If you are one of those people for whom a contraction, such as za for pizza or k for OK, looks like a major faux pas, take a deep breath and visualize the sound of ocean waves and birds chirping.
Abbreviations and contractions have been a part of language, any language, since, well, forever. It’s just that some of these shortenings have been with us for so long that we don’t realize that what we are using is a condensed version of something bigger. This week we’ll see five such words.
What contractions and abbreviations do you use that are not a part of the language yet? Some of these may be just in your family, in your field, in a recreational activity, for example. Share them below or email us at words@wordsmith.org (include your location: city, state).
Today's word is bolshie (also spelled bolshy), an abbreviation of Bolshevik (a person with radical views), from Russian Bolshevik, from bolshe (greater), referring to the faction of the Russian Social Democratic party that seized power in the October Revolution of 1917. Ultimately from the Indo-European root bel- (strong), which also gave us debility and Bolshoi Theatre (literally, Great Theater). Earliest documented use: 1918.

The final word in this week's theme "Nouning verbs and verbing nouns" is savvy, via pidgin and/or creole language(s), from Portuguese and/or Spanish sabe (do you know?), from Latin sapere (to be wise). Ultimately from the Indo-European sep- (to taste or perceive), which also gave us sage, savant, savor, sapid, sapient, resipiscent, insipid, and sipid. Earliest documented use, verb: 1686, noun: 1785, adjective: 1826.

Gestern haben wir einige interessante Ausstellungen im Deutschen Historischen Museum gesehen. Eine der bemerkenswertesten war die Sonderausstellung “Europa und das Meer". Danach haben wir uns am Flussufer einen Drink gegönnt! ️🍻

Today's word is obviate, from Latin obviare (to act contrary), from ob- (against) + via (way). Ultimately from the Indo-European root wegh- (to go or to transport in a vehicle), which also gave us pervious, ochlophobia (a fear of crowds), and ochlocracy (mob rule). Earliest documented use: 1567.

Today's word is bruit, from Anglo-Norman bruire (to make a noise), from Latin brugere, a blending of rugire (to roar) + bragire (to bray). Earliest documented use: 1400.

Yesterday we visited an eccentric contemporary art exhibition at the nGbK Museum in Kreuzberg with our summer students! Later, we enjoyed a huge variety of food at the Markthalle Neun. There were food stands from many countries around the world!
Don't forget that the Grillparty is today from 5 pm onwards at Blankenstein Park!

🌞Our Summer Courses have finally begun! We kicked it off last Monday with a 'Welcome Breakfast' at our local coffee shop, where we enjoyed delicious pastries, coffee, fruits, juices and each other's company. It was great to meet our new students and to get to know our old ones better!

🌞Unsere Sommerkurse haben endlich begonnen! Wir haben am Montag mit einem "Willkommensfrühstück" im Café nebenan angefangen, wo wir leckeres Gebäck, Kaffee, Obst, Säfte und die Gesellschaft der Anderen genossen haben. Es war großartig, unsere neuen Studenten zu treffen!

VIRTLANTIS is a free resource and open community of practice for language learners and teachers in the virtual world of Second Life®. We offer free informal language learning activities for a growing number of languages including English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese, etc. All of our activities are offered free of charge by volunteer language teachers and/or native speakers.
Everyone is welcome to offer a language activity at VIRTLANTIS. We provide free resources and ongoing support. We also collaborate with and promote other language communities in Second Life.
In addition to our main island and the various social meeting points at Knowingly, we have additional locations which can be used when needed.
If you are interested in participating in any of our current activities or would like to offer your own language activity, feel free to contact us in-world, on Facebook, on Skype or via e-mail: info@virtlantis.com.
