In Sweden we say (translated) "A loved child has many names". The Laughing Kookaburra must be loved. It has 23 names in English according to Avibase! How could it be? It looks more like a crocodile than a Kingfisher. When you hear the call you will understand... This bird is looking at me in Kingfisher Park in Julatten, Australia.

29/33 - Lotus was a champion posing with the reindeer ears on, much better than I expected and better than the other 3, even Chester :-) She's become quite the Chester copycat of late, and has really warmed to the idea of getting her photo taken :-)
Laughing Kookaburras are believed to pair for life. The nest is a bare chamber in a naturally occurring tree hollow. Both sexes share the incubation duties and both care for the young. Other Laughing Kookaburras, usually offspring of the previous one to two years, act as 'helpers' during the breeding season. Every bird in the group shares all parenting duties.
