Patricia C. and Charles H. McGill III ’63 Annual Lecture in International Studies

On Sunday evening 18 January, Dr Anette Hagan gave a most interesting lecture on the German pastor and theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and his work with the German Resistance. Bonhoeffer was imprisoned and murdered by the Nazis. After the lecture the audience gathered for refreshments in the hall and continued to discuss Bonhoeffer's life.

Michael Murphy, metge de professió i president de l'Associació d'Universitats Europees (EUA, per la sigla en anglès) des del 2019, ha estat l'encarregat d'inaugurar el curs acadèmic 2022-2023 de la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), amb una lliçó inaugural anomenada Universitats sense murs. L'adaptació al canvi a Europa.

 

Michael Murphy, médico de profesión y presidente de la Asociación de Universidades Europeas (EUA, por sus siglas en inglés) desde 2019, ha sido el encargado de inaugurar el curso académico 2022-2023 de la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), con una lección inaugural titulada Universidades sin muros. La adaptación al cambio en Europa.

 

Michael Murphy, a qualified doctor and president of the European University Association (EUA) since 2019, opened the academic year 2022/2023 at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) with the inaugural lecture Universities Without Walls – Adapting to Change in Europe.

Well when Sophia found out about everything that Biff had eaten, she took him away from the kitchen and gave Biff a talk about what is good to eat and what is bad. Biff complained that "Sophia kept sticking a yucky apple in front of me and trying to tell me it was better to eat than cookies". He sold the apple on e-Bay for a cookie later that day

Organized by the department of art & design, the Young Alumni Lecture Series brought to campus two graphic design alumni to share personal career challenges and successes since graduation with current students.

 

This year Heather Ann Gaghan (left) and Toma Williams discussed what it was like to send resumés and cover letters to employers, to have a portfolio reviewed in hopes of getting a job, and a personal perspectives of the current job market. ONU students also engaged in an open dialogue with the speakers about the importance of specific classes and how students might best position themselves for employment or graduate school.

"Embarking on New Beginnings—The Responsibility of Classical Music Programming" was the topic of an October 30 President's Lecture by Timothy Weiss, Oberlin's professor of Conducting and Ensembles. "I fundamentally believe that art, and specifically music, is a reflection of our human experience," says Weiss. The President's Lecture was created to give the Oberlin community the opportunity to hear from the college’s outstanding faculty members and selected alumni as they share their expertise and insights.

Cultural studies scholar and writer Aljoša Pužar gave a lecture tackling the phenomenon of cuteness, winsomeness, or “honeyedness”, as the aesthetical but also political and ethical category.

 

"From the aestheticization of helplessness to the mimicry of the infantilized power there is just a step." The lecture offered a theoretical ground and will exemplify it with Korean, American, and Slovenian examples spanning from Donald Trump’s small hands to the lucrative chirping of K-pop idols.
