This beer-bottle label was collected by David Taylor, Town Clerk of Musselburgh, to mark the closure of the town's brewery in 1968. John Young and Company's Ladywell Brewery was located in North High Street.
This is a traditional beer-bottle label marking YOUNG & COS INDIA PALE ALE EXPORT, the name being printed around a trademark comprising a bold Y above a signature. Details printed around the outside of the label give the brewery's location as 'Fisherrow Edinburgh'.
In the nineteenth century there were several commercial brewing businesses in Musselburgh. Three survived into the 20th century, but all were subsequently closed during rationalisations and take-overs by larger concerns. Some of the beers lived on for a while as the names were used for brews produced elsewhere.
