Jagermeister. If you grew up in Europe or the US anytime in the last few decades, or spent any time listening to rock or metal in public places… well, you probably know a bit about ‘Jager’. Jaegermeister seems to have steamrollered the world off the back of the (now legendary and still disgusting) Jagerbomb. Alcohol and caffeine - two things I enjoy very much but never uh... at the same time. That said (...and as no doubt the people at Mast-Jägermeister SE will tell you) there’s much more to this liquorice and spice powered delight than the simple Jagerbomb.
Introduced way back in 1935 by Curt Mast (the son of a vinegar maker and a man who enjoyed hunting socially), Jägermeister is a variety of liqueur called ‘Kräuterlikör' (herbal liqueur). The name comes from the German words Jager (hunter) and Meister (master) - combined these words translate to something like ‘master hunter’ - i.e a skilled woodsman and animal slayer. Like many herbal liqueurs the recipe is a closely guarded secret, but we do know that they use 56 herbs and spices, one of them presumably being liquorice. They also recommend you enjoy it ice cold.
Jaegermeister’s label (a glowing Christian cross placed between the antlers of a stag) is a reference to two Patron Saints of hunting - Saint Eustace and Saint Hubertus, both of which supposedly converted to Christianity after experiencing a vision in which they saw a cross in-between the antlers of a stag. I’m not sure what they believed in beforehand but it’s not like the Christians have the monopoly on animistic forest hallucinations, is it?! Fun fact: around the time of Jaegermeister’s introduction, the drink was already well known amongst many Germans, and was supposedly/occasionally referred to as "Göring-Schnaps”...
