Au carrefour de la D22 et de la N768 à 5 km de Champigné et 29 km d'Angers soit au carrefour de la Salle sur la commune de Cherré (Maine et Loire) quatre soldats américains cachés dans un fossé entre la route et la clôture d'un herbage.
En arrière-plan derrière une haie la fumée d'un incendie.
De nos jours la D768 :
A droite un gunner de LMG Cal.30, le squad de LMG, de la section des LMG, Weapon Platoon de la G Co, 2nd Inf. Regt.
Cette région a été libérée par la 5th US ID. Le PC de la 5th US ID est à Houssay au Nord de Château-Gontier le 7 août et le 10 au Mans
Sous réserve des soldats du Thackeray Task Force (Lt. Col. D. W. Thackeray, ACofS G-2 de la 5th US ID) avec un platoon de la D Co (light tank) qui passe par Coudray direction Le Lion d'Angers. Le 8 aout 1944 ayant quitté Vitré (Ille et Vilaine) le 7 à 13h15.
Composé du 5th Reconnaissance Troop (Mecz) plus une compagnie d'infanterie motorisé la G Co du 2nd Infantry plus un platoon de la D Co 735th Tank Bn (Lt Taylor). Après un combat à Coudray reçoivent l'ordre de se diriger vers Bécon les Granits. Mais à 22h00 ordre de rester avec le TF
Le 8, réussit à atteindre le pont de Châteauneuf sur Sarthe juste pour le voir détruit par les Allemands, puis fonce capturer le pont sur la Sarthe au Lion d'Angers (ou le TF sera bloqué suite à la destruction du pont.)
Dans l'action Taylor perdra un M5 et deux endommagés ainsi que quatre légèrement touchés, le 8 et 9.
C'est ce TF qui bloque le secteur nord d'Angers
Tandis que le 11th Inf. en tête doit arriver sur Angers par l'ouest.
Le secteur ou le TF évolue :
Château Gontier, Azé, Coudray, Daon, Cherré, Châteauneuf sur Sarthe, Champigné, le Lion d'Angers, Les Ponts de Cé, Bécon les Granits, Angers et Saint Barthélémy d'Anjou.
