Artist Stephen B. Whatley recently pictured with American friend Rachel Cahill, on her first visit to London, in Tower Hill Underpass - the main pedestrian entrance, leading from Tower Hill Station to the Tower of London.
Since 2001 the walkway has been vibrantly transformed by this permanent art of reproductions of the series of 30 oil paintings that the expressionist painter was commissioned to create, detailing the history and iconic symbols of the historic Tower of London, one of London's top tourist attractions.
The artist delighted in giving Rachel and her mother Mary a guided tour, telling them the historic details and unique stories behind the creation of the works.
Many of the 30 works - created between January and August 2000 - were painted on location around and even within the walls of the Tower of London - including 'The Chapel Royal of St Peter Ad Vincular & Scaffold Site', shown here on the left. To the right can be seen Whatley's tribute to Elizabeth I.
After completion of the original works of art, Stephen B. Whatley then regularly oversaw the delicate process of reproducing the vibrance of his paintings onto steel vitreous enamel panels, at Escol Panels in Wellingborough - which was reported in 2001 as an Apple Colorsync Success story; achieved by the expertise of Typemaker Ltd.
In March 2001 the installation of the panels was unveiled; and a private viewing of the original paintings was given at the Vaults, in the Tower; in celebration.
In June 2004, Stephen B. Whatley was presented to HM Queen Elizabeth II & HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, in recognition of this major series of work, at a reception in the Banqueting Hall of the Tower of London - where the original paintings were exhibited - to celebrate 4 years of completion of refurbishment of the Tower & its environs.
The work of Stephen B Whatley is in collections worldwide; & in public collections including the London Transport Museum, the BBC & the Royal Collection of HM Queen Elizabeth II. His press includes The London Times, The Guardian, the New York Times, HELLO & TIME and magazines.
This public art exhibit outside Tower Hill Station is open every day - and there is the Tower of London Commission Gallery to be viewed on the artist's website.
ISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNEL
Design Engineer (1806-1859)
One of the great British engineers of the 19th century ISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNEL (1806-1859) built twenty-five railways lines, over a hundred bridges, including five suspension bridges, eight pier and dock systems, three ships and a pre-fabricated army field hospital.
Photograph by Robert Howlett, 1831-1858
Robert Howlett was one of the first photographers to earn a successful living from this new medium. Until the 1850s virtually all photographers were amateurs who arrived at the infant art form either from the sciences or painting. Howlett associated with amateur practitioners through exhibitions of his photographs and in 1856 began to exhibit his work at the Photographic Society in London.
Howlett designed and sold portable darkroom tents and in 1856 wrote a booklet entitled On the Various Methods of Printing Photographic Pictures upon Paper, with Suggestions for Their Preservation. Sometime after 1855, he entered into a professional partnership with Joseph Cundall to establish a commercial photography studio in London. Howlett is best known for a series of photographs commissioned by the LondonTimes newspaper to document the construction of the steamship The Great Eastern, the largest ship built in the nineteenth century. He died at the age of twenty-seven, reportedly due to exposure to the hazardous chemicals used to make photographs.

It's that time again! The December 2009 Diary Project begins today. This year's theme is Shadows or Reflections. One picture a day for the month of December.
It's a fun group with very nice (and very creative) people from all over the globe. Plus, it's a nice way to challenge yourself - but only for one month - that's the part I like. ;-)
You should check it out!

~ dappled with joy and love
A lovely gem of a book, with testimonies and memories from people who knew these luminaries ~ just look at the gulistaan...
Balraj Sahni (*smile*)
Faiz Ahmed Faiz (my favourite)
Guru Dutt (in awe)
Ismat Chughtai (my favourite!)
Kaifi Azmi ~ a soft breeze on a cool day
Kishore Kumar (playful; a bit mad - in all the right sense of it!)
Krishan Chander (awed... )
Raj Kapoor ('He is part of India's national psyche', Bunny Reuben ~ undoubtedly)
Satyajit Ray (genius film maker; Shatranj ke Khiladi one of my all-time fave movies)
Actually, the title is something that was in my head as soon as I awoke this morning, and these lines were echoing throughout my morning routine, how wonderful and evocative they are, and how much I love that Thomas Stearns Eliot had written them! Love all of them, but...
burnt out ends of smoky days...
...
... Wipe your hand across your mouth, and laugh;
The worlds revolve like ancient women
Gathering fuel in vacant lots.
~ Ahhh...
And of course, being spring in London; it is quite like that today, it has been raining since early morning, and quite cold too. Gruff.

Took this photo in the famous Portobello Market in Notting Hill today. Took it as a contribution to this weeks #TwPhCh challenge where the theme was "gammel" (old). Unfortunately I was still in Londontime and missed the deadline by an hour.. but thought I could share it with you anyway ;)
