The celebrated Alox scales have reached a near cult status, thanks to their unique surface which is pleasing to both hand and eye. The appeal of Alox is in its merging of aesthetics with functionality – its attractive embossed surface make the knife both lightweight and easy to grip, and the hardened oxide layer helps to protect against damage and corrosion.
After being punched from aluminum and embossed, Alox scales go through a process called Eloxal which uses anodic oxidation to create a protective layer. It is this final layer which allows for the coloring of the scales.
Alox has a strong significance in the history of Victorinox. First introduced for the Pioneer knife in 1957, Alox was a key feature of the Soldier’s Knife which was redesigned in 1961 and used until 2008. Today, we issue a Classic pocketknife with Alox scales in a different color every year. These limited edition knives are highly sought-after by design aficionados and collectors, showing the true timeless appeal of this iconic material.

From Google Bard…
Victorinox makes Alox knives using a process called **deep drawing**. Deep drawing is a metal forming process that uses a punch and die to create a three-dimensional shape from a flat sheet of metal.
The first step in making an Alox knife is to cut a sheet of aluminum to the desired size. The sheet is then placed in a deep drawing die, which has the shape of the knife's handle. The punch is then pressed into the sheet, forcing it to conform to the shape of the die.
Once the handle is formed, the blade is inserted into the handle. The blade is held in place by a rivet, which is pressed into the handle. The rivet is then peened, which is a process of hammering it to expand it and lock it in place.
The final step is to anodize the knife. Anodizing is a process that creates a protective layer on the surface of the metal. This layer helps to protect the knife from corrosion and wear.
Here are the steps in more detail:
1. **Cutting the sheet metal:** The first step is to cut a sheet of aluminum to the desired size. The sheet is typically 0.8mm thick.
2. **Deep drawing the handle:** The next step is to deep draw the handle. This is done by placing the sheet metal in a deep drawing die and then pressing it into the shape of the die with a punch.
3. **Inserting the blade:** Once the handle is formed, the blade is inserted into the handle. The blade is held in place by a rivet, which is pressed into the handle.
4. **Peening the rivet:** The rivet is then peened, which is a process of hammering it to expand it and lock it in place.
5. **Anodizing the knife:** The final step is to anodize the knife. Anodizing is a process that creates a protective layer on the surface of the metal. This layer helps to protect the knife from corrosion and wear.
The Alox knife is a popular choice for EDC knives because it is durable, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant. The deep drawing process used to make Alox knives ensures that they are strong and reliable. The anodizing process also helps to protect the knives from the elements.

Serrated blades on Leatherman tools are designed for specific cutting tasks where a straight blade might struggle. Here's a breakdown of their uses:
Cutting through tough, fibrous materials: Serrations excel at slicing through materials like rope, webbing, fabric, and even some plastics. The teeth help grip and tear through these materials more effectively than a straight blade.
Sawing motion: The serrated edge provides a sawing action, making it useful for cutting through thicker or denser materials that might require more force with a straight blade.
Emergency situations: In situations where you need to quickly cut through something like a seatbelt or clothing, a serrated blade can be a lifesaver.
Here are some common uses for a serrated blade on a Leatherman:
Cutting rope: Whether it's for securing gear, rigging, or even in emergency situations, a serrated blade can quickly cut through various types of rope.

Rebar is a crucial material used in construction to reinforce concrete structures. It's made of steel and provides additional strength and stability to buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. The ribbed texture helps it bond tightly with concrete, preventing cracking and improving durability.
Are you looking for specific information on rebar, such as its types, applications, or installation techniques?

You're absolutely right! The Leatherman Rebar is a multi-tool designed for durability and versatility1
. It features 17 tools, including pliers, wire cutters, knives, saw, screwdrivers, and more2
. The Rebar is inspired by Tim Leatherman’s original Pocket Survival Tool (PST) design, making it a reliable choice for tough jobs2
.
Are you considering getting one, or do you already own one?
If you’re looking for a sturdy, no-nonsense multi-tool for DIY, camping, or everyday use, the Rebar is a solid choice. Do you have a specific use case in mind? 😃

What are the unique features of the Leatherman Rebar?
If you're looking for alternatives to the Leatherman Rebar, here are some solid options:
Leatherman Wave Plus – A more premium option with one-handed blade access and spring-action scissors.
Leatherman Skeletool CX – A lightweight multi-tool with essential tools and a sleek design.
Victorinox SwissTool Spirit X – A Swiss-made multi-tool with high-quality craftsmanship.
SOG PowerAccess Deluxe – Features compound leverage pliers for extra grip strength.
Gerber MP600 – A military-grade multi-tool with one-handed sliding pliers.
Roxon Phantom – A budget-friendly multi-tool with replaceable blades.
Each of these has its own strengths depending on what you need—whether it's portability, durability, or specialised tools. Do you have a particular feature you're looking for? 😃
How does the Leatherman Wave Plus compare to the Rebar?
How does the Leatherman Wave Plus compare to the Rebar? new chat....
The Leatherman Wave Plus and Leatherman Rebar are both excellent multi-tools, but they cater to different needs and preferences. Here’s how they compare:
Key Differences
Tool Accessibility: The Wave Plus allows one-handed access to several tools, including the knives, while the Rebar requires you to open the handles to access any tool.
Number of Tools: The Wave Plus has 18 tools, while the Rebar has 17. The Wave Plus includes spring-action scissors, which the Rebar lacks.
Weight & Size: The Wave Plus is heavier (8.5 oz) than the Rebar (6.7 oz), making the Rebar a more compact option.
Replaceable Wire Cutters: Both models feature replaceable wire cutters, but the Rebar’s pliers are optimized for strength.
Price: The Wave Plus is more expensive than the Rebar due to its premium features and outside-accessible tools.
Which One Should You Choose?
If you want quick access to tools and premium features, go for the Wave Plus.
If you prefer a rugged, classic design with strong pliers, the Rebar is a solid choice.
Would you like a recommendation based on your specific needs? 😃
How does the Rebar compare to other Leatherman models?
The Leatherman Rebar is a compact, full-size multi-tool designed for durability and practicality. Compared to other Leatherman models, here’s how it stacks up:
Size & Weight: The Rebar is lighter (6.7 oz) than heavy-duty models like the Surge (12.5 oz) but heavier than minimalist options like the Skeletool (5 oz).
Tool Count: It features 17 tools, including replaceable wire cutters, which is fewer than the Surge (21 tools) but more than the Skeletool (7 tools).
Design: The Rebar follows the classic boxy shape of Tim Leatherman’s original Pocket Survival Tool (PST), making it rugged and reliable.
Functionality: Unlike the Wave, which allows one-handed tool access, the Rebar requires manual unfolding
And you have to open the pliers to get a blade out! ed me..
Yep, that's one of the quirks of the Leatherman Rebar! Unlike models like the Wave, Surge or Charge, where you can access the blades externally, the Rebar requires you to open the handles to get to the knives and other tools. It sticks to that classic multi-tool design—rugged, reliable, and built for heavy-duty work.
Like the Bond, $126.00..you must open it to get a blade..
www.amazon.com.au/Leatherman-Multitool-Comfortable-Minima...
It may not be the fastest for blade deployment, but it makes up for it with all-locking tools and replaceable wire cutters. Are you thinking about getting one, or do you already have it in your collection? I have one, thanks!
