I dug this photo out whilst trawling through my archives. It was taken many years ago with the latest technology for a point and shoot camera. A Sony cybershot 3.1MP which at the time seemed amazing.
The Cockpit heavily modified instrument panel to accommodate the latest technology that was not in this original aircraft.
THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD
The car displayed is the only known surviving Krastin automobile. In 2012 the car was bought in the US by a Latvian vintage car collector.
Its design is several years ahead of the early 20th century American automobile standards: engine in front, rear-wheel drive by shaft instead of the then-common chain, a proprietary 3-speed gearbox. The engine has an unusual counter-clockwise rotation.
Tonneau type body with rear doors. A folding steering wheel to facilitate the driver's access to the narrow bucket seat.
A LATVIAN BUILDING CARS IN AMERICA
In 1901, shareholders invest 200,000 dollars in the Krastin Automobile Company in Cleveland. This is even more than when the Ford Motor Company is set up two years later.
Augusts Krastiņš was born in 1861 in Liepāja, Latvia. The baron sends his ingenious locksmith to study in Germany, but in 1892 Krastiņš heads even further - the "land of opportunities" of America.
While working at an electrical factory in Cleveland, he learns the latest technologies and designs his first car in his spare time in 1896. The undertaking is a success, and a new company is born.
Each Krastin Automobile Company car is unique and full of innovative technical solutions, such as the previously unseen "self-cleaning spark plugs", a steering-assisted gear shifter, a special carburettor. August Krastiņš registers 12 patents.
In 1904 the Krastin Automobile Company factory burns down and the company is shut down. Approximately 10 Krastin cars have been made.
Augusts Krastiņš passed away in 1942 without turning his dream into reality for the second time.

I am using this combo quite a lot (Fuji X-Pro1 and Helios 44M-7). Both are second-hand items. The camera is approaching 'vintage' status and the lens has it already. Prices have recently gone up, but you can still get this or similar combos for comparatively little money. In this case, you would get a very solid piece of equipment - it would not offer the latest technology (and this combo does respond best to manual photography) but in terms of image quality and artistic versatility this combination is able to produce the goods. Shot done with the Fuji X-Pro3 plus Samyang 135/2 at F22.
His car is Horizont Tiana RS AUDI. This is a sports-oriented compact prestigious car, produced in limited quantities. The abbreviation "RS" in the name of the car comes from the German RennSport (Russian motorsport). Like all Audi RS vehicles, this car is packed with the latest technology and can be considered a vehicle for the company's image. In addition, all versions of the Audi RS are equipped with a quattro system based on Torsen differentials for all-wheel drive vehicles.
Flit jimmies the latch on the skylight and lowers herself down using the latest technology in heist and hacker ware. She cracks the password in less than two minutes; these corporate junkies aren't as smart as their finely pressed suits would make them look, she carefully types in the name of the company and the year, all lower case... bingo.
After cracking the encryption codes and shoving her finger
into the usb drive, she downloads years of hidden secrets, passwords and gains access to the digital key to the wall safe.
She dumps what she can on the desk and takes the unmarked loot, shoving the stacks of bills into her dufflebag before reeling back up and out of the unit a few hundred thousand euros richer.

LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Polytechnic University’s iconic Innovation, Science and Technology (IST) Building in Lakeland now ranks as one of the 16 “most breathtaking” buildings in the world, according to a survey of architects, placing it alongside iconic structures such as the Parthenon in Greece, the Empire State Building and Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Fallingwater” residence.
Business Insider’s “Tech Insider” magazine surveyed 16 prominent architects, asking each to pick just one structure they fondly think of as “breathtaking.” Architect Marica McKeel of Studio MM worked on the IST Building design and said, “Not only do I love the design of the Innovation, Science and Technology Building, but I feel a real connection to this project and to the Lakeland community as my father grew up in Lakeland and I still frequently visit family there.”
Designed by internationally-renowned architect Dr. Santiago Calatrava, the IST Building is the cornerstone of Florida Poly’s campus and the University’s main classroom and laboratory building. The 162,000-square-foot, white-domed building is a moveable and functional work of art, with a louvered roof system that adjusts with the sun’s angle, surrounded by a ring of curved metal pergolas that shade its outer terrace and walkways.
Calatrava repeatedly breaks new ground in architecture, with soaring designs for a new transit station at the rebuilt World Trade Center, a spiraling “Turning Torso” skyscraper in Sweden and the Peace Bridge in Calgary. Among the numerous awards associated with the IST Building is the distinguished Engineering News Record’s (ENR) Global Project of the Year award.
“The IST Building was created to provide an inspiring, modern atmosphere for learning, collaboration and innovation,” said Florida Poly President Dr. Randy K. Avent. “It’s invigorating to walk into this building each day and work alongside faculty, students and staff in one of the world’s most advanced structures.”
The IST Building houses 26 classrooms, the Aula Magna auditorium, faculty and administrative offices, an 11,000-square-foot Commons area and 11 innovation labs – including a 3D printing lab, cyber security lab and heath informatics lab – where students are able to get hands-on experience with the latest technology. Skanska USA was the lead contractor.
Other top accolades earned by the IST Building include:
2014 Engineering News Record Global Best Project by Engineering News Record
Best Projects: 2014 Project of the Year – Southeast Region, Best Higher Education/Research by Engineering News Record
2014 Metal Construction News Design Award in Metal Building Systems

A 12 image focus stack processed in camera with the Canon R10 and RF24-240 lens.
I took this picture in 2008 with a square box Nikon E5400 camera, 14.5mp, F:7.1, 10mm, ISO 50 and 1/13 second.
My first digital camera.
I have learned a lot since then. It was fun to update this old image with new techniques and the latest technology.
Don’t throw out those old images!
Southern Alberta, Canada.
Wood Island Light is an active lighthouse on the eastern edge of Wood Island in Saco Bay, on the southern coast of Maine. The light is just outside the entrance to Biddeford Pool and the end of the Saco River. The lighthouse is a 47-foot conical white tower of granite rubble. The light itself sits 71 feet above mean high water. Its automated beacon alternates between green and white every 10 seconds.
Wood Island Light is Maine's second-oldest lighthouse (after Portland Head Light) and the nation's eleventh-oldest. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Wood Island Light Station on January 21, 1988, reference number 87002274.
The United States Coast Guard maintains the active beacon of the lighthouse, while The Friends of Wood Island Light, a non-profit organization, has assisted the Coast Guard by maintaining and restoring parts of the lighthouse and keepers dwellings.
Wood Island Light was established in 1808 under the orders of President Thomas Jefferson. The original tower was an octagonal wooden structure. After it rotted, a granite tower was erected to replace it in 1839. In 1858, the new tower was renovated to allow the installation of a 4th-order Fresnel lens. The current keepers dwellings were also built then.
In the 1960s, the original lantern room was removed and an aerobeacon was installed. This was deemed unsightly by locals and when the lighthouse was automated in 1986, a new lantern room was fabricated and installed on the lighthouse along with a VRB-25 beacon, then the latest technology. In 2013, the VRB-25 was replaced by a VLB-44, an LED beacon with a service life of ten years.
Kynance Cove. Popular since Victorian times, the brilliant turquoise water and white sand, with islands, caves and unexpected views are still a powerful draw today.
Located less than 2 miles from The Lizard and once remote and difficult to get to, the National Trust built a new toll road to a large car park on the downs above the cove.
The beach's defining features are the serpentine rock formations with a distinctive pinnacle to the north of the beach.
Kynance is considered to be one of the prettiest coves in Cornwall and as a result one of the most painted and photographed. It is now owned by the National Trust who have just carried out a two-year project using the latest technologies designed to harness renewable energy, improve bathing water quality and protect the environment.
This lake, the Tasik (Lake) Titiwangsa is located right in the city of KL. From this angle, you can see the Petronas Twin Towers in the distance and on the right is Istana Budaya. Istana Budaya or The Palace of Culture is a venue for all types performing art just like the Sydney Opera House is for Australia.
Klang Valley is the basin where the city of Kuala Lumpur is situated. In the past few centuries, long before the establishment of a township which today we call it Kuala Lumpur, people had already started to flock the valley for its soils were rich in tin mineral (Chemical formula for tin is Sn, for Stannum). The buried treasures of tin ore came in abundance with millions of tonnes waiting to be unearthed. So to speak, everywhere in the area, tin could be found underneath its belly, of which I’d satirically put it; they could even get a handful or two by just digging using a hoe in the backyard of their homes.
During the dawn of the 20th century, the craze in finding this precious silvery commodity saw a dramatic turn when the colossal dredging machines with latest technology of its time were introduced. Those gigantic dredgers started to gnaw the earth at the speed one had never imagined before. And to yield the harvest with the amount that one never thought possible in the earlier decades. Perhaps if there were no such regulations imposed, they would have had chewed the whole Klang Valley and turned into a lake as big as Lake Erie in North America. Hence, Kuala Lumpur would then cease to exist and I have a feeling that my place of origin, MELOR, would now be the capital city of Malaysia instead. (Now it makes sense to you why my flickr URL is melor)
It turned out to be blessing in disguise for the mining activities in the pasts that the residues are the disused mines we today call it as lakes with pleasant after-effects to the city and her dwellers. Those lakes are there to grace the reckless exterior of the concrete jungle by providing handsome views; it’s cooling and picturesque too – and conceivably became a popular place for lovers to exercise their killer lines – while some lonely dudes would take pleasure in "skodeng" excursions.(Sorry, Sorry, I have no further explanation on what "skodeng" is, maybe next time)
Until then....
Happy Friday!
HAVE A NICE WEEKEND!
A couple of photos of the impressive "Deep Explorer" in Bay Bulls. I had previously posted a couple of photos of her but I found these two showed off some neat details. "Deep Explorer" is an Offsahore Subsea Construction and Diving Support Vessel designed for the demanding North Sea / Canada conditions. When "Deep Explorer" entered service in 2017, she was the most modern and versatile diving support vessel in the world, thanks to the latest technology in diving control systems, a 400 tonne box boom crane, a large deck area, a working moonpool, a diving moonpool, and work-class ROVs. Importantly, the vessel features a state-of-the-art 24-man twin bell saturated dive system rated to 350 metres (1148 ft). She is capable of working on diving and subsea construction projects in extreme weather conditions. "Deep Explorer" is 157 metres in length overall (515 ft) and she has accomodations for 150.
I think the infra-red camera has locked on to me... Used mainly on the 132kV and 33/66kV power lines, this technique can also show heat coming from buildings to measure how energy efficient they are. Utilising four-axis stabilisation, this camera system delivers exceptional TV performance, together with the latest technology in thermal imaging.
About 130 to 160 km of line can be surveyed in a normal five-hour flying day split into two sorties. Two men and a Land Rover would take 10 days.
“On a personal note: I experienced my first PC crash at Christmas. My husband managed to revive the PC, but by February, it finally stopped working for good. It was particularly annoying because I have so many tried-and-true programs on the PC that once cost a lot of money and that I didn’t want to give up easily. So, my husband completely reinstalled the PC on a second attempt. Adobe Photoshop CS6 is running again, as if by a miracle, even though support strongly recommended upgrades and actually nothing is supported by Windows 7 anymore. From the Topaz programs, I have currently lost two plug-ins, but the rest are working again. Nik filters, once free under Google, now cost again, but here too, we were able to reinstall all plug-ins for free. I admit, my equipment is an old dinosaur and I know that many of you are up to date with the latest technology. But it also brings joy (and sorrow) to keep the old, reliable things going - who knows how long my PC will last.”
The crab cutters have also become bigger and more modern. Stuffed with the latest technology they go hunting for prey. And yet this old fishing romanticism is still present at the cutter harbours for the spectators as ever. But it is a big competition at sea, because the nets are difficult to fill despite the most modern technology. Overfishing is unmistakable everywhere.
Within the past few years the U of M Duluth started allowing photos to be taken within the mansion. Here is the billiards room more or less the same way as it was originally used.
The construction of the mansion took three years, ending in 1908. At the time, it cost the Congdons $854,000 to build Glensheen (estimated $21 Million in today’s market). It was widely considered an architectural marvel and was outfitted with all the latest technology and luxuries, including 39 rooms and a separate water system from the city designed specifically for the property.
The mansion has a dark side though. In 1977, one of the mansion’s heiresses, named Elisabeth Congdon, and her nurse, Velma Pietila, were both brutally murdered by Roger Caldwell, the second husband of Congdon’s adopted daughter, Marjorie. The nurse was bludgeoned to death with a candlestick and Elisabeth was suffocated in her bed. Up until recently, tour guides were forbidden to discuss the mansion’s murders, although some would reportedly give details upon request.
In the end of the 19th and in the beginning of the 20th century Flyonovo village belonged to Princess Mary Tenisheva, who organized agricultural school with the best teachers, unique library, the latest technologies and created here an artistic colony.
She managed to realize the ideas of the revival of the Russian national art at her estate. Here at the edge of the centuries worked making the masterpieces of the new style many of the brightest and most famous artist - such as Repin, Vrubel, Roerich, Benoit, Serov, and many other celebrities.
In 1900, she opened an artisan workshop, which mainly produced ceramic and carving, and invited the painter Sergey Malyutin to supervise it. The apprentices, selected by Malyutin, were local peasants.
Malyutin stayed in Talashkino until 1903, and in the meanwhile designed a house in Flyonovo based on Russian fairy tales. Its most striking feature consists of brightly painted wooden assemblies that represented the symbolism deeply embedded in myths and folk legends such as the Firebird.
Now it is a museum.

I was chatting with some folks the other day and was talking about our favorite/most known builds, and this is actually one that I haven't posted here - but it's been a few years since I actually built one so I figured I'd give it a remake using newer parts and bits... along with the original iterations of the Locust Drones.
The parkview campus' main entrance. Built in 2003 this is a ultra-modern state-of-the art facility. The classrooms and the labs are top-notch equipped with the latest technology has to offer.
The building’s “lighted industrial” design theme reflects its purpose as an engineering teaching facility. This engine, along with a baggage-mail car and a terminal caboose represent Paducah's railroad heritage beginning with the first railroad line in 1855. Over the next 150 years that 60 mile reach into Tennessee spread north, west, south and east and now involves three major railroad systems.
Over the years, the Illinois Central Railroad has evolved into the Canadian National Railway, a regional railroad connecting Paducah to Louisville and a private company that rebuilds diesel locomotives, adding the latest technology for domestic use and export.
This Mikado was built in 1923 by Lima Locomotives Works for the I.C.R.R. and rebuilt in the Paducah shops in 1940 and 1951 before being donated to the city of Paducah in 1964.

This is yet another build loosely inspired in Game of Thrones, but featuring some Roman and even Georgian thematics. Fantasy allows us to get creative and I believe a good result was achieved here.

I’ve been waiting to publicly mention this for a long time, and today’s the way that our purchase of a house in Bulgaria is complete. At some point later this year, we will be moving permanently overseas!
In a normal year, we would visit Bulgaria during the summer months. My wife was born and raised there, and we have happy memories of meeting family and friends, in addition to exploring the beautiful country. Bulgaria has seven major mountain ranges, valleys, caves, waterfalls and a coastline on the Black Sea; it’s one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. This image is of Devetashka Cave, one of the coolest caves I’ve been to.
The decision was not made lightly. The pandemic taught me a number of valuable lessons, one of the biggest being that I can successfully work from home, and home can be anywhere on the planet. We’ve just purchased a home in a small village near Varna, and I am in the process of obtaining a long-term visa (my wife holds dual citizenship and my daughter qualifies for it as well).
Creatively, I think this will be a huge advantage. The cost of living is lower and we will be renting our home here in Canada which will lift most of our financial burdens. This means I can take on any crazy passion project and give it as much time as I desire without worry of financial compensation. The cost of living is lower, and we’ll be able to lead a slower pace to everything, escaping the “rat race” that seems to consume many people in North America – myself included.
If anyone has admired my images and wants prints, or was thinking about getting a copy of my book ( skycrystals.ca/product/pre-order-macro-photography-the-un... ), the time to do so is now. I am printing constantly right now to fulfill past orders and new ones daily, as I will not have the ability to do so for an undefined amount of time in the future. If you’re curious about a print of anything, just shoot me an e-mail to don@komarechka.com or message me here.
If anyone has known me personally, you might have heard of my love of growing things. Fruits, vegetables, our gardens here in Canada have become an extremely biodiverse permaculture oasis. As much as I am absorbed in the latest technology, I have learned how valuable it is to slow down and step back in time a little. Surrounding oneself in carefully cultivated nature is a gift that I whole-heartedly embrace and I’ll be able to do much more of that in the coming years.
Once everything is settled, I’m sure I’ll do workshops or photo tours in Bulgaria. It really is a dream come true for us, and we are incredibly excited. We are in the process of selling our vehicles – if anyone wants to buy a 2019 Tesla Model 3 Performance, get in touch!
As much as I will miss Canada, we will have the means to travel and visit frequently. This will be the biggest adventure of our lives, and the wheels are in motion to make it happen now. Wish us luck! The journey continues. :)

DREAMING OF A CULTURE TEMPLE
In 1912, H.E. van Gelder (1876-1960) director of the Art Museum. He dreams of the construction of a new large museum complex, including concert and conference rooms. In 1914 he argued in a museum note for the construction of even a number of new museums. After the First World War, the municipality made a site available at Stadhouderslaan. Architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856-1934) becomes the architect. Van Gelder and Berlage have known each other for some time and find each other in the conviction that art can elevate the people. This new museum should therefore not have an elite appearance and should become a culture temple for the common man. Moreover, it must become a modern museum, equipped with the latest technologies and presentation techniques.

This summer RSPB Scotland is asking visitors to puffin colonies around the UK and Ireland to play a vital role in an innovative project aimed at helping puffin conservation. The conservation organisation is asking people to become Puffarazzi in aid of discovering more about what puffins feed their chicks.
Puffins are one of our best loved birds and over the summer months as they breed along our shores many people visit their colonies to catch sight of these birds, with their colourful bills and eye markings. However, puffin numbers have plummeted in recent years across the UK and Europe, leading to the species being declared vulnerable to global extinction.
Now, visitors to these colonies can play a part in a new citizen science project by photographing puffins carrying fish for their chicks in June and July and uploading the images to a dedicated webpage www.rspb.org.uk/projectpuffin. Here RSPB Scotland will analyse the photos and identify the fish to build up a picture of what puffins around the UK and Ireland are feeding their chicks.
Puffarazzi is part of Project Puffin, which launched earlier this year with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund Scotland. The project aims to find out more about what puffins feed their chicks, where they go to find food and how their numbers are changing by combining the latest technology with citizen science.

He used the latest technologies in refrigeration and product marketing to extend the fruit growing season for strawberries, and for the sale of other soft fruits. He was a founder of Clarkson Co-operative Storage Limited. David wrote a number of articles for the Ontario Department of Agriculture’s annual report, and was feature correspondent for the Fruit Growers’ Association of Ontario.
Located in Jaipur, India, the Cinema Raj Mandir is one of the landmarks of the city. Built in an art deco style, yet with Indian motifs, it echos past eras of the large movie palaces that were built in the 1920's and 30's even though it actually opened in 1976. It's said to be the largest single screen cinema in Asia with state-of-the-art sound and projection.
—from Wikipedia

Saco Bay, Maine.
Wood Island Light is an active lighthouse on the eastern edge of Wood Island in Saco Bay, on the southern coast of Maine. The light is just outside the entrance to Biddeford Pool and the end of the Saco River. The lighthouse is a 47-foot (14 m) conical white tower of granite rubble. The light itself sits 71 feet (22 m) above mean high water.
HISTORY
LEGENDS AND LORE
Eben Emerson served as Lightkeeper from 1861 to 1865. On March 16, 1865, he saved the crew of the British brig Edyth Anne from drowning in a heavy storm near the lighthouse; for this action he was commended by the Canadian government and rewarded with a pair of binoculars.
Thomas Henry Orcutt, a former sea captain and previous keeper at Saddleback Ledge Light served as keeper of Wood Island Light for 19 years (1886–1905). His dog, Sailor, became famous for ringing the station's fog bell to greet passing ships by taking the bell cord in mouth and pulling it with his teeth.
In the 1890s Wood Island Light and Wood Island were host to a grisly murder-suicide. A local squatter and part-time lobsterman was living on the west end of the island. The squatter had been involved in an earlier altercation on the mainland and was approached by a sheriff's deputy in his squatter shack on the island. The squatter murdered the sheriff's deputy. Realizing what he had done he attempted to turn himself in to lighthouse keeper Thomas Orcutt who, in fear, turned him away. The squatter returned to his shack and committed suicide. Legend has it that the ghost of the murdered deputy still haunts the lighthouse and island (Wikipedia.)

The 4E49 11.29 Daventry to Doncaster Iport liner passes the impressive Cemex works on the outskirts of Rugby.
With its origins in the early 19th century, the company was founded in 1862 as the Rugby Lias Lime & Cement Company Ltd before being renamed the Rugby Portland Cement Company Ltd in 1872, in 1979 it was renamed the Rugby Group plc. In 2000 Rugby Cement was taken over by the RMC Group, which was itself taken over by the Mexican firm Cemex in 2005. Cement production still continues at the New Bilton site in Rugby under Cemex ownership.
The business was first started in 1825 as a small family business by two local businessmen Thomas Walker and his son George Walker when they started producing lime mortar at a site on their land at New Bilton and nearby Newbold-on-Avon, exploiting locally available deposits of what Professor H.B. Woodward described in 1898 as "the finest inland section of lower lias limestone in the country".
The first public company the Rugby Lias Lime & Cement Company Ltd was founded in 1862. In around 1870 the company began producing portland cement, and the company was renamed the Rugby Portland Cement Company Ltd. in 1872.
The next milestone in the company's history occurred in 1933 when Sir Halford Reddish became the managing director of the company. The company began to expand its activities, acquiring four plants at nearby Southam in 1934, Rochester in 1937, Gillingham in 1939, and Stockton in 1945. The first two were rebuilt and modernised with the latest technology, but the latter two were soon closed down as they competed with the Southam and Rochester plants.
In 1955, the company founded an Australian subsidiary, Cockburn Cement Ltd, in Perth, Australia, which was later merged in 1999 into Adelaide Brighton Cement.
In 1965 a 92 km pipeline was opened to transport chalk as slurry from Kensworth Chalk Pit, Bedfordshire to the Rugby plant.
By the 1980s the company branched out from its Portland cement base to offer a wider variety of cement types, including sulfate-resistant cements, cements for the offshore oil industry, and quick-drying cements.
In 1984 the company bought the Addison Corporation of Atlanta, Georgia, thus entering the American construction market, and also saw it enter the joinery market.
In the late 1990s, the plant at Rugby was upgraded at a cost of £200 million to a production capacity of 1.8 million tonnes. At the same time the plants at Southam and Rochester were closed down as production was concentrated at Rugby.
The Eurocopter EC135 (now Airbus H135) is a twin-engine helicopter with a long German and French heritage.
All in all Kynance is one of the prettiest coves in Cornwall and as a result one of the most painted and photographed. It is now owned by the National Trust who have just carried out a two-year project using the latest technologies designed to harness renewable energy, improve bathing water quality and protect the environment.

Excerpt from the poster:
The cartonnage encasing the priestess’ mummified body is decorated with colourful scenes. Human- and animal-headed deities protect her, their wings outspread. On her chest, a falcon with a green ram’s head and sun disk symbolizes the sun god Ra as he emerges at dawn.

Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. Mt. 11: 28-30
At some point all things created by man wear out. What was once the latest technology soon becomes a mere memory.
