Lali Ghat

'Rendered 'pucca' by the Raja of Benaras, several temples are situated here.'

 

In century 1778, this ghat was built pucca by Raja of Banaras. At the upper side, there are temples of Lambodara Chintamani and Jyestha Vinaykas, Kiratesvara, Jayanta Siva Lingam and Maha Laksmi. The vicinity is dominated by washermen.

Varanasi's main claim to fame are the numerous ghats which line the west bank of the Ganges here. These are the steps leading down to the river, from which pilgrims and locals make their sin-cleansing dip in the (somewhat less than clean...) holy waters. Some ghats are used mainly for washing clothes and other items, however, such as at Lali Ghat. The practice is officially discouraged due to the increased pollution that it creates, but it's doubtful if anyone really cares...
