My daughter used to live in the backyard cottage of people who own this gorgeous German Shepherd, Luca. She is now living somewhere else, but we both still miss dear Luca. Such a magnificent and very sweet dog.

Remarks: Tuesday morning December 29th, 2020 Amtrak P42DC number 161 leads the California Zephyr train number 5 seen here climbing to tunnel 1 on the Moffat Subdivision. 15 minutes earlier this entire scene was blanketed in a thick fog; the remnants of the previous nights snow event. Light snow fell over most of the Front Range overnight leaving a light coating of snow just enough for a winter scene worth capturing.

CN 2436 leads westbound train 406, as they head downhill into Rothesay, New Brunswick during one of the first snowstorms of the year.

Canadian National GE C40-8M “cowl” No. 2403 leads CN train 347 through Brule Tunnel toward Park Gate, Alberta, as it enters Jasper National Park on the afternoon of July 12, 2014.

It's good to see that these meadows in the Alps seem to be still intact. In the lower regions you hardly ever see a meadow with a lot of different flowers, due to enormous production pressure which leads to 5-7 cuts per year, which doesn't help bio-diversity...

A repainted EMD SD75I leads BNSF Train G FTDBVA5 27H past the endangered CB&Q searchlights at East Halls on the BNSF St. Joseph Sub. I say "endangered", and don't take that word lightly, replacements are on site for several control points just down the track.

I have to say, these are probably my favorite orange engines on the roster at this point. I enjoy both photographing and running them. Lack of Trip Optimizer is a great start.

Also, I'm did a little watermark revamp and I went full color. I don't have a lot of pictures "stolen", but I get a little more annoyed by it every time. I hate for it to be distracting, in fact, I'd rather not use one at all, but at least the losers have to crop half the sky out.

CN 2263 leads train 406 as they hit a small snowbank left by the plows after the second storm of the year. Here's hoping the banks get bigger and bigger as the winter goes on.

Norfolk Southern ES44AC #8025 leads train #219 (Kansas City, MO - East Point, GA) through the crossovers at 'Jac Mac' just outside of Atlanta, GA. It took 11 years but this was the last of the NS heritage units I needed to shoot!

This alpine road with many hairpin turns leads to the Fraele Towers (built in the 14th century), an important strategic outpost of the Middle Ages. In the old days, it connected the Valtellina Valley in Italy with Switzerland and was known as the "path of salt and wine."

The route is included in the list of the most exciting and dangerous roads in the world.

MNR 6406 leads New Brunswick Southern Railway train 907 through Welsford, New Brunswick. Trailing are another two SD70M-2s, EMR 6403 and NBSR 6401. This is the first time I’ve been able to nab a trio of the new engines together on one train. Also cool is that one engine is from each of the three railways owned by Irving (Maine Northern, Eastern Maine and New Brunswick Southern). January 8, 2022.

66591 Leads three more class 66's out of Midland Road depot in Leeds. I was actually here in the hope I would see a Colas class 70 on cement wagons that I saw about half an hour earlier but they never came, I left when it started getting dark.

CN 2032 leads an empty limestone train around an S-curve in Culver, MN bound for Proctor.

Going home with a sunny shot here didn't seem possible as our first day was cloudy, and the following two days had no southbounds running late-morning. All hope was lost since the weather forecasted was cloudy. However, the clouds broke free and we were able to get two trains in sun here.

UP 1995 leads the ZG1SC 30 out of Ogden, Utah on New Year's Day, 2015.

Union Pacific 8777 leads a Pixley, California - Tuscola, Illinois grain empty through scenic Echo Canyon, Utah the morning of May 6, 2023. On the right is a giant boulder of conglomerate rock, which rolled down the mountain back in 1948, crossing the Lincoln Highway, and coming to a stop just shy of the Union Pacific tracks. It was determined to be stable, and remains a landmark. I figure if the passage of Big Boy 4014 couldn't set it free, nothing will.

Seminole Gulf Railway GP9 #580 leads a healthy cut of cars from the CSX interchange near Oneco South through Tallevast toward downtown Sarasota. The Seminole Gulf's Sarasota operation normally only runs about once a week to service a handful of local customers, but is currently required to make as many as five runs a week to accommodate diverted Fort Myers bound freight traffic. The SGLR's much bigger Fort Myers operation was severely impacted by Hurricane Ian, with the Caloosahatchee River bridge having been completely wiped out and rebuilding/repairs not having been completed yet. As a result, a lot of traffic destined for customers located in Fort Myers, mainly building products and propane, has been getting transloaded onto trucks on sidings and team tracks on the Sarasota line.

SGLR 580 normally serves as the back up engine to the B39-8E that generally provides the power for the otherwise weekly Sarasota run, but is currently being called into action to handle the severe temporary increase in traffic. Both engines are needed for switching maneuvers along the line with this amount of cars and sometimes even two crews will be called. The venerable former FEC GP9 is already 69 years old, having been built all the way back in 1954, and is the only high hood Geep on the Seminole Gulf system (and I think the only GP9 period left doing freight work on the SGLR).

So it was well worth getting up at 3am to make the 4.5 hour drive and back for a day's worth of shots of this classic old unit handling the freight traffic. Thankfully the 580 made the run this day and the B39-8E was just used to aid in the switching maneuvers. Tallevast, FL (Sarasota)

CN 2577 leads a priority intermodal out of Montreal, QC across a causeway spanning Lake Athabaska in Jasper National Park. The "lake" is actually a wide spot in the Athabaska River that carries melt water from the Athabaska Glacier north into Hudson Bay and eventually the Arctic ocean.

NS 5322 leads the bottle train West past B09 in East Chicago, IN.

GB&W C424 (314) leads the northbound local from Plover over the WCL crossing at Wood Street (WCL depot/operating HQ in background.) This is another view showing the manual interlocking at the "west" (eventually the "north") end of the WC's Stevens Point yard. The dispatcher who controlled it sat in the office on the second floor at the opposite end of that building - known to some as WC's "galactic headquarters" to differentiate the operational HQ from the corporate one in Rosemont, Illinois. If a train departed from the yard (coming at the camera in this view) and encountered a red signal here, often the rulebook four blasts of the whistle would result in a cleared signal at "Stevens Point West", and such clear signal would be acknowledged properly with two short toots. If the DS wasn't occupied with urgent matters at his desk (and he/she often was as things got busier and busier), a turn and wave from the DS through the window confirmed the highball and the crew was on its way to join the fray on the mainline...or, as I often said in the spirit of Jethro Tull's song, "Bungle in the Jungle."

Former EL SDP-45 #6687 leads an interesting set of power for "Flare Friday" as she heads a westbound freight over the Vermilion River. Helping out are two ex-PC units, an SD-40 and a U-25B. Given the nice patch job, definitely the right leader in my book.

37418 leads 11 TTA two axle fuel tanks over the viaduct at Ackworth on the line through Pontefract Baghill to Moorthorpe on the morning of March the 7th 2023. These wagons have been in store at Gascoigne Wood since mid November 2022 after being made redundant in their work carrying Aviation fuel from the Grangemouth Refinery. Running as train 6Z42, the 09:45 from Gascoigne Wood to Lydney, the wagons are heading for a new era in Preservation at the Dean Forest Railway.

CSX #3194 leads Q209 through Independence, Kentucky.

56078 leads the 6Z88 Drigg - Port of Workington pass Nethertown. 56113 was on the rear. 27 March 2023.

NSM 650 leads an empty tailings train past probably the most shot location on the Iron Range towards Silver Bay for another load before returning to the tailings pond later in the morning. The overlook looking towards "Railfan Rock" may be a common shot, but I understood why when I visited for the first time. It really is fantastic.

Direct Rail Services owned Intercity liveried 37419 'Carl Haviland 1954 - 2012' ' leads 4x RHTT sets (642036 + 642050, 642019 + 642041, 642047 + 642024, 642011 + 642044) past Ely Dock Junction, 6Z60 1042 from York Thrall Europa (Holgate Works) to Stowmarket D.G.L, in preparation for this years Autumn RHTT season.

D&RGW GP40 #3141 leads SP's BMSFU (Beckmann Mine to Stafford, TX rock train) down Comal Street in San Antonio, TX on 8 January 1994. The train's origin is approximately 14 miles from this point, up the Kerrville Branch.

Note C&IM SD38-2 #73 in trail. C&IM #70-75 were regulars on various SP unit and manifest trains around south Texas at this time.

This trackage is now gone, having been moved one block east to run adjacent to South Salado Street. Criminal Attorney J.L Blomster has moved to another location in San Antonio, and a whole criminal justice infrastructure has grown up along this street.

EA022 leads one of the last few BM&LP coal empties out of Page, AZ on the day before all operations ceased here.

D&H 7304 leads Shoreham 1 east around the curve between University Ave. and St. Anthony Pkwy. on August 10, 2018. The Geeps are running stacks from Humboldt Yard to the intermodal ramp at Shoreham, after 199 and 196 finally cleared up during a busy CP morning here in Minneapois.

CN 2329 leads westbound train '406' shortly after departing Moncton, heading for Saint John, New Brunswick. With the BCOL in the consist, I wanted to do more of a side shot. There's not to many good areas for shooting wide shots here, so I decided to make good use of this piece of farm equipment in the foreground.

I am capable of creating hundreds of such landscapes, which leads me to ponder the evolving significance of photographing landscapes. With the advent of AI-generated landscapes, the straightforwardness and novelty of capturing natural scenes through traditional photography begin to fade. In the past, photography was regarded as a means to preserve and immortalize the beauty of landscapes. It allowed us to capture a moment in time, freezing the essence of a place forever. However, as AI advances and creates astonishingly realistic landscapes, the need for photography as a mere replication of reality becomes less apparent. AI can generate an endless array of landscapes, each unique and crafted with meticulous detail. These digitally created scenes possess a remarkable realism that rivals traditional photography. They offer a seemingly infinite palette of possibilities, where one can explore fantastical realms, reimagine familiar landscapes, or even create entirely new environments. With AI-generated landscapes at our disposal, we are no longer confined to capturing what already exists. We can now delve into the realm of imagination and bring to life scenes that transcend the boundaries of reality. This shift challenges us to redefine the purpose of landscape photography. Instead of aiming to capture the objective reality of a place, photography can become a tool for personal expression and storytelling. It can be a means to convey emotions, evoke memories, or communicate a unique perspective on the world. Photographers can now focus on capturing the fleeting moments, the play of light and shadow, or the human elements that interact with the landscapes. Furthermore, photography can serve as a source of inspiration for AI algorithms. By capturing real landscapes through the lens, photographers can contribute to the training data that informs the creation of AI-generated landscapes. It becomes a symbiotic relationship between human creativity and technological advancement, where each influences and enhances the other. In this evolving landscape of artistic creation, the role of photography is transformed. It is no longer solely about replication, but about interpretation, personal vision, and pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling. While AI-generated landscapes offer incredible possibilities, they cannot replace the human eye and the unique perspective that each photographer brings to their craft. Ultimately, the significance of photographing landscapes lies in the power to capture the intangible essence of a place, to tell stories, and to evoke emotions. It is a realm where artistry, imagination, and technology intersect, forging new paths for creative expression.

Monongahela Railway Super 7 B23-S7 2301 leads P&LE power north past a farmhouse near Holbrook, PA on the Waynesburg Southern Branch with a train of RSR and P&LE hoppers that loaded at Federal #2 Mine at Miracle Run, WV on the afternoon of July 27, 1990.

A pair of KCS SD70ACe's catch the last vestiges of light leading Norfolk Southern train #187 (Macon, GA - Birmingham, AL) rolling through the small town of Waco in west Georgia.

Charger #310 leads the Empire Builder down Short Line Hill.

They took about 2 hours to get from St Cloud to MSP (while I stood for almost an hour on the cold and windy bridge).I can only assume they set out an engine at Midway. A bit frustrating since I usually time this pretty well.

PC U30B 2866 leads a Westbound Conrail freight at the station in Hornell, NY in August, 1977. This was my first visit to Hornell, and the action was non-stop between the CR and D&H trains. I was shooting Kodacolor print film with the old Graphlex camera. Quality is not the best, but you certainly can't get anything like this today, so I appreciate the images I have. The 2nd unit is the only GP35 that I am aware of to wear the Reading green scheme that was on the Reading GP39-2's and GP40-2's.
