I spent a pleasant day in the company of my friend Peter Stephens exploring the churches between Norwich and Loddon. Apart from a couple to the south of the Beccles road they were all open, and it was a pleasure to explore a succession of small, unassuming but welcoming churches. I last visited them about ten years ago, and although not much has changed it was pleasing to see that a couple of them were in safer hands than had seemed on my previous visit.

I came back through Norwich and caught the train back to Ipswich with dozens of disconsolate Norwich City fans who had just seen their team lose at home to West Bromwich Albion, leaving them perilously close to the drop. On the way back on the train I took part in a three-way conversation with my son in Amsterdam and my daughter in Madrid. Ten years ago, when they were little and I first explored these churches, I don't think I would have thought such a thing likely, or even possible.

The following day, Norwich City sacked their manager Chris Hughton.

At the 84 GP I stood next to Niki in pit lane as he was yelling instructions to his crew chief while the engine was running and the mechanics were working on it. I had a pit pass that year and there were NO garages, they just worked out in the sun.

Johann Michael Haydn (German; 14 September 1737 – 10 August 1806) was an Austrian composer of the Classical period, the younger brother of Joseph Haydn. Joseph regarded his brother's music highly, to the point of feeling Michael's religious works were superior to his own. Haydn's sacred choral works are generally regarded as his most important; his musical taste and skill showed themselves best in his church compositions and were already in his lifetime old-fashioned. Some of these works include the Requiem pro defuncto Archiepiscopo Sigismundo (Requiem for the death of Archbishop Siegmund) in C minor, which greatly influenced the Requiem by Mozart; Missa Hispanica (which he exchanged for a diploma at Stockholm); his magnificent last St. Francis Mass in D minor; the motet Lauda Sion which he wished to have sung at his funeral; and a set of graduals, forty-two of which are reprinted in Anton Diabelli's Ecclesiasticon. He wrote several settings of the mass ordinary in German by Franz Seraph von Kohlbrenner, named Deutsches Hochamt. Haydn was also a prolific composer of secular music, including 41 symphonies and wind partitas, and multiple concertos and chamber music including a string quintet in C major once thought to have been by his brother Joseph. There was another case of posthumous mistaken identity involving Michael Haydn: for many years, the G major symphony now known to be Michael Haydn's Symphony No. 25 was thought to be Mozart's Symphony No. 37 and assigned as K. 444. The confusion arose because an autograph was discovered with the opening movement of the symphony in Mozart's hand and the rest in another's hand. It is now known that Mozart composed the slow introduction to the first movement but the rest of the work is by Michael. Indeed, several of Michael Haydn's works influenced Mozart.

Franz Xaver Hornöck (1751 - 1822) trained himself in art under the direction of his father in Munich and lived in Salzburg since 1805 as a citizen and his art, which he practiced as a portrait and history painter. Many of his works can be found in the Reichersberg monastery in the Innviertel, but most of them in Salzburg itself, where, in addition to numerous portraits of private individuals, those of "Michael Haydn", "Professor Sandbichler", "Hofmusikus Stadler", "Lyceal- Rector Thanner "; furthermore the portraits of their majesties the emperor "Franz I" and the king "Maximilian I of Bavaria", both repeated several times. In the Capuchin Church in Salzburg on the side altar of the epistle is written by his hand an “H. Joseph with the baby Jesus ”, which is particularly praised by connoisseurs. Other churches in Salzburg also have works by him to show. Horneck was also a collector of copperplate engravings and owned a collection of the same, which numbered 5000 pieces and some of them were very valuable.
