Last Friday, Ambassador Bitter joined the Minister of Education and Sports Madame Sengdeuane Lachanthaboune to officially launch a new 5-year basic education program funded by the United States through USAID.
Implemented by Save the Children, Room to Read and Humanity and Inclusion, the Learn to Read project will complement the Government of Laos' efforts to improve reading skills for children from the pre-primary level through second grade. It focuses on improving classroom instruction by providing teaching and learning materials, enhancing teacher competencies through training and classroom support, and strengthening community engagement in helping children learn to read. Plan organised a forum on positive discipline in Ban Dat commune, Thai Nguyen programme unit, Vietnam. The event involved parents, teachers, children and local authorities and promoted Plan's positive discipline approach, which works on the basis of positive reinforcement, enabling children to share in the responsibility of good behavior and to be respectful of decisions made by adults. Positive discipline encourages parents to treat children as equals and with respect, and allows children to take more responsibility for their own behavior.
