A Utah Railway coal train marches down the Thistle Line Change, approaching Diamond Fork on a toasty July 3, 1991 afternoon in the Wasatch. Gold and blue SD40Ms No. 9011, 9003, 9007, and 9015 are from of a fleet of 13 units, on short-term lease from MotivePower, Inc. of Boise, Idaho.

de Kerchove d'Exaerde Castle
De Kerchove d’Exaerde castle was built around 1870 by order of J. de Kerchove d'Exaerde. He became mayor of Steenokkerzeel in 1882 and died in 1901.
After the death of mayor de Kerchove, the castle grounds were sold to Marquis Charles de Croix, owner of the castle of Ham. He put it at the disposal of French nuns who had left France because of the anticlerical policy of the then government.
During the First World War, the castle was inhabited by the composer Alfons Moortgat.
During the interwar period the castle was used as a restaurant and family guesthouse.
After the Second World War, the castle was leased to the Sint-Maria Institute in Schaerbeek, which used it as a 'school colony'.
In 1954, the castle was purchased by the municipal council and was used as a youth centre.
In 2004, it was decided that the castle, which had fallen into disrepair, would be renovated into ten

Colourful and completely loaded was the container train DGS 43952 from Enns in Upper Austria to Dradenau near Hamburg on the 12th of September 2020. The train locomotive was the ELL-Vectron 193 223, which was already a little bit worn out, and the picture was taken near Laaber in the Upper Palatinate.
In mid-1977, due to a shortage of power, the Santa Fe went on a leasing spree which resulted in some colorful consists. On July 3, 1977, C&NW SD45 937, CN GP40 4007 and Santa Fe GP7/slug set 1310-121, wind around Houlihan's Curve at the foot of Edelstein Hill just west of Chillicothe, Illinois, with train 113. The GP7/slug set is en route to Argentine, Kansas, for maintenance. Photo by Joe McMillan.
Happy New Year to all my Flickr friends! Closing out the Allegheny theme we see what was probably the craziest lashup I ever found on this operation. Among the variety of power leased by the ALY were two Shawmut line Geeps, and one B&LE SD-9. On this day I found them being used together on the eastbound #WAJO train, providing for an interesting but difficult chase that started under clouds and snow. Further east though towards Johnsonburg, there was clearing sky making for this sunny shot. Looking at the branches on the front of the P&S 11, looks like the trip was also "interesting" for the crew.
After uploading my shot the other day of the Detour Qualifying Train at South Royalton, I figured I should take some time to shoot the real moves. The sole purpose of going all the way up there is not for the mediocre leased power, but to document some daylight freight trains in places on the former CV mainline that I have scoped out from onboard for quite some time. Here we see yesterday's BDRD detour crossing the Winooski River into Williston, VT on the NECR Roxbury Subdivision.
A pair of leased six axles pull Providence & Worcester train CT-1 up the grade at Williams Road in Wallingford, CT with a loaded stone train for Cedar Hill. GMTX 9000, a former EMD SD60 demonstrator and CEFX 3173, a former BN SD40-2 disturb the evening quiet as they bring the stone south on the Middletown Branch from the Tilcon Quarry at Reeds Gap. The 9000 featured neat graphics on the long hood which made it somewhat interesting to photograph. Since this photo was taken in 2015 GATX lease power has made an unfortunate takeover on many New England short lines and the GATX blue paint has gotten old for many local photographers.
Westbound Susquehanna Sea-Land stack train NTV-9 gets a new crew at Binghamton, New York. Conrail rules prohibited crew changes on the main line, so MTV-9 would have to back onto the D&H/NYS&W Northern Division connector. Today’s power is a Susquehanna B40-8, a Motive Power Leasing F45, and an NYS&W SD45.
After overextending themselves acquiring Milwaukee Road, Soo Line established a wholly-owned division called Lake States Transportation Division on February 10, 1986, to operate its mostly former Soo Line trackage in Wisconsin and prepare it for sale. With this move, older locomotives and some leased power began to be much more common on these lines. On March 22, 1987, a southbound Soo Line (Lake States) freight climbs to the top of Byron Hill at Byron, Wisconsin, powered by two Soo EMD GP9s and a leased Conrail EMD GP38.

I was at the riparian preserve yesterday and there were a few photographers standing around (all socially distanced, of course) and one guy points to theses little shore birds and asks what they are. I said, "those are least sandpipers". There was a long pause and then the guy asks, "So what's the advantage of leasing a sandpiper vs. buying one? 😂" Funny guy

The early 2010's were a fantastic time to be shooting along the CP lines, and this day was no exception despite the rainy weather. CP 277 heads north along York Road in Bensenville Illinois with a trio of leased SD40-2's from citi group under CEFX and CITX reporting marks.
Burlington Northern train 153 was rolling west on BN's East End in Berwyn in the winter of 1995.
Powered by 2 of the 100 LMX B39-8Es leased by BN, the LMX power was synonymous with Burlington Northern's roster in the late 1980s through the early 2000s.
The LMX motors have since been scattered across the country after coming off lease.
ILSX 1339 and 1303 sit outside of the Independent Locomotive Service shop south of Holt along the Minnesota Northern. ILSX 1339 usually works the trackage rights duties from Thief River Falls to Crookston for the Minnesota Northern, and ILSX 1303 is a former Alstom leaser, now ILS leaser. There is always something interesting at the shop here.

Another from this chase late last fall.
Housatonic Railroad train NX-12 is making their Sunday turn from Canaan to New Milford and back. They have six cars behind them as they curl through the woods approaching the New Milford River Trail crossing at about MP 13.7 on the old New Haven Berkshire Line main in this long telephoto view from the Boardman Road crossing.
The historic route following its namesake river (which is visible through the trees across River Road) the whole way is exceptionally scenic, but sadly none of the road's own sharply painted green and yellow HRRC units are presently in service and they rely almost entirely on leased GATX locomotives. In charge this day were GP38-2 GMTX 2328 (blt. Feb 1966 as Illinois Central GP40 number 3011) and MP15DC GMTX 229 (blt. Apr. 1982 as SOU 2408).

The early days of Conrail were colorful, if nothing else. On top of all of the predecessor paint schemes that could find their way to any location on the system, lease units from Chicago & North Western, Bangor & Aroostook, Canadian National, and others were brought in to help with the aged, under-maintained and unreliable units that made of the majority of Conrail’s roster. Here a leased C&NW GP9 visits the engine terminal at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Also on the service track are an Erie Lackawanna GP35, a Penn Central GP40, and a former Lehigh Valley RS11. Although it hasn’t been renumbered/rebranded, the EL GP35 has been in the shops since the merger, as is indicated by presence of a silver box next to the short hood in the engineer’s side. This box housed equipment for PRR-style cab signals, which were required for a locomotive to lead a train on the former PRR lines.
From Above, CREX 1505 leads train 406, as they are about to crest the uphill climb and start their descent down into Rothesay, New Brunswick. Another leaser, a CEFX is trailing.

On this early spring day in March, I happened to hear the IR heading west through Yorkville, IL while I was out searching for owls and other migratory birds at Silver Springs State Park. I packed up my stuff and made for an intercept at the N. 4201st crossing east of Sheridan, where the tracks cross over Roods Creek on a small trestle. Since I had two cameras with me, one with the Sigma 150-600 and the other with the Canon 18-135 STM, I was able to go for the long shots and the wide shots.
Here are 3 shots of the IR approaching Roods Creek, crossing the creek, and then going away from me, with two BNSF units sandwiching two of IR's 4 blue SD40-2 lease units. And since nothing was growing yet, the race was now on to the two other bridges.
