For Macro Mondays' "Book" theme. About 1" (25mm) of the book is shown on each side of the lower spine.
Fresh flowers, fresh coffee and some old leatherbound books to read — a perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon
Going for a gothic-magical look here, the moon effect is shot 'in-camera', not Photoshopped in later! Shot with a Canon 60D, Sigma 50mm F1.4 Lens, taken at 4/5 sec exposure, F6.3, ISO 320.
I love the look of old maps, charts and documents — they were produced with so much more artistry and love than their modern counterparts. Cartography has become a highly technical, standardised and accurate science but has lost the romance and mystery of the maps of old — here be dragons!
..into the shadows!
A bit of an experiment .... honeysuckle and hydrangeas resting on an old family bible. Shot in the dark with just a spotlight 😊
It was inspired by words from the group Syntax, and the track "Pride"

Give up on your pride"

Dark, warm tones this week — quite tricky when it's a bright sunny day! Not an easy composition to great right — the tall candelabra and low-down (but massive) bible didn't want to both fit in the frame.
Despite a favourable weather forecast, it bucketed it down this afternoon! Perfect excuse to indulge in some coffee and rich chocolate cake, curled up with a good book and watching the rain pouring down outside...

Slightly weathered, damaged top of the spine of an antiquarian book (one volume of six of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's oevre), printed and published in 1899 in Leipzig. The dainty art nouveau pattern on the book's spine is actually golden, but for better contrast against the brown leather bound back of the book I've applied an orange / brown tinting for which I started with ON1's LR presets, but still tweaked the settings in LR.
A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone!
"Under a lovers' sky
Gonna be with you
And no one's gonna be around
If you think that you won't fall
Well, just wait until
'Til the sun goes down
Underneath the starlight, starlight
There's a magical feeling, so right
It'll steal your heart tonight
You can try to resist
Try to hide from my kiss
But you know
But you know that you can't fight the moonlight
Deep in the dark
You'll surrender your heart
But you know
But you know that you can't fight the moonlight
No (no), you can't fight it
It's gonna get to your heart"

Warm, rich tones this week with a colour palette limited to reds and golds with a tiny bit of green from the rose leaves.
Antiques and the gentle warm light from an oil lamp create an atmosphere evocative of times long gone, where life was simpler (although often harder and shorter)! Nevertheless, it's the romance that so attracts our modern selves — the almost intangible and somewhat persistent idea that things were somehow *better* in the past despite the certain knowledge that they were not. Now we have the luxury of indulging in the dream and photography provides an excellent medium for capturing the essence of forgotten days…
Die Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek (ULB) ist die größte wissenschaftliche Allgemeinbibliothek im Land Sachsen-Anhalt
There's just something so warm and rich and inviting about stone walls, leatherbound books, pewter and honey-coloured wood. Last of my rather rustic mince pies - they taste better than they look!
Okay, so this is about as close as I can get to the fantasy of living in a medieval castle — it's an aesthetic I love but somewhat tricky to pull off with a small space and limited budget! Are the props anachronistic? Well, yes — yes they are. We're going for evoking a feeling — a mood — an ambience. Working in a very limited space (all my photos are taken on the kitchen table) — whilst the imposed limit can be frustrating, having to problem solve also, in many ways, helps to kindle creativity.
The Japanese Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles japonica) has been flowering its little head off since December now, and is showing no sign of stopping. I love its elegant form and the colour tones beautifully with the turquoise glass and deep brown leather.
The all-too-short Summer cherry season is almost over — only another 11 months to go before they're back! I love using cherries in still life photos — particularly with antique blue and white china — the complement one another perfectly.
Antique leatherbound books, an 18th century pear-case pocket watch and a Victorian chamber-candlestick complete with homemade beeswax candle — all period items to recreate the feel of sitting and working at a desk in an old library redolent with the smells of leather, ancient paper and beeswax.
Replacing the modern era's lattes, espresso machines and high tech laptops, with one's butler serving tea, from a silver tea set, whilst you're working on paper documents with pen and ink.
Back to a more traditional still life today — lots of rich tones with hints of the spice trade of old.
These beautiful camellia flowers are now in full bloom and I simply had to use them in a still life — the blues of the vase and background are a perfect complement to the rich pink of the flowers. I particularly like the way the flowers are reflecting in the chimney of the oil lamp making pink vertical highlights
"the well of lost plots. to understand the well you have to have an idea of the layout of the great library. the library is where all published fiction is stored so it can be read by the readers in the outland; there are twenty-six floors, one for each letter of the alphabet. the library is constructed in the layout of a cross with the four corridors radiating from the central point. on all the walls, end after end, shelf after shelf, are books. hundreds, thousands, millions of books. hardbacks, paperbacks, leatherbound, everything. but the similarity of these books to the copies we read back home is no more than the similarity a photograph has to its subject; these books are alive.
"beneath the great libary are twenty-six floors of dingy yet industrious subbasements known as the well of lost plots. this is where books are constructed, honed and polished in readiness for a place in the library above - if they make it that far. the failure rate is high. unpublished books outnumber published by an estimated eight to one."

(a digital photo taken outside the library where the well of lost plots was waiting for me today... and a golden tray for serving tea)
More traditional still life and surprisingly difficult to construct — too much light, from the candles, was causing exposure issues. Shot 2 exposures, 1 for the flames and 1 for the ambient & combined in Pixelmator.
I love mixing the new life of fresh flowers with antique and vintage items, the two seem to complement one another perfectly. Technical: 2 exposures were taken, most of the shot is the main exposure, with highlights from a brighter exposure added to parts of the gladioli flowers. The background was originally a grey piece of card, with the wall texture composited in (nearly 2 hours to mask round those flowers!) all processed and composited in Lightroom and Affinity Photo on an iPad Pro.

It was rainging again today, so I couldn't do the outdoor shoot I had planned, but i think this turned out nice, even though it's books again... I like books.

Okay, well, this one was strangely difficult... Sometimes things just don't want to mesh into the composition properly! Needed a double exposure - one for the candlelight and one for everything else - it's the only way to balance the light levels when daylight starts to fade, without using any lighting equipment.
A small selection of my collection of vintage and antique glass bottles — I love the way old glass catches the light as the tiny imperfections from both manufacturing and age cause a myriad of tiny scintillating reflections.
