The Gulls arrive before the ice has melted, and they waste no time. When the ice gets this dark, it is on the verge of melting.

Une Mouette au bord du Wharf de La Salie.
Poème de Verlaine :
"Je ne sais pourquoi
Mon esprit amer
Pourquoi, pourquoi ?"

Pacific Gull, Larus pacificus
≠=====================≠
On a day when most birds had wisely stayed in bed, this big gull came slowly down the beachline and I was able to get it against just the dark water backdrop
The common gull, mew gull, or sea mew (Larus canus) is a medium-sized gull that breeds in the Palearctic, northern Europe, and northwestern North America. The names "common gull" and "mew gull" may also be used to refer to specifically the European and North American subspecies respectively. Many common gulls migrate further south in winter. There are differing accounts as to how the species acquired its vernacular name (see Etymology section below).
The name "sea mew" is a calque of the Dutch name "zee meeuw".
