PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - Service members from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center were honored by Coca-Cola and the San Francisco Giants during a pre-game presentation at AT&T Park in San Francisco. A handful of service members were on the field prior to the Giants' July 21 game versus the Arizona Diamondbacks and were presented an autographed jersey by Giants' pitcher and former Cy Young Award winner Barry Zito. Zito founded the charity "Strikeouts for Troops" in 2005 in support of service members with war-related injuries and their families, and is also involved in multiple other military related non-profit organizations. In addition, 20 DLIFLC service members not involved in the pre-game ceremony were given tickets to watch the game, which ended with a Giant's loss by a score of 1-3.

My wife's poem (in polish language):

Wiersz mojej żony:

Anna Nytra

"Choroba cywilizacyjna"

I słyszę pyknięcie nakłuwacza

I czuję ten dziwny zapach,

i małą pigułkę,

by żyć na spokojnie.

I myślę stale, czy byłoby inaczej,

gdybyśmy żyli

poprawnie

bogobojnie

czy ktoś wcześniej wykuł w skale

komu będzie ciężko

komu doskonale?

czy ktoś wcześniej wcisnął kartkę w mur,

kto będzie żył biednie

kto będzie żył, jak król?

czy do kogoś przemówiło filiżanki dno

i zdradziło, kto chory

a kto będzie miał serce, jak dzwon?

Ja nie wiem, lecz widzę,

jak niespokojnie śpisz,

a ciszę zakłóca

nerwowy zębów zgrzyt

I marzę, że kiedyś

ten, co decyduje

pozwoli nam beztrosko śnić

I mgłą nieistnienia zasnuje,

to, co zaczyna w nas gnić.

a sign language conversation in Nottingham

Fie, fie upon her!

There's language in her eye, her cheek, her lip,

Nay, her foot speaks; her wanton spirits look out

At every joint and motive of her body."

Over the last few weeks, Justus' communication skills have been in overdrive. He is understanding so much of what we say, and we have already started to spell things around him to avoid confusion and dashed hopes.

We've also been trying for months to teach him some basic American Sign Language. I honestly thought he didn't care to get it, but he is really beginning to pick up on that as well. He knows "more," "please," and "all done." They've all been tweaked with his own personal flare, but he knows what he's saying. This photograph is his "more": one finger touching the open palm of his other hand.

He also knows to wave goodbye, gives kisses, and he blows kisses when he hears "I love you." He claps for himself when he hears "Good job!" and also seems to have figured out how to communicate he's hungry or thirsty all on his own by pointing his finger toward his open mouth. (We honestly have no idea where that one came from.)

It's such a joy to have a new level of communication with him, and you can tell he loves it too. We read every night before bed, and usually we can only get through half of one of his short stories. Last night we closed the book when we felt he was done, but he looked at us and signed "more." We finished the story and then he went to bed.

Here are a few of the Japanese language books I have in my collection. I do not speak or read Japanese, but I love the books I have.

Maybe some of my Japanese speaking Flickr friends can offer translations to these titles.

The Afrikaans Language Monument is located on a hill overlooking Paarl, Western Cape Province, South Africa. Officially opened on 10 October 1975, it commemorates the semicentenary of Afrikaans being declared an official language of South Africa separate from Dutch. Also, it was erected on the 100th anniversary of the founding of Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners (the Society of Real Afrikaners) in Paarl, the organization that helped strengthen Afrikaners' identity and pride in their language.

To me, being Dutch, is it fascinating to travel to the other end of the world and being able to understand what people are saying. Afrikaans to Dutch people sounds like a funny language small children tend to speak. It sounds "cozy" and welcoming, if you can say that about a language.
