A true open-air museum, Rome has preserved and enriched its beauty over the centuries. Each corner of the streets reveals a treasure, be it ancient, religious, architectural or even gastronomic. All roads lead to Rome, and one should not resist, simply take it and go, enjoy the beauty and admire the eternal city.

The old lead mine is situated on the moors between Cononley and Lothersdale , North Yorkshire

The 1840s and 1850s saw the high point of production at Cononley Lead Mine which was owned, then as now, by the Dukes of Devonshire. The Dukes of Devonshire had inherited the manor once owned by the Earls of Cumberland.

Although there were exceptions, most of the men employed in the mine had moved relatively short distances to Cononley from other lead mining areas in Yorkshire.

Production of lead ore, latterly very limited, continued until 1881 when the mine was closed.

It is now a Grade II Listed building

During August and September, we observed 4 juvenile Piping Plovers in the same general area of the beach. They were usually in the tire tracks or up in the dunes on the dry sand. Nice images but I prefer my shorebirds in the surf or on the wet sand. It was late in the afternoon with about 90 minutes of light left when we came upon our 4 friends. Were where they? In the tire tracks of course. We had to make a decision. Do we wait and hope that the birds move to the water or continue on our way and hope to find something else to work with. We decided to give them 15 minutes. Boy am I glad we waited. They did indeed head to the water and were outrageously cooperative. They made up for all the hours we patiently waited over the summer. We took tons of images but this was my favorite.

It was so cute watching the baby elephants play!

The nail is coming out of the wall because of the weight:-)

I had a few variations of this shot but settled on this. I love writing words on paper. My Fountain Pen is a constant companion. I love pencils also but usually mechanical pencils with a soft 2B lead.

I have a great deal of quips, song lyrics and ideas all over the house.

Happy Macro Mondays

The old wall on Lingmoor Fell provides a great Lead-in line for the drama of the snow-capped Langdale Pikes.

One of my attempts at the "Macro Mondays" theme "Tradition".

The New Years Eve tradition of 'Bleigießen' (molibdomancy/lead-pouring), is commonly found in certain parts of Europe and some other countries, if online sources are to be believed. Small metal figurines (in shapes of good luck symbols, bottles etc.) are molten in a special spoon over a candle and then poured into a bowl of water! The shapes which are created by that are then interpreted as signs/symbols for the coming year!

In my home country of Austria it‘s not something everybody does, but it seems to be common enough for these little metal figurines to be sold in grocery stores all around! If you stop to think about it, it‘s probably not the best idea ever to add molten metal and fumes into the mix of fireworks, lack of sleep and alcohol that accompany that night, but I guess part of tradition is also not constantly questioning it 😅!

Although nearly fully grown and independent, before crossing the path, this male kitten wanted his mother to take the lead.
