Largest kingfisher in the Americas with exceptionally enormous bill and raucous calls. Blue-gray with shaggy crest, white collar, and rufous belly.

The largest known wingspan from a wild female Verreaux's Eagle Owl measured nearly 164 cm (5 ft 5 in). Also commonly known as the Milky Eagle Owl, this species is widespread in sub-Saharan Africa. A member of the genus Bubo, it is the largest African owl, measuring up to 66 cm in total length.

Verreaux's Eagle Owl is mainly grey in colour and is distinguishable from other large owls by its bright pink eyelids, a feature shared with no other owl species in the world.

I have no idea what this type of Lily is called but it should be named Gigantica . I have two pots of Lily Regale they are also white but rather more delicate and intensely fragrant . This pot of unnamed lilies always flowers after the Regale but with much less perfume

So how big are they ? I measured this one after I photographed it the diameter was seven inches and the length of the flower just over nine inches . So it's easily the biggest individual flower I grow . I wonder where in the world it is from and what pollinates it it would be a big task

Possible ID from Peggyhr in Canada Its possibly Lilium candidum, the Madonna lily, is a plant in the true lily family. It is native to the Balkans and Middle East

Yellow Black or White, all are precious in Gods Sight !!

Among the largest birds in North America. The large-bodied, long-legged and small-headed look of a turkey is distinctive. Appears dark from a distance. Often seen in small groups in open fields near woods. Gobbling often audible in the spring and early summer. (eBird)

It was ferociously hot so this male turkey, one of a gang of three, decided to take a break from terrorizing birders and have a nap instead.

The largest accessible cave in the western Harz offers interesting insights into animal and geological history. Thousands of years ago bears and wolves lived there. The cave in a forest area near the Herzberg district of Scharzfeld is a naturally formed cavity in 270 million year old Zechstein dolomite rock. The cave is the information center of the Harz Geopark and a natural and cultural monument.

Eastern Fox Squirrel.

The largest tree squirrel at 17 to 28 inches in length. It has three color phases: in the northeastern part of the range, gray above and yellowish below; in western part, bright rust below; in southern part, black often with white blaze on face and white tail tip. In South Carolina, they are typically black with white ears and nose.

They inhabit oak-hickroy woods and in the south, live oak and mixed forests, cypress and mangrove swamps and piney areas.

Except for the New England area they range throughout the eastern United States to roughly the Dakotas, northeastern Colorado and eastern Texas.

This is one of the largest waterfalls in the Eistobel natural reserve in the allgäu alps. Here, the water of the river Oberer Argen is falling, in several cascades, overall and over a distance of about 3 kilometres, 70 meters down. The play is framed by up to 130 meters high walls of rock. Here You find a beautiful place for hiking ore just for relaxing. If You really want to enjoy the nature and the quietness (except the rustle of the water) I recommand to be here early, because the valley is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the whole area.

Wikipedia: Ko Phi Phi Don is the largest of the islands in the Ko Phi Phi archipelago, in Thailand. Phi Phi Don is 9.73 km2 (3.76 mi2): 8 kilometers (5.0 miles) in length and 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) wide. Part of the islands are administratively part of Ao Nang in Krabi Province. It is the only island in the group with permanent inhabitants, although most are temporary workers servicing the tourist trade.

Like the other islands in the archipelago, Phi Phi Don is a non-volcanic island largely made of limestone. It is almost separated into two islands, but a strand of flat land connects them. On this strand lies the largest settlement on the island, as well as most of the resorts.

More than 1,000 people died 26 December 2004 when a tsunami struck the island.

Lohdalum Bay was hit the hardest, with the majority of the bungalows and restaurants along the beach destroyed. There is a memorial for those killed in the tsunami on the beach facing Lohdalum Bay. Every year there is a small memorial service where family members and friends come to pay their respects and talk about those they lost. A moment of silence is observed at the time the tsunami hit.

There were three waves: the first one flooded Lohdalum Bay, the second destroyed all of the wooden buildings and the third and largest ruined stone buildings as if they were made of sand. The whole tsunami lasted for only three minutes (from 10:29–10:32) but it nearly destroyed the whole island.

One of the largest muroids, it is a brown or grey rodent with a body up to 25 cm (10 in) long, and a similar tail length; the male weighs on average 350 g (12 oz) and the female 250 g (9 oz). Thought to have originated in northern China, this rodent has now spread to all continents except Antarctica, and is the dominant rat in Europe and much of North America—making it by at least this particular definition the most successful mammal on the planet after humans.[2] With rare exceptions, the brown rat lives wherever humans live, particularly in urban areas.

The Cape Buffalo is the largest sub-species of the African Buffalo. The adult African buffalo's horns are its characteristic feature: they have fused bases, forming a continuous bone shield across the top of the head referred to as a "boss". It is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous animals on the African continent, and according to some estimates it gores, tramples, and kills over 200 people every year.

The African Buffalo is not an ancestor of domestic cattle and is only distantly related to other larger bovines. Its unpredictable temperament may have been part of the reason that the African buffalo has never been domesticated, unlike its Asian counterpart, the water buffalo. Natural predators of adult African buffaloes include lions, hyenas, large crocodiles and humans. (Wikipedia)

The Yellow-billed Oxpecker sitting on the buffalo's head is a bulbul-sized olive-brown bird that sports a diagnostic red-tipped yellow bill, a red eye without an eye-wattle, and a pale buff rump. Small groups occur in savanna and farmland, where they require large wild ungulates and domestic stock to forage on; they clamber agilely over host mammals, gleaning ticks, mites and other ectoparasites, and occasionally drinking host blood. As they fly between large mammals, they give a distinctive sizzling-crackle call. (eBird)

Maligne Lake is the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies, Ringed by snow-and-ice-capped mountains, the 22 km long lake stretches past serene Spirit Island right to the melt-water channels of Coronet Glacier. Maligne Lake has some great trails, walked about 2 hours along the lakeside and forest. This place is an absolute must if you're in the area! Beautiful scenery with mountains peaks and wildlife close by. The lake and walking path is jammed with stunning views! It was a cloudy day when visiting there, the lake would be more colorful if the sky was opened. Even though it can not stop its beauty.

I shot this at Lake Windermere, Cumbria England. It is the largest natural lake in England. It is a ribbon lake formed in a glacial trough after the retreat of ice at the start of the current interglacial period.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometres over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres. The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space and is the world's biggest single structure made by living organisms. This reef structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps. It supports a wide diversity of life and was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981. The Great Barrier Reef has long been known to and used by the Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and is an important part of local groups' cultures and spirituality. The reef is a very popular destination for tourists, especially in the Whitsunday Islands and Cairns regions. Tourism is an important economic activity for the region, generating over A$3 billion per year. 22837

The long-billed curlew is the largest sandpiper of regular occurrence in North America. It is 50–65 cm (20–26 in) long, 62–90 cm (24–35 in) across the wing and weighs 490–950 g (1.08–2.09 lb).

Its disproportionally long bill curves downward and measures 11.3–21.9 cm (4.4–8.6 in), and rivals the bill of the larger-bodied Far Eastern curlew as the longest bill of any shorebird.[4] Individuals have a long neck and a small head. The neck and underparts are a light cinnamon in color, while the crown is streaked with brown. This species exhibits reversed sexual dimorphism, as in many sandpipers, the female being larger and having a much longer bill than the male's.

visitors can now admire one of the largest and most beautiful moated castles in Münsterland. To this day the image of the former fortress is dominated by its massive tower, which was built in the 12th century.

One of the largest and oldest museums in North Rhine-Westphalia is housed within the ancient walls of Anholt Castle itself, which was rebuilt in the 14th century as a prestigious residential palace. Its collection includes Dutch masters like Rembrandt as well as an extensive collection of Chinese, Japanese and even Dutch porcelain, and Renaissance and Baroque furniture.

But it’s not only the castle that is worth a visit; its gorgeous garden is too. The Baroque English landscape garden extends over the entire landscape around its ponds. A spacious box tree parterre garden opens onto the residence of the Princes of Salm-Salm, the owners of this estate for several centuries. Passing by roses and equestrian statues, symmetrical gravel pathways lead to the historic tea house. Colourful rhododendron bushes, lush water lilies and bright red poppies provide additional pops of colour along the way. All the main paths are accessible for wheelchair users.

From the former "Maximilian" colliery, the Maximilianpark was created in 1984 as part of the first state horticultural show. Since then, around 450,000 visitors have been exploring the spacious park every year, which is a real play paradise for children. The walks in the park lead past colorful gardens, a naturally created pond and swamp area and the largest tropical butterfly garden in North Rhine-Westphalia. Over 200 colorful butterflies can be seen here. Every year numerous events such as concerts, cabaret evenings, children's theater, trade fairs, markets and festivals take place on the site.

The Hoh River valley was formed thousands of years ago by glaciers.

Iris is the largest genus of the family Iridaceae with up to 300 species – many of them natural hybrids. Iris is a genus of 260–300 species of flowering plants with showy flowers. It takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, which is also the name for the Greek goddess of the rainbow, Iris. Some authors state that the name refers to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species. As well as being the scientific name, iris is also widely used as a common name for all Iris species, as well as some belonging to other closely related genera.Irises are perennial plants, growing from creeping rhizomes (rhizomatous irises) or, in drier climates, from bulbs (bulbous irises). They have long, erect flowering stems which may be simple or branched, solid or hollow, and flattened or have a circular cross-section. The inflorescences are in the shape of a fan and contain one or more symmetrical six-lobed flowers. 26141

Akdamar Island is the largest island on Lake Van. The first Armenian settlement founded in the 4th century AD. It was the former capital of the Armenian kingdom. It is always a pleasure to see these elusive and beautiful Quail. I ended up seeing 7 of them so it was my lucky day. These birds are not easy to find in WA and are severely declining there. They are declining mostly due to habitat loss due to development, intense agriculture and overgrazing, flooding of riparian areas (through dams) and climate change creating the loss of much needed water sources. Mountain Quails are the largest of any quail in North America and these birds are sadly completely extirpated from BC. This bird is a male in moult hence his lack of head plumes.

Grevy's is the largest of Africa's zebra species, and the most mule-like in appearance. Here a herd of Grevy's feeds in the evening before sunset. Because it lives mostly in desert areas, Grevy's zebra is endangered from lack of food after a long drought. Zebras in Samburu National Reserve have access to water from the Ewaso Ng'iro River, but food is scarce and daily haying efforts are helping to keep animals -- not just zebras but also oryxes -- fed. ©2022 John M. Found this pair of Wood Bison along the AlCan Highway years ago in northern BC.

I'm a big bison fan. They are my favorite critter in Yellowstone. I've been around them often, sometimes fairly close on the roads. But this bull and cow....look at his shoulders, chest and hump. Noticeably larger.

"Unregulated hunting in the 1800s nearly wiped them out, and by the middle of the 20th century some thought the animals were extinct. But then, in 1957, a small herd was found in a remote part of Alberta by the crew of a plane flying overhead. Since then, their numbers have rebounded to around 11,000 in Canada, as governmental organizations have helped breed and repatriate them to a few parts of their former range.

PS: some of you have noticed my lens was at 180. Yes, pretty near them. Was a lucky shot driving the AlCan, a herd was gathered along the highway. I just pulled over, dropped the window, said hi and click. Little risk.

However, they sadly hang near this high speed highway and some are killed each year from driver's not paying attention.

The wood bison differs from the plains bison, the other surviving North American subspecies/ecotype, in a number of important ways. Most notably, the wood bison is heavier, with large males weighing over 900 kilograms (2,000 lb), making it the largest terrestrial animal in North America. The highest point of the wood bison is well ahead of its front legs, while the plains bison's highest point is directly above the front legs. Wood bison also have larger horn cores, a darker and woollier pelage, and less hair on their forelegs and beard." Wikipedia

May they thrive and prosper.

Have a great weekend!

Ships to Shore 2017 - Steveston

One of the world’s largest tall ships, the Kaiwo Maru made a special guest appearance to Garry Point Park in Steveston, BC in honour of Canada's 150th anniversary.

Built in 1989, this majestic tall ship sailing from Japan is 361 feet in length and has over 29,000 square feet in sails.

Also known as the 'King of the Sea'.

Kaiwo Maru is a Japanese four-masted training barque tall ship.

She was built in 1989 to replace a 1930 ship of the same name.

The Ships to Shore celebration attracted thousands upon thousands of people, anxious to catch what possibly could be a once in a lifetime glimpse of this magnificent sailing ship.

In the background there were nautical displays, carnival activities, food concessions, fireworks and much more...

As night fell, a live band drew and captivated a large audience of people.....truthfully, none of that seemed to distract myself nor many other dedicated photographers..

I know I couldn't 'steer clear' (so to speak) from this extraordinary ship's side, nor could I afford wasting one precious moment of what night fall was offering.

The dimming sky provided ongoing colour and light photog opportunities that enhanced the magic of this fine lady and her scenic surroundings.

A sight to 'sea'

''The station is an open-vault metro station, the largest without any support pillars on the network. To facilitate construction, impressive efforts had to be done: the soil was frozen for 90 days, and the technology used to make it was also one of the few technologies imported from other countries to construct the metro.

The works lasted 4 years, in December 1981 the station was inaugurated.

It should also be added that, since its commissioning, the station has never been renovated or consolidated.''

Australia’s largest gull, the Pacific Gull (Larus pacificus) occurs only along the coasts of southern Australia. Despite its name, they are seldom seen on the Pacific coastline, and are more common on beaches bordering the Southern and Indian Oceans.

The African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), also known as the African savanna elephant, is the largest living terrestrial animal with bulls reaching a shoulder height of up to 4 m (13 ft). Both sexes have tusks, which erupt when they are 1–3 years old and grow throughout life.

It is distributed across 37 African countries and inhabits forests, grasslands and woodlands, wetlands and agricultural land. It is a social mammal, traveling in herds composed of cows and their offspring. Adult bulls usually live alone or in small bachelor groups. It is a herbivore, feeding on grasses, creepers, herbs, leaves and bark.

Since 2004, it has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. It is threatened foremost by habitat destruction, and in parts of its range also by poaching for meat and ivory.

They can weigh 7 t (7.7 short tons). The heaviest male on record weighed 10.4 t (11.5 short tons) and was shot in 1974 in Angola. Females are much smaller at about 2.2–2.6 m (7.2–8.5 ft) tall at the shoulder and up to 4 t (4.4 short tons) in weight. – Wikipedia

The largest living rail in the world, endemic to New Zealand. Considered extinct until it was famously rediscovered in the Murchison Mountains in 1948. The wild population remains in the Murchison Mountains; the species has been translocated to predator-free offshore islands and mainland sanctuaries, and recently reintroduced to northwest Kahurangi National Park. Note distinct iridescent plumage, white undertail, and huge bright red conical bill that extends onto the forehead. Often heard giving a quiet hooting contact call, or a muted boom. Australasian Swamphen (Pukeko) can look similar, but Takahe are much larger, can’t fly, and have no black on wings or back. (eBird)

63 cm; stands c. 50 cm tall; male 2250–3250 (2673) g, female 1850–2600 (2268) g. (Birds of the World)

What a thrill to see this beautiful endangered rail so early in our visit to New Zealand. Safely translocated to a predator-free island, the family is safe to roam with other native birds. Interesting to watch him using his feet to pull up and eat grass. Being in a safe environment, we could get very close to these wonderful birds.

Roadrunner Birding Tours.

Ellenabeich is the largest village on the island of Seil. And Seil, connected to the mainland by "The Bridge Over the Atlantic" is the most easily accessible of the Slate Islands, a dozen miles or so south of Oban.

Ellenabeich is mostly made up of long lines of white-harled workers cottages that on a sunny day make it gloriously attractive. However, the real story of Ellenabeich revolves around part of the village that is at first far from obvious. On the shoreward side of the village, immediately behind one of the rows of cottages, is what at first looks like an atoll, a large very roughly circular line of rock apparently enclosing an arm of the sea.

This can look like a harbour from a distance. Actually, it is all that remains of the slate quarry that led to Ellenabeich's growth. This was started by the Campbells of Breadalbane in 1745, and by 1842 new steam powered pumps meant that quarrying could take place to a depth of 250ft below sea level, in a vast pit separated from the sea by just a narrow wall of rock.

At the height of the industry in the 1870s the combined output of the quarry at Ellenabeich and those on Easdale Island filled ten steamers each week that called at the specially built pier in the channel between Seil and Easdale (of which, today, only a collection of posts remain). It was justly claimed that, together with the nearby islands of Luing and Belnahua, these were "the islands that roofed the world".

A storm in 1881 breached the wall around Ellenabeich's quarry and it was inundated by the sea. Fortunately no one was in it at the time. As the slate here was nearing exhaustion in any case, this spelled the end of slate quarrying in Elleneabeich and the several hundred jobs it provided. The same storm badly damaged some of Easdale Island's quarries, but these were pumped out and reopened, to survive in production for another thirty years.

Today's Ellenabeich has a timeless quality. The quarry is much as it was left in 1881, while the village itself seems little changed in over a century. Today, though, it is more a place for people to escape the bustle of Oban or places further afield, and where you come to catch the small ferry to Easdale Island.

Different species are found in various geographic regions of the United States: eastern lubbers (Romalea guttata, found from central North Carolina west through southern Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas to Texas and throughout Florida), horse lubbers (Taeniopoda eques, native to Texas and Arizona, down into Mexico), plains lubbers (Brachystola magna, most commonly found on the prairies of the western part of the United States and Mexico) and southeastern lubbers (Romalea microptera, which spread out from North Carolina to Florida, west to Louisiana and northeast to Tennessee).

At 143,000 GT, Britannia is the largest of seven ships currently in service with P&O Cruises and she is also the flagship of the fleet, taking the honour from Oriana. She officially entered service on 14 March 2015 and was named by Queen Elizabeth II. Her first captain was Paul Brown also Captain onboard now.

Britannia features a 94 metres (308 ft) Union Flag on her bow, the largest of its kind in the world.

Britannia was ordered in 2011 and was laid down on 15 May 2013.[5] The ship was built at the Fincantieri yard at Monfalcone in Italy.

The name Britannia was announced on 24 September 2013 and has historical importance for P&O, as there have been two previous ships named Britannia connected with the company. The first entered service in 1835 for the General Steam Navigation Company, which went on to become the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company. The second, which entered service in 1887, was one of four ships ordered by the company to mark the golden jubilee of both Queen Victoria and P&O itself.

The ceremonial float out of the third Britannia took place on the afternoon of 14 February 2014, with the traditional champagne bottle smashed against the vessel's hull.

Britannia departed the Fincantieri ship yard on 27 February 2015 for Southampton via Gibraltar. Britannia was officially named on 10 March 2015 by Queen Elizabeth II at the Ocean Terminal.

Ljubljana is the capital and largest city of Slovenia, located along a trade route between the northern Adriatic Sea and the Danube region, north of the country's largest marsh, inhabited since prehistoric times. It is the country's cultural, educational, economic, political and administrative center.

The exact origin of the name Ljubljana is unclear. In medieval times, both the river and the town were also called Laibach in German. This name was used within the region until 1918 and continues to be used in German. In Italian, the city is referred to as Lubiana, and in Latin, it is known as Labacum.

The German name was first documented in 1144, and the Slovenian form appeared in records as early as 1146. The 10th-century work "Life of Gregentios" provides the Greek variant Λυπλιανές (Lyplianes) and situates it among the Avars in the 6th century. This account is influenced by an earlier northern Italian source written shortly after the conquest of 774.

The connection between the Slovene and German names has posed a puzzle for scholars. In 2007, linguist Tijmen Pronk, an authority in comparative Indo-European linguistics and Slovene dialectology from the University of Leiden, provided strong support for the theory that the Slavic ljub- meaning "to love, like" was the most likely origin. He argued that the river's name likely stemmed from the settlement's name. Silvo Torkar, a linguist with expertise in Slovene names, put forth the idea that Ljubljana's name has its roots in "Ljubija", the original name of the Ljubljanica River. This can be traced back to the Old Slavic male name "Ljubovid", which translates to "the one with a lovely appearance". Torkar also asserted that the name "Laibach" is a combination of German and Slovene, sharing its origins with the same personal name.

Prešeren Square (Slovene: Prešernov trg) is the central square in Ljubljana. It is part of the old town's pedestrian zone and a major meeting point where festivals (like the annual Ljubljana Dragon Carnival), concerts, sports, political events, and protests take place. It was redesigned according to plans by Edvard Ravnikar from a funnel-shaped to a circular form in 1987–88 and renovated in 2007.

The Triple Bridge (Slovene: Tromostovje, in older sources also Tromostje) comprises three bridges spanning the Ljubljanica River. It connects the historical medieval town on the southeastern bank with the central Prešeren Square on the northwestern bank. Dating back to the 13th century, it stands as the oldest bridge in Ljubljana. In the early 1930s, the architect Jože Plečnik redesigned and expanded it. In August 2021, the Triple Bridge was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of Plečnik's enduring legacy.

These small inshore fishing boats in Mevagissey's inner harbour are normally used to fish for crab and lobster. This part of the harbour dates from the late 1700s and is on the site of a medieval quay. Mevagissey lies on the south coast of Cornwall and is said to have the second largest fishing fleet in Cornwall. The inner harbour is normally fairly full, so on this occasion most of the boats would appear to have gone to sea, although a few are moored in the outer harbour.

Currently the largest mosque in Turkey, the Grand Çamlıca Mosque (Turkish pronunciation: [tʃamlɯdʒa]) (Turkish: Büyük Çamlıca Camii) is a complex for Islamic worship which was completed and opened on 7 March 2019. The mosque stands astride Çamlıca Hill in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul and is visible from much of the centre of the city. The complex incorporates an art gallery, library, and conference hall. It can hold up to 63,000 worshippers at a time (can accommodate up to 100,000 people in case of an earthquake).

The cost of the mosque was US$110 million (approx. 550 million Turkish liras at the time). Planning for the Çamlıca Mosque began in the year 2000 and was led by two female architects, Bahar Mızrak and Hayriye Gül Totu. Their design won second prize in a competition to come up with something suitable.

The mosque was officially inaugurated on 3 May 2019 by the current President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Several world leaders were present at the ceremony including Senegalese President Macky Sall, Guinean President Alpha Conde, Albanian president Ilir Meta, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh and other foreign dignitaries.

Çamlıca Mosque was only the third mosque in Turkey to have six minarets, after the Sultanahmet (Blue) Mosque in Istanbul and the Sabancı Merkez Mosque in Adana.

In 2022 work was under way to add a spur to the M5 Metro line from Üsküdar to include a stop at the Çamlıca Mosque.
