Catching the late light

"I could never have dreamt that there were such goings-on

in the world between the covers of books,

such sandstorms and ice blasts of words,

such staggering peace, such enormous laughter,

such and so many blinding bright lights,

splashing all over the pages..." - Dylan Thomas

Some amazing bioluminescence shot shot on May 14, 2020.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (sometimes referred to as SIO, Scripps Oceanography, or Scripps) in San Diego, California, founded in 1903, is one of the oldest and largest centers for ocean and Earth science research, public service, undergraduate and graduate training in the world. Hundreds of ocean and Earth scientists conduct research with the aid of oceanographic research vessels and shorebased laboratories.

My brother got his Ph. D. in Geophysics here.

The red tide is named for the rusty red color it makes the water in the daytime. This is one of the best instances of bioluminescence I've experienced in San Diego since 2011. Shot with a Canon EOS R mirrorless camera.

Red tides, which often contain harmful algal blooms (HABs), are caused by chemical reactions that occur between algae and other substances. Red by day, blue by night, this colorful ocean phenomenon is a relatively rare natural occurrence that has spawned a number of imitations in movies and literature, the most recent example being a rather striking scene in the visually-driven movie Life of Pi.

Bioluminescent algae blooms (like the ever-popular dinoflagellate marine algae called Sea Sparkle) are most frequently observed away from shorelines. Though beautiful in the dead of night, during the day these blooming phytoplankton are less than stunning. They often turn ocean water red and murky, and emit a distasteful smell of decay that comes from the algae starving the water of oxygen.

The Author Amos Oz once said that though if literature and gossip would pass one another on the street, they would never greet each other with: 'hello', actually they are cousins: Both satisfy a deep and never satisfied human concern: to what extent I am unique and different? versus: to what extent I am like all the rest, I am 'normal'?

We leave for Texas tomorrow (Tuesday). She's excited, so that makes me excited.

Following the closure of the Fremantle Prison as a prison various parts of it have been repurposed. The northern aspect of the prison, the former women’s section is now used for various purposes including at this time, a literature centre.

The artist's interpretation of his sculpture :-

"Jean Jacques ROUSSEAU was a paranoid character. It therefore seemed natural to me to represent him symbolically by a hermit crab, an animal protected by its shell.

Its five legs, each ending in the shape of an ink pen represent the five main subjects that I have retained from this humanist, namely : -

Botany - Politics - Education - Philosophy - Literature."

Apologies for the absence of uploads. With people returning back to the office, I've been swamped so I've caught up and I'll upload what I have until the next photo shoot at the end of the month. Stay safe out there! 💋
