clearly turned me from an open-minded, peaceful, leftie kind of guy into an angry, raving racist. I'm no longer communicating, beyond the strict necessities, with anyone with a brown skin tone and/or facial hair. When they keep pushing I won't hesitate to deliver an F-bomb infused tirade.

They say India will change you in ways you never thought possible.

I have to agree.

This is my 6th Leftie! The pattern is designed by Martina Behm and I love it. It's so versatile and fun! I have even made a video and a painting inspired by this scarf, see: www.peonyandparakeet.com/studioday/

Pattern by Martina Behm. This one is knitted from various shades of Koigu yarn.

This is kinda 2 secrets wrapped up in one. First secret is that I have naturally curly hair. (If you look back in my stream, I cut 10 inches off of it not long ago.) Funny thing is, both my daughter and son have straight-as-a-board hair.

The other secret is, I am left-handed. My husband is also left-handed. Neither one of us can do anything with our right hands. We're pure-bread lefties :) Another crazy thing is, both our children are right-handed. Which to us, proved that being left-handed is not genetic in the simple way many people think, that left-handedness is a recessive trait. My scientist girlfriend told me it *is* genetic but in a much more complex way than just recessive and dominant. So many other factors are involved. So I told her, don't go any further because I know it will be way over my head. So, teaching our kiddos to write "right" is going to be pretty darn interesting....

Okay, I'm off! My girlfriend is having a lot of carved pumpkins sitting around at the reception. So I'm getting ready for pumpkin-carving duty :)

I liked this little vignette of the regrowth in springtime. The spring has been mercifully stretched by snows in the Rockies and sprinkles down here. On this particular day, I ended up at the Golden Ponds Park and Recreation Area where I shot vignettes and found this sample of nature resarting in the spring. I just thought it refreshing as the cottonwoods leaves reach their full extent. Well, except for the algae starting to fill the waters.

This view is next to pond #1. It also speaks to the persistence of nature not Monsanto. Apparently their pitch of increased production from them is just a lie. Two million people marched and the corporate media could barely cover any of it. I have had enough experience to learn that great soil can be created and that is the basis of all of it. If only the Chinese elm could be eradicated here; that takes persistence of gardener. Perhaps we can keep the poison away from this place.

In early May the recent snows increased our snow pack and left us with more than !00% sequestered moisture. We have left enough moisture to wring out over the midwest tornado areas. This is my Leftie shawl in progress. While I did buy two skeins of yarn to work the shawl in, I plan to follow the spirit of the pattern and use some of the leftovers from a shawl I knit last year as well.

Clearly, we have a leftie on our hands. She might be left-handed, but she's not sinister. :)

The butterfly up the sidewalk from Juli is Ellie's handiwork.

Everybody left the house for Juli's 2nd birthday last October and I took the opportunity to snap some photos of my cute little girl.

I was walking to the health food store in my east end Toronto neighborhood when I heard a voice cautioning me to “mind your step please.” The voice came from this man who was sitting in the open door of his truck at the curb and the warning was to make sure I wouldn’t trip on the hose running from a tank in the truck, across the sidewalk, and into a restaurant. Noting the splint and arm sling I was sporting from a bicycling accident he said “It doesn’t look like you can afford another injury. What happened to you?” I explained my fractured wrist and smashed up collarbone and last week’s surgery and told him I really appreciated the warning. I heard a genuine concern in his friendly voice and paused to ask what he was pumping. Punctuated by frequent cautions he issued to the flow of pedestrians, he explained he pumps used cooking oil from restaurants and ships it to the U.S. where it is processed into biofuel for a variety of vehicles. Meet Darren.

After chatting for a few minutes I thought to invite Darren to be my first project subject since the accident. He took my card and said he’d be glad to. Although less than ideal, my cell phone was my only option since I can’t hold a camera at present. I took the photos one-handed as a leftie and hoped for the best.

Darren is 49. I commented “You are now on the cusp of greatness” and we shared a laugh. Born and raised in Toronto, both of his parents are from Newfoundland on Canada’s Atlantic coast. When I asked if he had a message to share, he had a definite thought but had trouble finding words for it. “Growing up I was always a follower, not a leader. I always gave people a bit too much benefit of the doubt. I’d say it is important to have real people in your life, not fakes. I also believe in live and let live. Who are we to judge?”

I sensed a sincerity and warmth in Darren and I liked the messages he had to share but it was time for him and me to be on our way. We exchanged contact information and a left-handed handshake. He wished me success in my recovery.

I have greatly missed being on the streets, meeting and photographing strangers so this totally unexpected encounter with friendly Darren was just what the doctor ordered. A special thanks, Darren, for taking the time to meet and join my Human Family project.

This is my 284th submission to The Human Family Group on Flickr.

You can view more street portraits and stories by visiting The Human Family.

Note: Thank goodness the first photo was acceptable because the two subsequent ones were blurry. Either the autofocus had not found its target or my holding the phone and pressing the button with my no-so-stable left hand was the culprit.
