I finally, finally, finally got my laptop today!! We're required to buy one to attend the school but since my loan check was such a pain in the ass, I couldn't get mine when classes started...it made my PhotoShop class particularly difficult lol But I've got it now...yay for new toys!!

Last week, I noticed my laptop's CPU fan was running harder than normal. Today I noticed it was running at full speed all of the time.

Suspecting a blocked cooling system, I got out an incense stick (since I had a couple of spares from a lighting experiment) and used the smoke to see the airflow around the machine. In short, there was none. Holding the stick at the air entry point I noticed a huge amount of turbulence, all of the other air vents were stiller than a dead thing.

Time to strip the laptop. 21 screws later, after removing the screen, keyboard, top panel, HDD, DVD drive and the fan itself, the problem was found. To say the air vent was a little blocked would be an understatement.

One vacuum cleaner, one paint brush and five minutes solved the problem. The fan now spins only occasionally and at the slowest speed. It runs for about 5 seconds at a time, bringing the processor temperature down about 10centigrade. Normal temeratures are now 55-65C, rather than the 75-80 I measured before unblocking the fan assembly.
