Male Lion, Panthera leo melanochaita, SH 1.2 m. / 3.94 ft. The largest of the African cats, they have been eradicated from much of their previous range of grassy plains and savannas, scrub bordering rivers and open woodland with bushes. Second largest felid, after the Tiger, P. l. melanochaita, survive today among scattered populations in sub-Saharan Africa.
The male was a late arrival to the feast. Several female lions with bulging bellies are sleeping on the ground around their kill, a Buffalo, Syncerus caffer.

A young lone male lion slumbers peacefully in a tree on the Serengeti. It looks like he had a few battle wounds, but seemed to be doing well. It's likely that he recently was expelled from his own pride, in order to move on to potentially another. While the females remain with the natal pride, the males do not, and this helps prevent inbreeding. On WORLD LION DAY, let's band together to increase protections for these magnificent animals.
This guy was just "Lion Around" at the Fort Worth Zoo and The Mrs captured him in his beauty.
