Amalfi is a town and comune in the province of Salerno, in the region of Campania, Italy, on the Gulf of Salerno. It lies at the mouth of a deep ravine, at the foot of Monte Cerreto (1,315 metres, 4,314 feet), surrounded by dramatic cliffs and coastal scenery. The town of Amalfi was the capital of the maritime republic known as the Duchy of Amalfi, an important trading power in the Mediterranean between 839 and around 1200.
Amalfi is the main town of the coast on which it is located, named Costiera Amalfitana (Amalfi Coast), and is today an important tourist destination together with other towns on the same coast, such as Positano, Ravello and others. Amalfi is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Kinderdijk lies in the Alblasserwaard, at the confluence of the Lek and Noord rivers. In Alblasserwaard, problems with water became more and more apparent in the 13th century. Large canals, called "weteringen", were dug to get rid of the excess water in the polders. However, the drained soil started setting, while the level of the river rose due to the river's sand deposits. Most of the current mills were built in 1738 and 1740 (see below).
After a few centuries, an additional way to keep the polders dry was required. It was decided to build a series of windmills, with a limited capacity to bridge water level differences, but just able to pump water into a reservoir at an intermediate level between the soil in the polder and the river; the reservoir could be let out into the river through locks whenever the river level was low enough; the river level has both seasonal and tidal variations. Although some of the windmills are still used, the main water works are provided by two diesel pumping stations near one of the entrances of the windmills site.

It was besieged and taken by the Spanish in 1582, by the Dutch in 1595, and by the English in 1706 during the War of the Spanish Succession.
Lier is a French commune that was granted city rites in 1212. It is located in the Flanders region of Northern Belgium. Located on the Nete river, Lier was settled in the 8th century and developed around the chapel of St. Peter. Lier became an important textile centre in the 14th century. It was besieged and taken by the Spanish in 1582, by the Dutch in 1595, and by the English in 1706 during the War of the Spanish Succession. Belgian nationalists resisted a Dutch attack in 1830. Belgium has seen its fair share of war and occupation.
Destruction of Lier occurred as a result of bombing in Antwerp in 1914; however, many of the medieval structures survived including, the Gothic belfry, St. Gommarus’ Church and the béguinage.
She lies in wait for the arrival of her goslings, each day constantly priming, preening and tiding up the nest. It won't be long now before three goslings will emerge from under those magnificent downy feathers, and make their way into the world.
Shortly after this photo was taken, that's exactly what happened.
The Dragon lying on his sofa and watching scandalous things going on nearby. Filou was stealing Dragon's cat food ! In fact Filou does that very often, you'd think he doesn't get enough to eat at home, but it's still a shocking sight for Tofu.
The camera is now on its way to Canon service for repairs. Over the weekend I tried to take some more photos of the cats but only Tofu was cooperative. You will therefore mainly see photos of Tofu on my photostream in the near future. Only this morning, literally moments before I put the camera into a box and took it to the post office, I managed a few quick snapshots of Cleo and Filou. The cats will probably not miss the camera but I certainly will.

It will be weeks before sanitation experts will comb through the wreckage and find our hero, maybe sooner if the scavengers can find a way through the barrier.
For now, Flit must remain in this state until someone finds her and hopefully has the tech to do a full reboot. Let's hope nothing overly heavy gets sucked into the magnetic pull over the next link-up scheduled in a few days...

One morning, there were a handful of leopard frogs who were actively hunting for insects. Behind me was a boardwalk and when anyone walked on it, the frogs totally disappeared and it took some time before they'd resurface. I had hoped to catch one in action, but that day, I was lucky just to capture a frog waiting for its breakfast.

Yep, you guessed it. That's the mighty mosquito hiding out under a leaf, just waiting for the next blood meal. If anything I was surprised it didn't pop out and suck my blood. Maybe I should name this female Bloody Mary ;)

Despite lying only a mile or so away from the Kinder plateau (and even closer to the Pennine Way) the summit of Brown Knoll (569m / 1867ft) at the head of Edale, is ignored by most hikers. A walk over the summit is to indulge in a high-level 2 mile trek over fairly featureless moorland terrain linking Kinder Scout and the Lord's Seat / Mam Tor ridge.
Summer walks over the top can be a real pleasure with skylarks heard (although less often scene), along with the occasional grouse call. Winter walks here risk being exposed to biting westerly winds whipping in from the Irish Sea which can make the two mile crossing seem much longer.
This day's route didn't take me over the top but with the backlight and silhouetted effect, I couldn't resist a shot capturing the rather bleak and sinister atmosphere as I walked the last few yards to the summit.
For the rail enthusiast, no trains visible from here I'm afraid, but the 2 mile long Cowburn Tunnel does pass somewhere below and one of the ventilation shafts is clearly visible during the latter stages of the crossing.
