Pranee Hill from the Thai Theravada Association busily works at finishing one of Thai style lanterns. Whilst based on traditional Thai methods that utilise all organic material, these lanterns do use some modern elements.
This morning I enjoyed a Border Morris workshop, then wandered around the Showground for a while. After cooking lunch, I went (with Mike) to do our shift on the Lantern-Making Workshop in the Manor Barn. It's an amazing building, and was soon filled (and overflowing into the gardens) with people creating some wonderful things out of thin canes, tissue paper and diluted PVA glue. I was working with a lovely steward, Jo, who is a speech and language therapist in Dorset (from Doncaster originally). We were SO busy the whole time, giving out tissue paper of a whole range of colours, making up tubs of glue, and then clearing up afterwards. I was there from 1.30 - 7.30 pm! It was good fun, and although I didn't get a break, Jo did let me go off to grab some photos of the incredible creations. It was great to be able to see them lit up in the parade later in the evening.

The entire process of Lantern Making is sort of like an assembly line, with each worker is assigned a particular task.
Here, this man is cutting pieces of bamboo that will actually be used as a frame for the lantern itself.
When I got there, I wanted to take a photo of him, but he told me to come back later as he was busy taking his meryenda (local term for snack).
