Heading into the Labourday Weekend... Oh Canada!

a Pitt Meadows sunrise.

It's not tulips for Amsterdam, it's tulips for Edendale in Southland, New Zealand. On just one day a year- Labour Day- Triflor NZ Ltd a tulip bulb exporter, opens one of their large paddocks for the public to visit and view an amazing display of flowers. The flowers aren't for picking though, they will cut and mulched and the bulbs will then be harvested. De-heading the flowers is to stop them setting seed and taking away all the goodness from the bulb. And before you cry foul, imagine trying to sell 70 million tulip blooms (let alone employing the labour to pick them). As one grower said 'When did your partner last buy you a dozen tulips?'

It's the first May, Labour Day. In Germany it's an official holiday. When I went to the May 1st rally this morning, I discovered these little guys in the city. Someone made an installation in front of this monument.

"But sir, it's Labour Day..."

"Exactly! So go back to work now or I'll have you sent to the detention barracks."

It seems Darth Maul missed out the word "Holiday" on his calendar.

International Workers' Day (also known as May Day) is a celebration of the international labour movement. May 1 is a national holiday in more than 80 countries and celebrated unofficially in many other countries.

International Workers' Day is the commemoration of the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago. The police were trying to disperse a public assembly during a general strike for the eight-hour workday, when an unidentified person threw a bomb at them. The police reacted by firing on the workers, killing four demonstrators. "Reliable witnesses testified that all the pistol flashes came from the center of the street, where the police were standing, and none from the crowd. Moreover, initial newspaper reports made no mention of firing by civilians. A telegraph pole at the scene was filled with bullet holes, all coming from the direction of the police.~~Wikipedia

The badges the men are wearing were made of red cloth. Men wearing these badges were called 'red raggers'.

The banner was taken on marches to campaign for and celebrate the eight hour day. The three lights stood for 8 hours work, 8 hours recreation and 8 hours rest. The pictures, from left to right, depict a woman, a train driver and a fireman. (Information taken from: The Locomotive journal of Australasia, January 1912)

Had the chance to cover short amount of time in May Day (Labour day) 2015. I came a little bit early today compared to last year only greeted by blocked Hotal Indonesia's fountain with several police guarding around it. This time around, our police force organized the situation better than last year's May Day protest.
