The global environmental charity LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) manages nationally Open Farm Sunday. By welcoming people onto farms for Open Farm Sunday it drives awareness and appreciation of farming’s vital role in producing food, nurturing nature, and protecting the environment for future generations. (paraphrased from the LEAF website)
This year it fell on the Sunday the 8th of June. The family and I have been to two or three of Open Farms over the years and they are very engaging. It was my first visit to the Lillingstone Pick your own farm situated in Lillingstone Dayrell, just North of Buckingham. I was intrigued by their nature-based farming approach and the machinery displays. I made a lot of use of my wide-angle lens but shifted to the 100mm macro to get in close with the produce and Sweet William displays. Lovely with drama going on with the clouds and sun coming through. It was good to meet Mike the wheelchair farmer with his lambs for a guest display. I made a schoolboy error photographing the animals and forgot to “protect the whites” which overexposed in the direct sun. Next time!

A catch-up postcard from my camera. There is a lot of history behind aThere is real history behind annual Christmas poultry sales and their place within the massive uplift of food supply for the festive season. Many of the producers are small-scale local farmers. This was the first ever such sale I had been to. To my delight I ran into Stephen Leedham, the son of my primary school best friend David Leedham from Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire. This photography trip to the sale was also the first out for a new lens that I had sent over from Japan. The lens is a Pentax SMC D FA 1:2.8 100mm Macro lens. That means I can get in close and take photos that are life sized. I loved the results I could now get. Overall, a very enjoyable and informative morning out. Next year I want to take my son Samuel to bid for our Christmas dinner.
I was delighted to attend this farm visit to Robin Kingham and family’s farm in Moulsoe, Bucks. Their farm and the whole area for as far as the eye can see is already earmarked or owned for Milton Keynes East expansion and beyond. This is particularly poignant as I’ve walked through this glorious countryside to and from work for years.
We were accompanied by Robin’s agronomist who gave valuable insights into the challenges faced. I was particularly surprised that Oilseed rape was replaced as the break crop by various supported ecological options, such as winter bird feed mixtures. This was due to difficulties growing oilseed rape following the withdrawal of nicotinoid pesticides.
Photographically, Sandi Stockham and I set up on each of the trailers and between us captured a strong set of images. The sun was strong, the sky was cloudless, the temperatures in the high 20C, and the longest day only three days away. I underexposed everything by 0.7 stops to protect the whites and fitted a polariser to cut glare and reflection to the zoom lens which also intensified the colours and gave a rich sunset vibe. On another camera I fitted the 100mm macro to help get portrait and other detail shots. I still managed to need the smartphone for the panorama shot!
The visit was organised by the North Bucks Vintage Tractor Club (NBVTC) as part of their summer program. I really enjoyed chatting to fellow members and getting to know more people. The visit wrapped up with a buffet and beer with great thanks to the Kingham family.
