In contrast to black Diyarbakır, Mardin is sometimes called 'the White City' becasue of the distinctive pale limestone used here. Famous for the beautiful ornate carving on the outside of its buildings, British historian Arnold Toynbee, no mean traveller, called Mardin 'the most beautiful town in the world.' The common motifs used are vines hung with grapes, doves, water drops (symbolising lifewater) and even naked human figures. Wood is almost never used here in house construction, owing to its shortage.
At night the limestone buildings glow in the light of the streetlights. All houses are built against a steep hill in such a a way that each house gets the shadow from its neighbours. A good solution to prevent the daily summer heat entering the houses.

I'll be honest. I almost never do shots like this.
raw.
normal.
I don't know. I guess I always feel too....posey. Self indulgent.
Yet, when I look at photography, I love the raw, b&w shit I see.
I'm drawn to realism; raw, cold, candid, hardcore photography.
Not sure the reasoning in my head at all sometimes.
Bottom line. Just trying this out. I took heaps of them, and I have heaps of outtakes...yikes.
I hate posting them, so I'll wait on that. Just the one in the comments that I'm sure 90% of you will 'prefer'.
I'm wondering if that's really a mental trick, the outtake. ;-)
Random Fact du jour: My new favorite thing is Sobe lifewater.

Rebecca who lives in Alip Village, use to drink some of the nastiest water I've ever seen in my life. She showed me a small brown whole about a foot wide in the ground. I reached down with a plastic bottle to get some of the water out. The smell was wretched. I almost gaged. The bottle I lifted out was full of movement -- big worms, tiny worms, sticks and smelled like a toilet. The odor stayed on my hands the entire day, even after I washed them several times. I am SO THANKFUL that Rebecca has a water well in her village now. You can help so many more get clean water - 100% of your donations goes to the water project. www.charitywater.org

This was at a school DollarHill in Zambia. I was in a process of teaching 26 teachers about hygiene and water quality for their schools. Trained and equipped through the methods of 'Lifewater International', a Christian Organization. Just a small piece in seeing the entire nation of Zambia trained to be able to repair water pumps and to teach the children how be more hygienic to prevent disease.
possibly the first time I've ever gotten the purple even close to properly captured... thanks to shooting RAW, and manual WB!
After Jenny and I finished our 2PM classes we went to eat at the cafe then headed out to the Poughkeepsie Galleria to do some shopping. It was raining and the taxi ride over sucked. We didn't know that it was $2 only if you were going to the clubs and we were charged $14 by some Jamaican guy that we couldn't even understand. So we shopped and I spent like $100 total on everything from the taxi rides to the things I bought. I got yoga pants from Victoria Secret, a long sleeve top from Forever 21, boots from Charlotte Russe, moccasins, mascara, toner, Sobe lifewater, Izze, and thumbtacks/pushpins from Target. My debit card is probably very unhappy. Anyway, we ended up waiting for like an hour for a taxi to come get us from the mall. It was pretty freaky waiting and we called three different taxi services. Finally two black guys in taxi number 69 came :| They charged us $17 to get back and when we neared the school they were all "You guys go to the cute girls school. Those girls at Vassar dress weird and don't show any skin." Interesting day for sure. Anyway, I need to go shower, do English homework, and study for History. I'm mad tired. Oh and sorry for the crappy Photoshopping. I was just too tired to make it nice.
