I've been wanting to document the things people in upscale neighbourhoods throw out for a long time. I often wonder what makes these people keep these things for so long in the first place. This is like a note to myself: a record of the world that I live in where it is all about consumerism, buying things we don't need, where more is never enough, because we keep wanting more and more.
Are you a geek?
If not sure, why don't you take the test?
_______
Do you work in IT and when you go home, you go straight to your computer?
Do you wear black-rimmed glasses and T-shirts with geek in-jokes?
Do you fix your own computer?
Did you build a computer, at least once?
Are your friends, family and friends inviting you over, and when you get there, they ask you to fix their computers?
Is the computer your best friend?
Do you cosplay?
Are you into Anime?
Are you a fan of Star Wars?
Do you get the movie "The matrix?" and you love it?
Are you an adult and own a light saber?
Do you keep old computer parts and media like floppy and zip disks?
Do you still own a copy of windows 3.1?
Have you ever attended comic conventions?
How about The Renascence fair?
Is "high water pants" and white socks part of your style?
Do you have PC and Apple products?
Do you own more then 2 game consoles?
Are at least 2 of your game consoles the same brand, different version? (For exeample: Xbox, xbox 360)
Do you watch all movies based on games and comic books?
If you are still reading this and not bored, you might be a geek.
If you answered YES to all of the above, you are a true geek....
The stereotypes are totally true!
*I am proud to be a geek, cause geeks are unique and cool!!! :)

Stories of Excess Part 4 (cont'd - documents of our excessive consumerism):
Every quarter I think it is, our local councils will have a day when 'hard' refuse is collected. Never in all these years have I seen thrones ... or toilet bowls, if you like. His and hers even! I always imagined toilet bowls, being made of what they are, as lasting a lifetime. But evidently when you've got a spare penny and you're going for a bathroom renovation, why not rip out the toilets too? Or perhaps in our quest to consume better and more, these bog-standard ones have been replaced with self-flushing, self-cleaning, self-thinking, computerised toilet bowls which come with wifi and internet connectivity including seats with climate control. The ultimate thrones to deliver your upper-class shit into the sewage system.

***Spreading the LOVE***
Stories of Excess Part 3: (continuation - documents of our excessive consumerism)
There is a child somewhere, who does not live in this privileged neighbourhood who would probably find these toys amusing. Are people who live in upscale neighbourhoods so busy making money that they cannot get into their cars to donate these items to a local children's charity? Often when I drive buy to see the "hard refuse" that people put by their kerbside for the council to collect, the first thing that comes to my mind is this: "What sort of people live in that house?". There are many children in my civilised country who won't have a toy to cuddle. There are many global organisations who take in 'loved' toys for children in orphanages in less-developed countries. One doesn't even need to go that far. Because down the road is a church that would probably have a Sunday play group, and would gladly take the toys.

So, as has been alluded to, 2011 sucks. It can bite me. I'm looking forward to 2013 (I'm skipping 2012 the way buildings skip the 13th floor). As a "coping" mechanism, I have been drowning my sorrows in froufrou drinks at Starbucks. But it's just too much and I really have to lay off it. So, with you as my witnesses, this shall be my last froufrou drink until the next 7 Days run.
*scared!*
I will allow myself plain coffee or tea from Starbucks (or other coffee places), and I may play around with making some homemade pumpkin spice coffees (but I am lazy so I don't expect to do it too often).
So I'm off. To enjoy my salted caramel mocha and play a little Portal before hitting the hay.
Wish me luck.
Apps used here are Snapseed for the b&w and adjustments to exposure (Thanks, Joe, for the heads-up!) and Labelbox for the, well, labels. Which I think I originally learned about here on 7days, but I can't remember from who.
Took the pic on the iPhone, ran it through Camera+, then WordFoto, then Instagram. Then I used Diptic, Labelbox and Squaready to create a walk through of how much you can do on your phone with a single (initially horrible) pic.
(cont'd - documents of our excessive consumerism):
Today my daughter informed me indignantly that Australia is the 15th most pollutant country in the world. That is what happens when you're a country that is doing well. More money = More things to buy = More, more, more. Enough is never enough. Want overrules need. I live in a small city. This photo was taken 5 minutes from the city. Hardly the country, let alone suburbia. It's an upscale neighbourhood. I have no idea why anyone would keep so many tyres, or even keep carpets long enough after a renovation. Don't people go to tyre shops to change their tyres so that they can recycle the tyres? And why so many, I wonder? Don't carpet layers take the old carpet away for recycling? Did they spend too much buying their home that they had to change tyres themselves or lay carpets themselves? This is a nation in love with DIY, you see. It's not just the excess, you understand ... It's human behaviour that I am fascinated with as well. We. Are. Weird. Most of all, why didn't they pack all of the small shit they threw out that is behind the tree, into the suitcase they dumped out? We. Can. Be. Inconsiderate. Very.

1. Flip flops. The first thing I slip on my feet. I don't usually walk barefoot because I don't like the feeling of crumbs or dirt or whatever else might wind up between my feet and the floor. I drive to work in them, and keep them on until the last possible minute until I have to put on my 2. Work shoes. They represent confinement for me, in a way; the office and the hours. Especially on rainy days, or mornings that are particularly beautiful. Or when I don't feel well. Or when I'm bursting at the seams with inspiration. Or Wednesday. As soon as I take them off, I'm free again, and slip into something more comfortable, like 3. Ballet flats. Why not look cute while I walk the pup, straighten the house and try a new recipe? They're not the greatest for support though, so when the day is done, my feet are very happy in a pair of 4. Cozy slippers. Perfect for a stroll to the pantry for a late-night snack, and then to bed for a good night's sleep so I can wake up refreshed and 1. Do it all over again...

Just having fun here. Taking yourself too seriously is boring, and who wants to be boring?! I saw these little angels in a Halloween store and they screamed to have their picture taken. :-)
