Sangeet or Ladies Sangeet is a pre wedding celebration of Hindu and Sikh weddings especially in North India.Women are usually involved in this event where they sing folk songs sometimes teasing the family of the Groom or the bride depending on where the event takes place.
Payal is a friend from university when I was in WA. For many years, she was the Murdoch University representative for Desi - Western Australia's South Asian student society. Her hard work was much appreciated, as well as her helpful and intelligent ideas.
Payal is now a law graduate, working in the field and is looking forward to broadening her career experiences in the next few years. She's bright and bubbly and I think these aspects come across in her expression.

Jaggo: The Jaggo ceremony is where the family dances and sings on the road in front and around the beautifully decorated wedding home. Jaggo is in the last hours of the night. They decorate copper vessels called "gaffers" with divas (clay lamps) and fill them with mustard oil and light them. The bride/bridegrooms maternal aunt (mammi) carries it on her head, and another lady will have a long stick with bells, and she will be shaking it. The ladies will then go into other friends and families homes and be welcomed by sweets and drinks, they will then dance there and move on. It is a loud ceremony, filled with joy, dancing, fireworks, and food. And if the family wishes the ladies' sangeet (ladies night of singing) and mendhi will follow the mayian and dinner.

Rajan's Ladies Sangeet.
One of the key festivities prior to a Punjabi wedding is the ladies sangeet - where close friends and family gather to watch the females (traditionally) of the clan sing folk and traditional Punjabi songs as a rite of the wedding process. That's right, process - it goes for 5 days!
In this modern adaption of the ladies sangeet, men and women close to the family are seen here acting and dancing out bits from different songs in a group style.

The term sangeet has several definitions - all of which are derived from its Sanskrit origins. Sangeet, literally, may be translated into English as sung together, or singing with instrumental accompaniment.
A sangeet is a Indian/Pakistani ceremony prior to the wedding. This event takes place 2 or 3 days before a wedding in a Banquet Hall or if a small affair, then at home. Ladies are the only people to take part in the event. Some men are there if they are close to the bride or groom. During this event ladies will sing traditional Indian songs, and joke around with guests. This event is also like a dinner and dance, because there is a lot of dancing and lots of food! The Sangeet is a good natured ribbing of the couples in-laws. Some Indian instruments like the dholki accompany the joking. The dholki is like a two-sided drum. The Sangeet is also a good time for the wedding guests to get acquainted with each other.
Sometimes the bride and groom will choose to hold a separate Sangeet to Ladies Sangeet. At the Sangeet both men and women can participate. It is a joyous occasion where the family and friends of the couple perform dances to celebrate the upcoming wedding.

Apparently it's an Indian custom that there is only one ring. This is given at engagement and in whole symbolises the bond and love between husband and wife.
