The City of Charles Sturt takes its name from explorer Captain Charles Sturt who built his family home ‘The Grange’ in the area in 1840. Captain Sturt and his family lived in the house until 1853. The property was sold by Lady Sturt in 1877 following the death of Captain Sturt in 1869. The land was subsequently subdivided to become the village of Grange.
The Grand Land and Investment Company, led by Frederick Estcourt Bucknall and Arthur Harvey, was formed in 1878. The company immediately commenced work to develop Grange as a seaside resort by offering land for sale. The Grange jetty was built in 1879 and the Grange Hotel opened in 1881.
Grange expanded in 1882 with the completion of ‘The Marines’ terrace houses and the sale of 200 blocks offered at auction. By 1883 Grange had 30 houses and at least one shop. The village was also linked to Henley Beach with the extension of the Horse Tram from Henley Beach to Grange.
The Marines were the only three storey Victorian terraces to be built on Australia's coastline. Originally 24 houses were envisaged for the site but only 8 were built at an estimated cost of £1,050 each.

The Marine Residences Company has erected at the Grange a row of lofty and imposing houses facing the esplanade. Messrs Bayer & Withall are the architects for these residences, of which eight have been built. The style of architecture adopted is classic, the rooms are lofty, and each of the three floors has its verandah and balcony. The slopes and front lawns belonging to the houses are grassed, and the work of forming the esplanade has been undertaken by the Woodville District Council. The Marines - Designed as a row of 24 luxury three-storey terraced houses, each of 11 rooms and a frontage of 25 feet, only eight were completed at an estimated cost of £1,050 each in 1883. Arthur Harvey, secretary of Marine Residences Company, was the first buyer, purchasing No 1 Marine Terrace, nearest the Grange Surf Life Saving Club.
Financial decline caused the area to fail and the developers were bankrupted just four years after The Marines were completed.
