Skies, earth and water. Blue, green and white. Hot - 28 degrees feels like 35. (or 95 for my American friends). Lake Wilcox is a kettle lake carved out by an ice block. Presently one of the most popular inland lakes for family fun, boating and fishing in summer, skating and snow shoeing in winter. No. 7 in the Colour Palette series.

I had a photo-shoot to do today and we did it at the home of one of the musicians in the group I was shooting. After the shoot I did a walk-about and got some photos of Cayuga Lake!

A lovely house on the far side of Lake Orange.

Pretty nice if you can afford it.

There are a lot of birds making a lot of noise as the water rushes in from the Western Irrigation District Canal to fill up Chestermere Lake by May 1.

Mary Cassat the American Impressionist said this in a letter to John Howard Whittemore after a visit to this home and property approximately in 1893:

“I constantly think of Naugatuck and of your beautiful home, and wonder what you would think of my summer home. I am going to send you a photograph of it; my little pond seems very small and insignificant after the rushing rivers of Naugatuck, and no place I am at home seemed to me so desirable as a summer home as Milbury (Middlebury). That beautiful lake and the woods are often in my mind, and all your circle enjoying the delights of it together.”

"The John Howard (J. H.) Whittemore estate in Middlebury, Connecticut, was primarily the work of landscape architect and planner Warren H. Manning. The project was begun by Charles Eliot (1859–1897), an important mentor for Manning at the firm of Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot. Manning (1860–1938) was a young associate in 1893, when Eliot began designing the estate, called Tranquillity Farm, on 300 acres of sloping farmland overlooking Lake Quassapaug. The layout integrated McKim, Mead & White buildings and a landscape of intimate garden spaces, distant prospects, a working forest, farm pastures, and recreational amenities. Graceful roads and prominent stone walls traced the contours of the land. Possibly at Manning’s suggestion, Ellen Shipman designed a terraced garden overlooking the water."

A long pier into Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin.

The water was so still on this morning. It was surreal.

A shot of a sunset off of Big Bear Lake. The light was awesome and the reflections off the lake were incredible. it called for mid to high winds so i thought during the day I wouldn't get to see the reflections during sunset. I was wrong, it died down shortly before 5pm and the water became still. I went extra wide to capture Bear Mountain on the right side of the shot, its one of the snow ski lifts up here. And then, All I had to do was wait for the light.

Cayuga Lake has a lot of open lakefront property, but it is very rugged, that might be why!

Lakefront property views of autumn foliage in southern Vermont.

I just took this one today with my Dad up in Cowichan Lake on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. To me this looks more like the Caribbean Sea rather than a northern lake in a rainforest on a grey day.

These folks have their own lot jutting out from the north shore of Big Bear Lake, CA. Can you imagine sitting out on this landscaped lawn and watching the clouds go by?

In the distance on the left side, you can see the Solar Observatory.

Perched on an impossibly small island, this quaint cottage, created by Duncan Rawlinson, is surrounded by calm, crystal-clear waters. Its striking red roof and stone foundation seem to defy the compact size of the rocky outcrop it calls home. A lone tree and charming outdoor seating add to the storybook-like appeal of this peaceful and secluded retreat, perfect for those captivated by the beauty of remote island living.

I mentioned earlier that I usually did most of my running around as a youth with four friends. Russ, Mike, Dennis, and Roger.

I wrote that most of the time you could find some combination of the five of us in a car, or at the bowling alley. You might also find us on the roof of a school on any given night, or had you looked up above the library, you could have seen us a number of times atop the water tower on a sunny Sunday afternoon as well.

One fine summer day, though, Russ, Mike, Roger, and I were goofing off out at Cavanaugh Lake Park, after which we drove back into Chelsea via Cavanaugh Lake Rd. &West Middle Street.

The four of us arrived uptown and were sitting at the light in front of Lancaster’s Drug Store when a car full of angry young men pulled up beside us.

Roger was driving his elder brother’s burgundy 1965 Chevy Impala. The guys in the other car reached in through the window and started dragging Roger out through the driver’s window. We all grabbed his legs and, poor old Roger being the prize, played tug-o-war with them.

I stuck my foot across the console to the clutch and managed to get the car in 1st gear so we could use the car’s 327 engine to help. The three of us finally succeeded in getting Roger back in the vehicle after which we tore off in a frenzy. I didn’t find out until forty years later why those fellows had attacked us;

Russ finally admitted to me a few years ago that he had been giving them the finger through the back window all the way home.

The essence of summer.

This sprawling ranch house on a hill is beautifully positioned for spectacular views of the lake.

No, that is not my house, in case you are wondering! Just my camera.
