The Inca were entirely and oral culture who passed on their history by means of spoken words and songs. About 1550 the Spanish conquerors collected information about their history and myths to morally justify the conquest and their forced Christianization. The Spanish interpreted the Inca creation myth and other stories in a manner consistent with European historical precedents, which biased and distorted their accounts. This is a poster at the Museo de Antropologia, Arquiologia e Historia that makes the argument that the Inca were just developing a written language at the time of the Conquest, when their effort was abruptly supplanted by written Spanish, imported from Europe. The symbols may relate to sounds, similar to hieroglyphs used by the Egyptians to record their early history.
