In the Exercise physiology lab students have the opportunity to measure blood lactate production during various stages of exertion during exercise. The main purpose of the lab is to examine the changes in the byproducts produced during exercise. The students are specifically comparing the variations between these byproducts in hot and cold environments. At Cal Poly College of Science & Mathematics, students apply skills they’ve learned in class and experience theories proven first hand.

One of our goals is to put the responsibility of learning back into the hands of the students.

When teachers lecture, the students are passive. They sit and listen. The learning has already been done by the teacher who then regurgitates it to the students. When the teacher tells the students how to demonstrate they understand [today we have a test], then there is no real investment by the students. There certainly no deep learning - the students learn it for the test, but ask them six months later what they learned and they don't remember.

In our work we are promoting learn by doing instruction - project based, inquiry based, or problem based because being critical thinkers, being creative, being evaluative, and being in charge causes the learning to be meaningful and relevant and deep.

The feedback in June was that the students found this hard work because now they couldn't sit back and zone in and out of a lecture. They had to be engaged and they had to produce.

Where we want to grow next year is in our work around finding balance. How do you support the students to the point where they are doing the learning without burdening them so much that they give up.

One of recipes that ties into the Five in a Row (FIAR) book "Another Celebrated Dancing Bear." It turned out very well.
