Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga (1533 – 1594) was a Basque nobleman, soldier and epic poet. He fought against the Araucanians in Chile, and there he began the epic poem La Araucana, considered the greatest Spanish historical poem of all time. It tells of the courageous insurrection of the Araucanians and also relates the history of Chile and of contemporary Spain.
Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga (1533 – 1594) era un hidalgo, soldado y poeta vasco. Luchó en Chile contra los araucanos, y sus experiencias le movieron a escribir el poema épico La Araucana, obra que se considera el mejor poema histórico en español de todos los tiempos. Trata de la insurrección valiente de los araucanos, y también cuenta la historia de Chile y de España.
