A few lantern bugs /lanternflies (Pyrops) of Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. These are probably some of my most favorite genera of invertebrates. Enjoy!

One of a kind embellished paper lanterns & Rousseau print. A corner of home.

This is such a simple and colourful idea, though I don't think I've seen a rainbow lantern before.

The first human green lantern, Hal Jordon has a heavy weight on his shoulders. Despite having 'the will to serve', Hal does not yet feel confident enough to operate on Earth. Inside him is a tiny sliver of fear. Fear that he will mess up. Fear he will bring trouble to his home. Fear he will inadvertently hurt those he cares for.

Instead, he chooses to broaden his horizons and only visits Earth occasionally. He is more like a space cop than a superhero.

some said once saying goodbye to the sky, another star would be diminished...

Minolta MD Rokkor 50mm 1.2

Aperture was wide open.

I've posted two almost identical photographs of this lantern, in the same position, with the identical lighting, minutes apart, for the purposes of comparing two "vintage style" lenses. This photograph was taken with the Minolta MD Rokkor 50mm 1.2 which I think dates from about 1980.

I was surprised by several aspects of the results. For example, the Minolta, despite being easier to focus, renders slightly softer focus. If you compare the bird's wing on the sliver control dial on the lantern (if you magnify and look closely) you'll see that the feathers in the Minolta photo sort of melt to mush, whereas the feathers on the Meyer Optik seem more distinct. I would have bet money on the opposite being true before this little experiment.

Overall, I personally like the softer overall feel of the Minolta photo; it's got more light and a more pleasing effect. However, I admire the lantern in the Meyer Optik photo.

Please leave a comment to let me know which you prefer. Thanks!

Portland Japanese Garden, 05 May 2007

Since summer is almost over, I went to the canal to check on the "Chinese lantern." They will soon lose their green suppleness, leaving tiny frameworks, hanging in clusters.

I found the lanterns in various stages of transformation. Here's one that might represent the middle of their change from supple to skeletal.

Mobius Sky Lanterns

~~~~~
How inspiring is it to see the Milky Way, a comet, and the famous Mobius Arch during a beautiful Mojave evening? It's moments like this that can lift your spirits, even when things are stressful or you are in pain. This is Comet C/2023 A3 as seen on 22 October 2024 from Alabama Hills in Owens Valley, CA, near the Sierra Nevadas. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the scene. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting." Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images.
To my dear Flickr friends, Chinese or non-Chinese, wish you a happy Mid-Autumn Festival.
Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar. Traditionally, Chinese family and friends will get together to admire the bright mid-autumn moon, and eat moon cakes.
The design of the lantern is actually an art.
I bought six gorgeous paper lanterns the other day, don't ask me why, I have no idea. They are soft floral colours and don't match anything in my house. Well....at least they fold down flat.
The sun was lighting up the elevators of the museum Reina Sofia and almost dissolved them in light. The tree and lanterns formed a contrasting and almost united silhouette in the foreground.
