A quiet morning on the banks of the Potomac made finding this little gem of a spot totally worth it. A rising sun tucked itself behind some early morning clouds just long enough for me to snag this beauty.

Sitting on this small beach, it was easy to forget the hustle and bustle of the DC metro area; no sounds of traffic, no airplanes or helicopters skipping over head, just the sound of the river and the breeze - pure serenity.

Before sunrise, water was clam and dark sky color gradually got brighter with warm colors. Those warm colors were reflected onto calm water. The entire scene told me that it would be a beautiful and relaxing day. It did!

The bluff in Freestone Point overlooks the Potomac River in Leesylvania State Park. It was used by the Confederacy to blockade Washington D.C. during the Civil War. The top of the bluff is on Lee's Woods Trail. Freestone Point is named for the free limestone the colonist would get here. The trail is probably named after Judge Lee or Senator Harry (Light Horse) Lee who resided there. This shot was taken from the Freestone Point Pier. #LeesylvaniaStatePark #Virginia #PotomacRiver #FreestonePoint

When sun was rising, it seemed bringing breeze with it, making ripples on the water. The sunlight pierced through the cloud and lighted up the fishing pier and water.

This hiking trail is 1.96 miles long and is considered moderately difficult with small inclines and some stairs. It's well shaded and in good shape. It's probably easy if you're used to the mountains.

This train bridge crosses Powells Creeek. It was built around 1930 replacing the one built circa 1865. The earlier one was made of timber limiting train speeds to 20 MPH. The RF&P Railroad replaced it to allow faster train speeds. It's on Bushey Point Trail in Leesylvania State Park. It's a short hike. I think most of the hiking trails in this park are short. #TrainBridge #LeesylvainiaStatePark #bridge #Brücke #pont #ponte #PowellsCreek #creek #Bach

Another image from my recent trip to Leesylvania State Park in Woodbridge, Virginia. This was taken minutes after sunrise and the early morning light cast this mirror reflection on the water giving it an almost surreal quality.

It's better (MUCH) LARGE

This is another (the last actually) shot from a foggy morning at Leesylvania State Park just off the Potomac River in Virginia.

Last week I made my first visit of the season to Leesylvania State Park in northern Virginia. I saw a total of 20 bird species, including six I had never seen before.

Blue Jays are pretty common around DC but it's not so common to get clear shots of them (for me at least). It's usually a frustrating experience. I spotted this one in the Bushey Point section of the park.

After spending more than an hour with the Osprey family I walked a trail at the Bushey Point section of the park hoping to see some warblers. The birds must not have liked the weather that day, but I found some favorite subjects in abundance.

There were several Buttonbush blooming and they were the star attraction for the bees and butterflies that day. I love Buttonbush even without any supporting cast, but this beautiful swallowtail was icing on the cake.

I've added a number of photos from Leesylvania State Park that do not show in my Photostream. You are cordially invited to see them here: www.flickr.com/gp/gary_w_house/P6c2D2
